Cheap international calls on Three payg

Found 23rd Apr 2014
I was having a browse to see how much Three charge for international calls and stumbled across this.
Their usual international call rates start from £1 a minute, however, if you add a short code before dialing the international number, your calls will cost as little as 1p per minute! (that's for Canada).
Have a look at the link to see the costs of calling various countries' landlines or mobiles. Hope it comes in handy for some. It was a pleasant surprise as I was thinking of getting an o2 payg sim and using their international tariff.

*** yes, there are other networks offering the same or cheaper, but this post is just a heads up for those on Three who weren't aware of such rates***

good post.

Nothing special with those prices I believe giffgaff does something similar.

are you saying VAT is not included in above prices?

Nice one! Anyway guys if you sign up with vyke.com you can either use their app or their access number (local number). Then a typical call to European countries cost 9p an hour. I signed up my house number too (as I have unlimited landline) and I dial local number then international. The quality is stunning and works out very cheap.

More info for price at 9p here:

o2 do international sim too with similar rates

skype credit is still the cheapest around

Lyca mobile????

Yes that's true. I was looking at O2 but thought I'd see what Three charge as I am already with them. Now there is no need to change network for me as both networks cost the same to the country I want to call :-) o2 would charge more for local calls, I think it's like 30p, whereas with Three it costs 3p for calls to UK landlines and mobiles

It's just more of an informative post. It's just bad on Three's part that they don't advertise this and have two separate costings for international calls, one with short code, one without.

possibly, but this doesn't require data/apps/software. Just your normal phone.

Just compared French mobiles: 10p vs 5p with giffgaff (which doesn't require a prefix, so more convenient) so really not interesting for me. Landlines are cheaper (3p vs 4p) but less useful.

Not true either, I use Skype To Go, call off landline/mobile to predetermined UK landline number which forwards to the landline in South Africa. Although I don't use PAYG credit I pay £9.76/month for unlimited international calls.

Does this apply to 3 Contract users as well?

I'm afraid not. Contract customers need to buy an add on for £15 which gives you 3000 minutes to select countries. The list of countries is different to the one on PAYG. I have no idea why the countries are different contract details

Thanks, good info.

So if I took my Three PAYG to USA where they have their 'Feel at home' - I could call USA landline/mobile numbers while there for 3p a minute?

Hmm... That's a good question. I don't have the answer but it would be great if that is possible!
Although I'm sure they'll know you're not in UK because you'll be using a US network.

Nothing special in these rates, lots companies are comparable with even better rates on some locations when calling from a landline.

Well balls to that then. Not sure why networks seem to treat their PAYG users better than their contract users these days, probably because the PAYG users can leave in a heartbeat.

Actually I think I may have just answered my own question there.

Last time I checked China was not on GiffGaff's cheap country list so was £1/min, one major factor in ditching GiffGaff.

Also, this deal has been discussed on HUKD before. It's easy to forget to put in the prefix and Three will then make a mint on you. Also I could never confirm if thus prefix system works on Three contracts.

Don't know why some people are saying you have to pay £15 to get discount calls internationally on contract. That is not true and its actually completely free and just comes out of your minutes! - hotukdeals.com/dea…943

Lyca Mobile is much cheaper i think

I've always been using dialacode. Works on o2, orange, t mobile, and three.

Lyca Mobile is much cheaper i think

It depends, for France it's the most expensive by far, even more than Vodafone for landlines (and Lebara is worse):

France Mobile:
- GiffGaff 5p
- Three 10p
- Lyca Mobile 19p
- Lebara 19p
- Vodafone 25p

France landline:
- Three 3p
- GiffGaff 4p
- Vodafone 5p
- Lyca Mobile 7p
- Lebara 9p

Not always, see my previous comment, they are amongst the most expensive for France, by far.

Just compared the countries I care for docs.google.com/spr…tml
Green is cheapest, Red is most expensive.
