Chateauneuf-du-Pape doesnt mean anything could be garbage wine from that region

Lol, always makes me smile when i read this as a deal.
Reminds me of a series of Come Dine With Me, when one woman was obssesed with the stuff

This half price offer was too great to resist. I normally pay about £15 for these as birthday gifts to friends. Well, all I can say is it tastes beautiful and I was half cut that very evening.

LOL, I actually went out and bought a bottle after that, just to see what she was on about. Cost me £17.

Was pleasant enough, had a nicer texture than cheaper wines but I'm not a great wine drinker so wouldn't bother again.

Quality, not so subliminal marketing eh? I don't drink alcohol myself so will never have the pleasure but she really did seem to worship the stuff

only £7 at asda and they are both delicious

Hehe! Good ol' Berkshire. URZZZZ!!!

Cheap enough for a pressie for someone though, and the label always looks impressive!

All chateauneuf du pape is identical, all you ever need to do when buying wine is look at the price.

I'm off to down a bottle of 1955 Chateau Margaux with a steaming bowl of red hot chilli and some pickled onions.

(nb not voted - maybe this is ok but nobody can say on the ridiculous lack of info above, sorry OP)

enjoy the margaux. I have an 82 lafite to go with my tomato pasta tonight.

which year is tihs wine from? the Asda one was vry recent and does not taste that great. It seems this wine needs to be 4 - 5 years old to taste nice.

We like the Chateauneuf du Pape wines but are sometimes a bit over-rated and over-priced
during the Summer the Wine Festival in the actual village is great and you can taste the wines
once you have bought a wine glass, about 2 euro.

Even better is the White Chateauneuf but pricey.

The wines we get over here need to be laid down for a couple of years to improve the taste, but at
£7 is well woth a punt.

...or a nice St Emilion from Chateau Cheval Blanc 1947 to go with the sausages.

vurt

Now that's the kind of fantastic thinking that could send me bankrupt

They're also doing Wolfblass Cabernet Sauvignon for £4.49 a bottle.
I was in on Saturday in Reading branch and they had no stock in the wine section but cases of Cab Sauv near the fruit and cases of Cateauneuf by the deli counter!
Chateauneuf is pretty decent, well worth the money. I sort of agree about needing more info to say if a wine is good but in my experience all Chateauneuf is of a decent standard, and is a decent price if it's less than £10.

Sometimes you just want to say, sod all this wine - just give me a pint of mineral water.

Frankly I think a lot of people get hoodwinked by wine deals, with most supermarkets yo-yoing the price of certain brands to create the impression of quality at a cheap price.

This deal probably isn't quite the same as the trick they do on a lot of New World stuff, but you're better off going to a good wine merchant, setting a price, and asking for a recommendation based on what you'll be pairing the wine with. These places want to cultivate a clientele so have little interest in ripping you off. Alternatively go to Waitrose, even their £4 wines are reliable. I know there's not a lot of love here for Waitrose, but while they're not cheap in absolute terms, the quality is high.

Was in Asda today and it was back to full price!

M&S are generally pretty good, same caveat (might be £4 generic 'french red' vs £2 in Lidl, but there'll be less antifreeze in it)

'Posh' wine = 49% snobbery, 49% placebo effect, 2% subjective qualitative difference.

I honestly pity those that make that kind of comment. Perhaps you should sample something other than the 'quality' box of wine at the working mens club. I doubt it'd take more than two sips of a good Bordeaux (or a good number of others - try a decent Barolo or even a 'super tuscan' if you just think I'm banging on about france - though obviously France does have some fantastic wines...)

Wolfblass Cabernet Sauvignon is 3.99 in Netto .
Fine like wine , when you start to rap.
