Well next year it will be free to use without a subscription. But at this moment in time a subscription is required.
Cold, sorry but even on offer I find these hugely expensive for such a simple device. If you don't care about Stadia (not much to care about at the moment IMHO) you can get otherwise the same functionality from devices like Fire TV 4K Stick and the equivalent Roku streaming stick or box, both of which often dip under £30 on offer, e.g. hotukdeals.com/dea…750

Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITV, NOW, most web videos

There are apps that use the TV as a display and enable you and friends to play games.

Stadia is a paid service that streams full "AAA" games to the Chromecast so you don't have to pay for a console or PC.

They work very well with Google assistant, with a compatible TV this will enable voice commands like "hey Google, play friends on Lounge" and the TV will come on and and be playing friends.

Very handy gizmo, but don't one. If you want an ultra buy a Xioami mi box s as that does all of that PLUS has a remote and can play emulators.
This is the regular price . I want to buy one but will wait for boxing Day / new year eves sale

Don't mislead people with Now TV please as their content isn't in 4k, in fact you have to pay more just to have it in 1080p!

I don't think ITV even have 1080p content and BBC will have very little 4k content.

Netflix have a fair bit now at least. I agree with the others though, if you aren't playing games just get a Amazon Fire TV 4K.
Casting/mirroring content from phone to TV can be useful to some, it lets me get Amazon music on my av amp for instance
I'd recommend the Mi Box S over this, same/similar price and has 'Chromecast Ultra built-in' which I my experience is the exact same as Chromecast Ultra but there are some minute differences that I can recall of the top of my head.

Also, Fire TV Stick 4K is another good option.

Actually, not yet (I think) - the stadia bundles that currently exists includes a Chromecast Ultra with a special firmware version that supports Stadia.
All Chromecast ultras now support Stadia
Stadia’s bobbins though.
Been this price at Currys for quite a while now.

They just patched all the old ones to support it too.

Got Stadia, and must say am very impressed. Whilst it definitely is short of games on release, the flexibility it offers is fantastic. Playing A+ console /PC games on any computer in a Chrome browser, on my Pixel 4XL mobile and TVs with a Chromecast Ultra is kinda revolutionary.

I remember all the hate on HUKD way back towards Google Chromebooks (that seems to have died down now peeps have realised and got off their jaundiced views that Windows PC or nothing).

What Google and Stadia is attempting is as game changing as what Netflix was to DVD rental stores.

Internet streaming of games is the future with cloud based games run in data centres vs. traditional consoles.
It’s not revolutionary though, it’s been available from nVidia for literally years. And that includes hundreds of games. And it actually works.
