2017 update

There are deals to be had on the student site if you qualify! If you're building a NAS you can save a bundle. Here's how!

Prerequisites:
- an ISIC card
- An e-mail address that corresponds to this list (e.g. .ac.uk, .edu etc etc):
store.wdc.com/sto…ols

If your education e-mail address isn't on the list drop them a line on: WDStoreUK@wdc.com

Shipping & Order Placement:
Shipping is free on all orders!

One final word of warning:
Orders once placed CANNOT be cancelled, you have to return them. So make sure you order correctly folks!

The Process:
- Go to the WD Student Store
- Log in/create an account using your ac.uk email address
- Buy one of their products containing multiple WD Red drives for far less than the usual price of the drives*
- Install the drives in your chosen PC/NAS
- Celebrate knowing you've just saved some serious money on quality drives

*works on some sizes of drive but not others, see below for details!

have you checked the warranty on the reds individually inside rather than the book duo warranty? that would be good to know!

I don't need a student, but thanks anyway.
Nice I got ISIC add on when I got my nus card for Amazon
I don't get how to do this? Is there a promo code or something?
Been 25 days and what I ordered (which was in stock at the time btw) still hasn't shipped. Seeking a refund now.

Judging from all the WD recertified HDD’s on HUKD that may actually have saved you from losing your coursework!

I have indeed. They're marked as 'OEM' by Western Digital and you can't register the drives seperately (I tried that and e-mailed support to see if I could). You register the enclosure, if a drive fails you just send that drive back for replacement.

As per usual/recent of WD, most of the items are out of stock.

Most of the WD Reds and all but the 12TB Duo were in stock when I posted it up initially. I guess they have limited 'student' stock, as they appear to have things in stock on the regular site, but then not in stock on the student site.
True, the best deal was the 8TB My Book Duo @ £96.50 each, but that went quckly!

It's worth checking the stock levels on a morning, as quite often they seem to have more in stock each day.

These aren't recertified drives or products, these are all brand new.

The RMA process for Western Digital is apparently much better than that of the likes of Seagate (I've experience of the latter and it's a real PITA).

My Cloud EX4 16TB:
£508.99

For that you get 4 x 4TB WD Red drives and the enclosure to then sell on if you don't need it! I'd expect that to easily sell for £100 on eBay, leaving you with 4 x 4TB WD red drives for about £100 each.

Log into the student WD store, then hover over external storage in the menu. Click on desktop, click on 'My book' if that's what youre after. Select 4TB and the price should be £80.99.

N.b. the hard drive contained in this enclosure isn't a WD Red, it'll likely be a blue, but if you're not using it in a NAS that's fine.

Mine are working perfectly in a Synology NAS. I gave them a format prior to putting them in, but they didn't actually need it. It's a total steal for the money if you're after WD Reds in 4TB form.

I must confess I did consider ordering another couple, but as I don't really need them, I'll do without.
Showing at £439.00 for me now. I thought I had submitted an order but it seems to have not done it or its been cancelled.

Can anyone post the prices for 6TB reds please? I need 5!

@jakg

£206.10 if purchased as a red drive
£135.99 if purchased with a mybook duo (2 year warranty, 2 HDD per duo ordered)

The latter is a bargain IMO.

Scorpion. It's not just students who qualify for the discounts in the WD education store.

store.wdc.com/sto…ols

I e-mailed WDStoreUK@wdc.com and got them to add my schools domain so that staff are eligible for the discounts too.

I then bought a 12TB WD MyCloud EX2.
I have a question which might be silly but would help me a lot.

I would like to get the ex2 NAS with 2*4TB drives inside.

Now instead of paying 400£ they are asking (plus it is out of stock) my idea was to pick up a my book duo 8TB for 200£ and an empty ex2 for 85£ and simply moving the drives from one to the other. This costs me 285£ and leaves me with an empty My Book Duo enclosure.

Now what I am interested in is whether the current deals on the Toshiba E300 drives Toshiba E300 3TB drive 66£

Would 2 of these work in a my book duo? And if yes with Raid 1 setup? As then I could gift/sell the my book duo rather than having an empty enclosure. Also another alternative is to pick up 2 WD red 3TB drive from say amazon and put those in wd my book duo, but I am interested whether the drives need to have some sort of software support to work in My book Duo.

Any help would be much appreciated as I would hate to throw away a good Raid 1 capable external enclosure and it might bring my price even more down.

I think this will work yes, however a word of caution!

The My Book Duo uses hardware encryption, so when you boot it up the chip inside the enclosure writes info the HDDs which then means that to access the content on the discs you need the enclosure. This is bad because should the enclosure fail there is no method for getting your data off the discs, the best you could do is format them. For that very reason my enclosure is boxed up and will probably never see service. If you're happy to take that risk with your data, then it should be fine though.

Thank you very much for your advice.

And I would presume buying a second enclosure won't solve this issue? But if I am not missing something this is a problem with the My Book Duo to start with (regardless of the drives in it) and is an absolutely massive issue as I guess most people would buy 2 bay especially to safeguard data if one of the disks fail. I suppose I can only hope that the chance of enclosure failing is low compared to the hdd's, but still this is a major issue. So there is no way to turn off encryption?
