Check your vehicle’s MOT status and history online free

Found 18th Mar 2012
You can check the current MOT status of any vehicle online. This might be one that you own already or a second hand vehicle that you are thinking of buying.
The online MOT status check gives you information about:
the date of the last test
mileage on the vehicle at the time of the test
the expiry date of the test
You can compare the online information against the paper certificate to make sure it’s genuine.
To find out details of previous MOT tests on a vehicle you can do an online MOT history check.
You can only look up information online going back to 2005 when the MOT Scheme was computerised.
The MOT history check will give you the following information:
full test details
mileage at the time of each test

i have used this service and is great when you turn up knowing all the old history

To use this service you will need the vehicle registration mark along with an MOT test number from one of the following:
• VT20 test certificate
• VT30 refusal certificate
or the document reference number from
• V5C registration certificate

You cant just plug in a Reg number and get the details....

Thanks for the info

Awesome!

I thought everyone knew about this? Heat added though for those who don't.

If you only have the new keeper supplement part of logbook (green bit) then don't forget to drop the 1st digit of the document reference number (should be 11 digits not 12) otherwise it won't work.

Knew about askmid but not this. Thanks

Surely if you own the vehicle and have all the documentation required to fill out the form
you'll know the MOT status anyway.

Cold.

then in that case it is absolutely useless as you would have to be there in the middle of buying a car from someone and then having to check there and then to verify both paper and online are the same and of course the history of it.

Agreed.

It's about as much use as a one legged man in an @rse kicking competition!

Thank you, my nephew gave his old car to my daughter and I have been nagging him for ages for the MOT Cert. He said it was due "in the summer". Used this and found out the exact date MOT is due, so no need to nag anymore. Thanks

Its been around for years, they've even change the domain name,as its was under motinfo.gov.uk before being moved to direct gov website
We use when buying cars to check the mileages, as non-one is going to clock a car every year.

Now that the new style of M.O.T certificate is just a printout on a piece of A4 paper....checking it's authentication the VOSA site when buying a new car is a must. Even if it passed it's last MOT many sellers will try deceiving buyers by reprinting a new advisory sheet and hide the true facts

whats the delay on this showing? I got mine done on the 9th but according to the dvla, last issued was 14/3/2011

This also shows you the mileage that your car was at each MOT, so extremely useful to find if out if a car has been clocked back

This post is not relevant. Whats next? someone will put a posting up telling us that The metro newspaper is free???

This has been avalable free for years.

Have you actually read the thread....It's quite apparent that some people were not aware of this service. Spend a little time trying to work out how the heat system works on here before posting your own narrow view without considering other peoples.

I didn't know about this along with quite a few others so it would seem so heat from me. Why are people treating this posting with disdain? Just because it is of no use to you or already know about it doesn't mean it is a waste of time for others. Sometimes people can be so insular

Didn't know this, thanks for the info!

can highlight clocked back cars, voted hot

you can ask for a photocopy of the v5 certificate and the reference number is on the bottom, its what i did when i bought my last car. lets you see if its had loads of work done or had a relatively easy life. of course keep in mind this wont show any major repairs done outside of MOT's.

Don't see your problem with my post. It was FACT.

Never knew about this. Handy to know. Thanks

nice thanks

thanks didn't know about this either . { I do get a bit fed up with the sarcastic comments from people who know about certain things and assume everyone else should too ! } best to keep those comments to yourself as it stops others posting decent information that may helpful to someone else

slamdunkin .... don't see your problem. I give the post heat & say its been online for years ???

thanks for posting have some heat did know about it but forgot just told my friend he buying car on fri so hope this helps him

heat added, always tried to tell this to as many people as i could, but this surely is the place to share such info for the sake of those who don't know

Has been around for a while, very useful. Used in anger when lied to by a garage.
Handy if the advisory reports something.

Looks great, thanks.

Thank you for this info Danny. I for one didn't know this. It will be useful when I replace my car.

oh great stuff I heard about this but forgot to look for it. heat added.

very good to know heat added

I used this in a case against a car dealer who sold me a ford focus that showed 62k on the clock wen I bought it but when it broke down and the garage I got it towed to said something very wrong with this car... this showed 144k at last MOT it was a taxi. So glad I found it.

Did you take his business to the local Trading Standard Office? What happened next? Care to share more of your story to the rest of fellow HUKD's on buying used cars via dealers/private?

A van parked just outside his business premises with large words advertising his shoddy dodgy business practices could have easily harmed his trade. Just park & leave it there once in a while with some hidden security cameras decked out around the van will catch anyone trying to vandalise it. Then the rest of the public will get the message Hell, the local newspaper might want to know your story.

This free online MOT check service is great for clues on the annual basic safety checks & true valid mileage indicators to verify the legality of road worthiness of the vehicle but this is only one small part of buying 2nd hand. You'll be surprise what dealers/private individual would do just to bump up the car's value. You're suppose to have more consumer protection against car dealers but that doesn't stop them from trying it on. Even a very good cleaned/polished car can easily hide a cars' true value. You can't easily just strip the car's engine in broad daylight to check the piston's are OK so any extra paperwork that is available is good for background checks before you hand over any of your own hard-earn cash.

Just recently had my car checked & passed the MOT with no advisories this year but got look more like laser print out MOT cert than the old official green ones last year. Got a shock at first but checked online & confirm everything is OK so don't be alarmed when you get yours this year. It does look like it can easily be faked but then DVLA will always have the real copies so do check yours or others when you buy a 2nd hand car. Not sure will DVLA will ever digitise all MOT going further back but it will be good to reduce fraud further.

Heat added since any info like this will help others to avoid been sold a lemon is good as buying a car is the 2nd most expensive expense after buying a house. Nobody likes been sold a lemon. Don't forget there are also people who may have emigrated years ago but may have just got back to find new changes, processes & procedures that they're not aware of.

Very Very cold......
