Highly recommend Chiltern Railways for passengers travelling from Birmingham and West Midlands to London, and also London Midland, can get some brilliant priced fares with both operators... Everyone always thinks of Virgin Trains and their fares are usually far higher, unless you get a bargain advance fare. Yes granted, train journey times are a little longer, but the savings on tickets can be worth it. Walk on fares are also substantially cheaper.

Yep - spot on: "... And once you’re there, you can make unlimited journeys on London’s buses and tubes too! ..."

The image above seems to say this offer is a family travelcard. So being a travelcard would include unlimited onward travel from Marylebone on all rail and bus services in zone 1-6. It would also get you a 1/3 discount on the river boat services. This makes the ticket much better value than any of the advance tickets mentioned above, and also the non restrictive nature of the return journey would be attractive. PS voted cold because of "be gentle- it's my first post"

As usual you can get cheaper advance single tickets for a specific train time. I was in London a few weeks ago and the two single journeys were about £15. Don't forget you also can have the london 2-4-1 days out if you pick up a leaflet at marylebone. You can also try a ticket split website as occasionally breaking up a trip to more single tickets and bring this down too.

Ohhh well, thats just the way the cookie crumbles... The train company that operates to Southampton is completely unrelated to this thread. If you want you can private message me your dates and times and I'll have a look, but I have no special access to fares that you would be unable to see. Try National Express.

Does this include children as it would not let me choose children when choosing the tickets. Also it asks for names of passengers when booking, so can it be transferred to others if plans change? thanks.

Yep, looks like you can only make b'ham to London and back with an overnight (and wasted tickest as above) as earliest B'ham departure is 12:55 and latest London departure is 13:15 (or thereabouts).

That would be a short rail journey back out of Brum on another line (from New Street) but not difficult at all. Would cost more than 50p though!

You'll need to get an extra ticket to start your journey from Birmingham; ie the booking system will only let you choose/book a journey starting in London and that journey needs to be earlier than the return journey so for example London - Birmingham at 9.40am and Birmingham - London is at 3pm, obviously you can't book the Birmingham - London as the first journey, so book the earliest London - Birmingham possible (you won't use it anyway) , then select a Birmingham - London which is actually going to be your first journey, and buy a third ticket from London - Birmingham which will be your actual return are sold as 25p singles so you should be fine - however be flexible with the times if you intend to do this as a day trip as it seems the Birmingham - London trains arrive in the afternoon - might be more suitable for a trip longer than just a day :)

I doubt if anyone could help you based on such flimsy information. I suggest that you play around with the Chiltern Railways link and the Megabus and National Express sites to see what's the best price you can find for the dates you want to travel.

Could someone help me please? I would like a bham to london return, can't seem to leave london anytime after 1.45 pm? How do I book a return? Thanks

It wasn't necessary to expand. What you posted made no sense. You posted dates and prices that made it more expensive to travel Megabus than Chiltern and in the context of the ticket being from London to Birmingham that made no sense. However you went wrong by not considering a Birmingham to London return, which some required, which would be cheaper using the Megabus site. Also, I think by now the majority of travellers already know about Megabus and would be checking their website for a cheap price. On your latter post about wifi on Virgin Trains; I think you'll find that Virgin provide free wifi to First Class passengers only. Those who travel standard class, in which class Megabus passengers would be seated, can use wifi on board but it has to be paid for.

Megabus buses also have free wifi, although in the context of this thread we are comparing to Megabus trains, not Megabus buses. On the London/Birmingham route, Megabus trains partner with Virgin trains and whilst Virgin trains offer some form of wifi service, I have no idea if it is offered free to Megabus train customers.

Took the train yesterday. It was a little over 1.5hrs late arriving into Birmingham Moor St due to points failure in London. It felt like an an old rattly train, but wasn't very full, so plenty of legroom. Journey coming back was fine (although quite congested).

great deal, managed to book 2 return tickets from moor st to london you have to return the same day which is ok for £4......great.

Perfect thanks! Just what I needed to book for my family coming down to see me.

Similar experience - Wi-Fi very patchy (on the outward journey and on the return journey), train 10 mins late (on the outward journey and on the return journey), comfortable seats, nice to have a power socket at every seat and decent sized windows - less claustrophobic. Slower than Virgin but a better experience at both stations since they are less congested.

Hot for the pic alone

So there you have it. Birmingham is better than London, people will always give you the time of day,it's got shops and it's got an IMAX. At this rate we'll be flooded with Cockneys over the next few weeks :(

I've spent about 23 years in London and at least 14 in and around Birmingham. On the whole London is horrid and is getting worse by the day. Birmingham, Manchester and other large cities are following London's decline but are still a few years away from the level of nastiness that London has reached thus far. This whole country is on a downward spiral with London leading the way. Morality; respect; kindness; tolerance; law & order - all on their way out :(

As a londoner, I can understand when people say london is crap. It usually depends though, some places are nicer than others, same goes for Birmingham I suppose. Half the people who laugh at Birmingham have never been to it and only base their hatred for it on various comedians saying it's terrible.

Yes you can book as little as 3 or 4 days away and you can book anytime up to 6 weeks in advance. They only release tickets upto 6 weeks ahead, so you can not book anything for March yet, but every day another day is released into the calendar. The earlier you book it usually gets the better prices.... prices are £1, £3, £5, so on and on. Not sure how many tickets they have available at each price but once the £1 ones have sold they then become £3 etc etc.

This price has been around for years now. The trains depart from London Marylebone which may be more accessible to some than Euston and also rather than arrive at Birmingham New street, they stop at Moor Street and Snow Hill. Also you go through a lot of countryside (up to Banbury) and the views are scenic.

Ah excellent thanks for your help :)

If you get the SMS tickets, and you have a compatible phone that can display the graphic "barcode", you swipe in & out at Marylebone, but don't need to swipe in & out at the stations without automatic barriers. In any case, you're ok. This from the 'help' files accessed from the cheap seats offer pages "Can I board the train at any station? Tickets are valid only on the date and train service shown on the ticket. You may board and alight at any Chiltern Railways station, as long as it is between the points stated in on your ticket. For example, with a Birmingham to London E-Day ticket, you may join at Leamington Spa and alight at High Wycombe, as long as the train stops at these points." So, basically, if you want to travel from Solihull to London, you buy a ticket for travel from Birmingham. If you want to travel from High Wycombe to London, you buy a ticket for travel from Banbury or Bicester.

Thanks, there are no checks at both Solihull and Widney Manor/Dorridge which are both alot closer for me, they are just basic stations on the Network West Midlands lines but Chiltern stop at them. As long as you don't swipe in or swap these for tickets at the station then this is great!

Will probably get away with it if there are no automatic barriers, or ticket checking at Solihull. I know you don't need to "swipe in" (the tickets are SMS text message tickets, sent to your mobile phone), as there are no scanners or automatic barriers at Banbury or Bicester, and these tickets are available from those stations.
