The area it is produced in is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines on the planet.

That's not to say every vineyard in the area produces top class wine though and you will pay a premium even for the poor wines due to fact of the location of the vineyard.

You pay your money and you take your chance.

Think of "Chateauneuf du Pape" as being like "Champagne". There are good Champagnes and not-so-good Champagnes, but they are generally more expensive than a sparkling wine of similar quality just because they have "Champagne" on the label.

Nice...We always get one (or two) for Xmas dinner, Strong , full bodied and knocks your head off if you overindulge. HEAT

Any idea what vintage this is? Seen some nice reviews of 2007 vintage

My favourite wine! HOT!

Exactly what I thought of too!!!
Still, it is an excellent wine

Lovely! Heat added

Oooooo, my favourite wine. Will have to stock up at that price. HOT

HOT! This is an absolutely delicious wine!

I picked up a bottle of Pouilly Fuissé from local shop for only £8.99. Very nice.

French wine heavily overpriced. This makes this bottle only slightly expensive, rather than exorbitant.

I had a 30 quid bottle for my birthday and have to say it was a completely different experience from drinking any wine I'd ever had before. It was amazing. First of all it was like sucking a wooden lolly stick followed by somebody pushing pieces of warm dark chocolate into your mouth. Absolutely not a joke and I'm not even remotely wine-wankey. I was playing Gears of War on xbox live at the time.

Advice I'd give myself in retrospect is don't drink all the bottle in one go, have other things between so the impact of it builds up again.

It's amusing to see all these comments from people raving about a wine just because the name sounds expensive.

Let's not forget:

Châteauneuf du Pape is an area - not a specific wine
Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine may or may not be a good example of it
Crucially - we don't even know which vintage Morrisons are selling

Don't get me wrong - this could be an excellent wine. But supermarkets have a great track record for fake price cuts, and it could just be that this wine is worth exactly what they're selling it for - £8.99.

What he said. But an £8.99 bottle of red should theoretically be very drinkable...If slightly expensive. Hardy's Crest at £4.99 down form £9.99 is usually a winner for the money.

Ha ha ha, pure BS!

So why not get a bottle and try it and report back. £8.99 for any CN de P is cheap. Whether its any good or not is as you say another matter, but unless you've tried it your comments don't really add a lot do they? I certainly cannot see any CN de P from this maker cheaper online so hot from me

I don't think my comment added any less than yours - but I look forward to reading your review of this wine when you've bought a bottle.

Perhaps when you feed back to us you could also tell us all which vintage it is - it's a bit pointless trying to judge a wine without even knowing that..........

If I get a bottle to try I will report back but the point is, can you point a deal out where any CN de P is cheaper than £8.99 a bottle? I haven't had many horrors when trying different variations of this wine to be honest. Most of the false pricing by supermarkets is on the large brand big sellers like the Blossom Hill, Jacob's creek, Wolfblass type wines that alwasy seem to appear in various different retailers at "half price" each week!

Trying to belittle people by laughing at them (or finding them amusing as you said) because they rush to buy a wine they recognise as generally being of decent quality is not particularly helpful to anyone

Just come back from my local Morrisons.
Vintage is 2008.
The price was marked up as £14.49 and not £14.99 as on their website.
There was no discount on it at the store I was in though.
Anyone actually purchased a bottle? If so, what price did you pay, which location and have you got any further details?

Could you look at the bottle to see which Domaine it is from please. Thanks

Auguste Bessac is the producer and it was 6 quid off in Morrisons located in Shepherds Bush shopping center. Where the very old go to visit their parents......

I'm raving about it because I often drink it, not because of the name of it!

I accidently drank a bottle of Lidl Champagne instead last night so I'll try again tonight. Lidl own brand Champs pretty good by the way. 10 quid.
