Other than the resolution, is the 4k version higher specced in other areas? Performance etc?

The video linked at the bottom talks you through and even shows the differences. 4k has 2gb ram vs 1.5gb on the HD, slightly snappier in loading and some of the menus otherwise not a huge difference.

Give this a whirl and go into settings and trim to just the apps bar. (and change so home calls are intercepted). I have the 4k version of the Chromecast with Google TV and it's fast enough before but super quick with this (no ads and suggested content etc). It's free and the 'paid for' features are very minimal but worth buying to support the developer.

I'm looking to just power it with the usb slot at the the back of my tv, if possible

The HD one is already pretty new.

These are often on offer, likely this is ready for easter, it's one of the typical products that is always on sale during any sale period, such as black friday, after christmas, easter, prime day etc, this isn't even a good price for the 4k one, I paid £27.99 last year but it seems to be more expensive now since they introduced the cheaper one.

    Chromecast with Google TV:

    4K version has more RAM

I have both cube 4k mk2 and 4k chromecast. Chromecast is much much slower, running and installing apps. Even day to day use is more annoying. Software is half baked too : apps are less compatible even though its got Google apps. Lots of crashes and lock ups. Locking the screen in landscape mode is not possible. Equalizer apps are not working well. Widgets not working well. It is killing vpn in the background. I'd rather take fire cube any time. Even remote is very basic. Add extra 20 quid and get amazon device. I did try factory resets on chromecast. Still let down by mediocre software. In both im using Volf Launcher.

I have both 4K versions of the Chromecast and Firestick. Both run Plex, IPTV and VPN. Haven't experienced any lock up on the Chromecast nor my VPN app being killed in the background.

Sounds like you've got a dodgy unit.
