Game Description

Cities XL allows gamers to develop cities on realistic 3D maps using an incredible collection of unique structures and monuments based on American, Asian and European-influenced architectural styles. The maps feature a variety of environments: mountains, hills, canyons, beaches and islands, all set in different climates from tropical to desert, Mediterranean to temperate.

Players must create the right combinations of social services, leisure activities, special events and other job opportunities within their cities in order to feed, clothe, employ and entertain their citizens. Be it planning and building a new zoo, public park, residential neighborhood or transit system - there's always a fresh and exciting challenge for would-be city managers and mayors in Cities XL.

The game's online features and services will allow players to create interconnected cities on virtual and persistent planets. Mayors can share and trade with one another, specialize their economy and team up with befriended cities to create sprawling metropolises.

Life on the planet will be punctuated by events and competitions - a concert held in one town may, for example, be attended by visitors from other areas who can also enjoy a walk around the city to admire the urban creations of multiple players. By combining a fantastic single-player game with the social and multiplayer aspects of an MMO, Cities XL will shape the future of the genre by offering more variety, bigger cities and multiple gameplay layers.

Very unfriendly install that froze up my computer for several minutes and seemed very haphazard. You have to register the game online and create an account before you can play. (So for anyone without an internet connection you won't be able to play it - not that you'll be reading this review anyway.) And you'll also have to download a large update of 314MB before you can play. The game seems to have some redeeming features, mainly the graphics, but as a long-time player of the Sim City series this game feels unnatural and foreign to me. Luckily I only paid £9.99 for it. I'll be generous and award it a 3/5.

Not a bad game, could be better. The online mode was fun when it wasn't lagging, but that has now been stopped so you can only play solo.

having purchased this game, without using the demo first i feel now let down as i think its just an upmarket version of Sim City. The write up of this game makes out it to be fantastic. but i found that i can do anything like what it says you can do,maybe im reading it wrong but. Also the online game is laggy as hell and the contracts you sign cancel after a while and this spoilt my game. i happened to mention in the chat that is was the same as sim city and was told it was better because of the graphics well to be frank spending £24.99 for better graphics isnt worth it in my opinion. Also you have to subscribe £6.00 a month if you want to play it online i can see many people droping the online game after the initial 1 week free trial. In my opinion this game is over rated in the sense that its says theres loads of gameplay well if you call making zones like sim city and building raods great gameplay ? well ?. think ive wasted £24.99 myself

Does not allow team cities where you can create a group and then all build a unique city together where you can discuss ideas and how to make things better. Single player has certain features missing that you may have seen in the sim city series, right now this is the closest you can get to SC5. Graphics are nice but don't expect much from the people of your city, the game engine uses animated rather than realistic characters and this does not help the game. Bonus content is quite good but bear in mind Steam has it's own exclusive building so you won't have everything from the start. Overall a worthy effort but think very carefully about online, all is not what it seems so I only give this 1 star until they add the missing elements.
