UPDATE, this apparently works on the UK site as well, thanks simon1976

Probable pricing error on expedia New Zealand's site. Travelling from Manchester to various destinations in Australia and New Zealand with Etihad (I've tried Sydney, Melbourne, and Wellington NZ, and they all work).

Now, the key is, you MUST include a stopover in Dubai (not Abu Dhabi) on the way back. For some reason, if you put Dubai instead of Abu Dhabi, the price drops by approx £820. The only difference, is it includes a free 80 minute coach ride from Abu Dhabi (which you don't have to take)

Cheap departures available up to 10 December - after that, it goes into Christmas prices - more than double these cheap deals.

Various return dates available. I've tried 1st, 2nd and 3rd Jan, and they all work. There may well be others available.

I've booked Manchester to Wellington 2nd Dec, Wellington to Sydney 16th Dec, Sydney to Dubai 1st Jan, Dubai to Manchester 4th Jan for £656, which is spectacularly cheap for that time of year. Booking is paid for and confirmed. If I'd stopped in Abu Dhabi, instead of Dubai the price would have been £1478.

I'm sure with a bit of jiggery pokery, there will be other destinations in Aus and NZ available. Just make sure that you use expedia.co.nz (prices will be quoted in NZD, which are as near as dammit $2-£1), depart Manchester no later than Dec 10, include a stop in Dubai on the return journey, and make sure the airline is Etihad (they may codeshare with Virgin Australia)

UPDATE, apparently it works on the UK site as well, thanks simon1976

Thank you

That's amazingly good for the time of year and direct flights too - hope you have had it all confirmed, you will have an amazing trip. Last year we wanted to spend NYE in Sydney (weren't bothered by anything else so we had some flexibility) and wanted to leave around 10th December and come back around 12th January and watched prices like a hawk. We ended up going Manchester to Dublin (Ryanair and a weekend in Dublin) Dublin to Jakarta (Etihad) then flew with Garuda staight to Lombok (Bali), Xmas in Bali, then used Avios to go to Darwin, a few days in Darwin then Avios to Sydney, then Avios to Jakarta. Flight from Jakarta to Milan (few days in Milan) then back to Manchester with Ryanair. Total cost was £870 when we couldn't find anything remotely close to this price. Bali will always have a special place in my heart and being in Milan at the end of the trip was just brilliant. To most people this may sound slightly weird, but I wouldn't have changed it for the world.

I'd been to Australia and NZ twice before but never for New Year and it was AMAZING! If you are after NYE accommodation the best accommodation on a budget is Sydney Harbour YHA, bookings open around August time and it is right next to the Shangri La Hotel. Also in Wellington, I can recommend the Holiday Inn and also a LOTR tour (if you like them) and head down to Waitomo Caves and Woodland Park for some absolutely bizarre accommodation.

For £610 I would snap this up but I've already got NY in April and Canada in May..... PS, Etihad are great, they also offer you the 'bid for an upgrade to business' if you contact them (even if you didn't book direct with Etihad), they will make sure you have the opportunity to upgrade. If you have never flown business before, it is doing at least once in your life, although we have done it a few times!

Thanks Rachel, yes, it is all confirmed, got the booking reference etc. I have only been once before, at Xmas 2012, and we paid about £1300 each then for similar flights with Qantas. It was extra special, as I met my father and 3 brothers in Queensland for the first time ever (I was 42)
We have family in Lower Hutt, just outside Wellington who we'll be staying with whilst in New Zealand. We're not sure what we're going to do whilst we're there - they'll hopefully have some ideas. We did the Interislander ferry last time, but we'll hopefully get to see a bit more of the South Island this time.
As we've saved a load on the flights, we're going to treat ourselves to a cruise round Sydney Harbour on New Years Eve for the fireworks etc. Really looking forward to that.
We've never been to Dubai though, so if anyone has any advice / tips about Dubai, they'd be much appreciated. We don't want to do anything too major, mainly just chilling / bit of shopping / sightseeing.
Also, the point you made about upgrading to business was interesting - again any more info on how to do that / how much it might cost etc would be appreciated.

Hope some of you get the chance to take advantage of this, as it's a very good deal for December / New Year.

I would add that I booked with expedia NZ last time we went, and had no issues at all.

Good stuff, now the harbour cruise in Sydney, I researched this sooooo much and it all got a bit obsessive. The absolute best experience and that has continually good reviews was the James Craig. Book it as soon as it becomes available, again around July, $550AUD each (it goes up as it gets closer). It is in the Harbour of Lights and think of a Pirates of the Caribbean ship and that's what you have, it was amazing, live band, premium spot at midnight, you even get a tour of the ship inside 'below deck' just wonderful. All food, drink included. It is expensive and there are cheaper ships, but if you are only doing it once...... I have some glorious pictures of the ship, if you would like these PM me your address.

I do prefer the South to be honest. The South, oh, I just love it. Milford Sounds, Te Anau, Christchurch, Franz/Fox Glacier, Wanaka, Queenstown. I could go on.... I did a skydive in Queenstown in beautiful sunny weather, it was amazing, although I would never repeat this. Even now I get the shakes thinking about it, I thought it would combat my fear of heights - it didn't!

Never stopped in Dubai, not my scene really. Regarding the upgrade, I'd wait for your booking reference number using a 6 letter that is the airline ref. I'd then facebook/pm Etihad to say you have booked your flights and want to be contacted if you are eligible to put in a bid to upgrade. If they have availability, they contact you and you bid an amount, so, say the Man-Abu Dhabi leg, then the next leg. There is a minimum, off the top of my head I think the minimum for the first leg to Abu Dhabi may be about £200 each. I've only ever bid the minimum and been successful all occasions. You also get additional miles. It is wonderful if you have night flights and have successfully slept better than I do in my own bed which has meant our time on arrival at our destination is better spent than being cranky with lack of sleep. Not for everyone I realise because of the cost, but you can do it on one leg, it doesn't have to be both. We upgraded when we went to Kathmandu for Everest Base Camp and our flights were the most luxurious part of a 3 week trip! You don't get the chauffer service and it says you don't get entry to the executive lounges, but we have always used these, just find the Etihad lounge and show your business boarding pass.

Thanks again :o) I have PM'd Etihad on Facebook to see if they can offer a bid to upgrade. It would be a huge advantage, as I can't sleep on a plane, and last time we went, even though we stopped off in Singapore, I was absolutely shattered by the time we got to Wellington. It was even worse on the way home, and landing into a dreary Heathrow after being in sunny Australia 24 hours earlier, after no sleep wasn't exactly great.
Thank you for your recommendation regarding the NYE cruise. One problem we have, is we don't land into Sydney (from Mackay on a seperate flight) until 4:35pm on NYE, and a lot of the cruises seem to set off around 6:30-7:00. Now, even if the flight is on time, it might be a push to get through the airport, to the hotel, and then to Darling Harbour in 2 hours, so we might be restricted to one of the later cruises. We're looking a bit more into this.

You don't need to go on the NZ website I did search on the uk site and the price came in at £604 good find

would defintley recommend visiting the Burj al arab in Dubai, you will need to book this ASAP as it get booked up months in advance. We went at night and wished we had visited and had the drinks package during the day as funny as it sounds when you look from the top of the burj at night all you can is your own reflection lol xxx

Trying to use this to get a couple of weeks in Oz at beginning of 2015... price keeps coming up at much higher prices. Sorry to be One Of Those but please could somebody help?

Hot from me, by the way.

Nice deal. The trick is to include a stop for Dubai bus station. The code for this stop is XNB. The other key is to depart on or before December 10 2014. Here is an example on Kayak.co.uk of a flight from London Heathrow to Sydney from December 9 2014 to January 5 2014 for £670
kayak.com/fli…-05
Hope that is useful for someone.

Sorry Jonney, but this price only seems available for departures up to Dec 10. After that, the prices skyrocket.

If going through the uk site you need to

If going through uk site pick Multi destinations Put a date up to the 9th December from Manchester fly back on the 1st jan to Dubai then fly back from Dubai on the 3/4th Jan hope this helps

I am looking to fly to nz in jan/feb 2015 can any of you lovely people give me any advise on cheap flightsc?

Try search engines like skyscanner, Expedia or kayak usually you have to play around with the dates a bit but you should get a pretty good deal around jan/feb as people are skint after Xmas

Looks like prices are back to £1200 unfortunately

I had a play about with dates, and if you try and fly back to Manchester and stay at abu dhabi airport coming from wellington or Sydney on the 10.10am flight back to Manchester ,you will have to wait 10 hours as the incoming plane lands at 11.40pm ,so if you don,t want to stay I Dubai ,its a hell of along time to get home

Got to agree with you re South Island Rachel. Other half & I did all the places you mention + Nelson last Nov and then went on to North Island. Napier in North Island well worth a visit and the hot mud pools in Rotorua are uncanny but I'd go back to South Island quick as a shot again if I had the £££.
If you want to spoil yourself in Wellington try a Club room at the Amora hotel. Well worth the extra IMHO.

Cheers for the deal, have booked flights. Family of four for £518 each to akl, NZ in the month of dec! What a deal! My only question is about the stopover on way back to uk via Abu Dhabi to Dubai. We don't want to do the bus service to Dubai and we just collect our bags and stay in Abu Dhabi for the night, does anyone know and Or have used this before? If this is possible? Cheers if anyone can help.8)

I have previously used Etihad and I very rarely use the coach as it is a free shuttle service and they do not keep tabs on who uses it and who does not. It is perfectly fine to stay in Abu Dhabi and come back to catch the connecting flight.

I haven't done much experimenting on the uk site, but I've booked twice using the NZ site, and not had any problems. The only possible difference, might be foreign exchange fees on the payment card, but if you have one of those cards that don't charge for foreign exchange, and give the perfect exchange rate, it'll be fine.
