Ikea also do a coffee table in the lack range for about £20 which takes 12 of the plates on the top. It also has a shelf underneath which is a perfect fit height wise for the lego storage bricks. Got a picture of one that I'll try and add on

What a fantastic idea, I have one of those tables in the garage waiting for the tip, it now has a new life! What sort of glue did you use to stick the base plates down? Thanks

Are those plates flush with the edges of that table?

There are a variety of possibilities using the IKEA tables

You can stick them down with anything, glue, double sided tape, blu-tack etc.

Some other cool options on ikeahackers.net such as:

example 2
example 3

just google "ikeahackers.net + lego"

Never mind...I thought that was a raised border edge around the table :o)

About an inch or two gap around the edge (it's a black table and you should be able to see the border effect)

On mine I didn't glue down so it would be easier to change road layout.

For anyone with one of the lego train sets a complete circle would fit on 3 x 3 base plates, so the coffee table one would allow for some straight sections and platforms too.

Love that table. Fab idea! Thanks for sharing.

what a great idea. I have a table in the loft all marked up. will look like new with this or doesn't matter for a toy table.

We did something similar using 2 of the grey plates and some Trofast units and boxes from Ikea. Was around £50 plus the plates.
