With great difficulty :-D

£95 delivered aint bad for the HP considering it comes with XP Pro.

Good price, will or could it play COD4 for me son..?

Freakin' bargain. I know the HDD are only IDE and 20Gb and 40GB respectively but you don't really need SATA for basic computing (despite advantages). HDD is easily upgradeable (or get an external driver) and I'm sure you can't go wrong, at least not with the Dell as they use quality components.

Fleabay have second hand P4's cheap, and I've bought one off there before for my dad, upgraded it etc. but these come with the Win XP licenses - fab! I've passed these links onto my friend who is looking for a cheap base unit for under £100.

If you upgraded the RAM and added a video adaptor then probably yes.

For the HP D530, it can only house 1 HDD and has both an IDE and SATA interface but not sure what capacity the BIOS can detect, got HP website for that info.

I'd imagine it's the same for the DELL as in only 1 HDD.

There are small form factor (SFF) cases.

Neither will play COD4 without a graphics card upgrade, which is going to be difficult as they're likely to have half-height AGP 4x slots.

MMM...... Would be a massive struggle on the D530 HP, not sure about the DELL.

The RAM would need to upgrade to 1GB or more. The GFX are onboard but there is a slot for a low profile AGP GFX card.

You'd be better off spending some money (£200) on a newer bargain system with a core2duo chip and more up to date GFX card.

Not worth buying if you want to play decent games on this, upgrading this will be alot of hassle and will mean extra cash.

This would be ideal for Office work and internet surfing.

I have a gx260 that i was given off my dad a few years ago, Its in the kids room and is fine for general internet surfing. However my husband got a virus that totally messed it up so this is a great deal for another.
Also my dad put a better graphics card in his but he did have to cut the case to do so and the card was exposed but it worked fine.

Even if possible (i.e. it had an AGP slot), not worth doing as the only graphics card you could fit is a low-profile/half-height one - best you can get is a 7600GS or similar I think. This graphics card matched with the single-core CPU's in these systems, wouldn't cope very well (or not at all) with COD4. And there's also more RAM & possibly a new PSU to get as well.

To play COD4 reasonably well, best you could probably do for a 'readymade' gaming PC on a budget, is to get a ]Dell Vostro 200 dual-core PC for £185 & add a good dedicated graphics card for £50-60 (8800GS at least?), Dell PSU permitting of course.

Ok i would just like to make people aware that the d530 HP machines have an issue with the power supplys they blow up if they have been sat on a shelf for a while we use these at work and i have had several hundred go in the same way.
The power supplys are generic to these models and are very costly to replace if they go bang

Or even cheaper, just buy an Xbox 360 with the game

Cod4 is fairly low level though, even some cheap laptops will run it well with the right drivers.

Agree 100%. It's likley to be a futile exercise to buy this cheap and then spend the same or more likley more money plus the aggro and the time finding upgraded components that fit the bill and the case.

get a pci sata card for about £15 from the likes of scan or ebuyer, you would probably need a power splitter or adapter to convert the old style moulinex power connectors to sata, those are £1 or £2, best to get two in case there isn't a sata power cable inside (older sata drives had legacy power connectors to connect to old style power sockets).

to physically fit inside you would probably have to remove the existing HD, and that gives room for one drive, and you'd had to do a bit of mucking about to squeeze the other drive in. i'd go for the bigger case for more space, as some desktops will squeeze 2 HDs and 2 dvd drives

A virus can do no damage to the hardware - just re-install the operating system or better still put Linux on it. You'll get a much more up to date OS for free, and you won't have to worry about the viruses.

I think you mean Molex.:lol::lol:

I wouldn't bother. Get a new Dell off their website.

pibpob;2633573

or better still put Linux on it.

It's any opportunity with you lot isn't it, Linux fans are like Jehovas Witnesses, they always try to suck you in when you're down.

will the dell be good for my sis, whose never really used a pc before? so good as a starter pack?

What's with the apple in the pic! :w00t:

Is that for scale or are they trying to pass it off as a Mac to the unwitting?

True, but some people enjoy PC gaming to the consoles.

Interesting, didn't know. From the reviews (independent & user), I always got the impression it was a fairly graphics & resource-intensive game.

Strangely enough, it isn't for some reason, there are quite a few threads on the net about low-med level laptops with integrated graphics running it really comfortably.

I would concur with that point as it's a poor design of PSU that runs from front to back of the box (ie long and thin) and has poor airflow for the cooling fan.

We still have over 500 units on the site i work at but i've only seen a handful go faulty and these machine have mostly been on 24/7 for the past few yrs.

We see more failures of the 40gb maxtor hard drive than anything else on these models.

Still a reasonable bargain.

Talk about a hazardous modification!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As stated earlier, these SFF cases need a low profile GFX card which are not too easy to come across (not been looking mind).

How funny, we're still using both these models at work!!

We use those compaqs at work heh. Btw the dell one is out of stock already

Very good price for a cheap PC

Do what i suggested and spend the money on a better/newer machine.

From the SFF brigade we use:

7600
7700
and new shiny 7800.

Tried linux three times. Bloody awfull.:p

I tried Ubuntu and suse first and finally one I cant remember name of. It always has trouble with drivers even though my system is not new. Wireless cards are always a problem. It has no programs that are familiar either. So it's not for me:-D

If it's there for scale then they've either changed the stardard drive widths, or else thats a monster apple!

I got exactly the same Dell one off eBay for £35 delivered, complete with XP and licence. I'd have a look there 1st before buying.
