Book with an independent or council garage, not one of these franchises, your car and your wallet will thank you.

No they don’t. My 11yr old car passed with one advisory and they didn’t force anything else on me like servicing, really friendly and enjoyed a really nice free hot drink in the warm waiting room!
I've used this and they are very good and are honest.
Great for the price

Cheers op
Were losing money on this lads, give it an easy passage.
Just check via the app that there is an ATS on the list near you that does MOT testing. Don't assume your nearest ATS does MOTs.
I was up for this until I discovered the nearest one on the list was miles away from me.
I used this. No issues, no pushy sales all good

I went in for an air con recharge and they told me that I needed new tyres. I didn’t ask them to check the tyres, they were fine and had passed a recent MOT.

They ruined my brake once.
I took my car in and it failed on minor things really. I repaired those myself and tried to book the re-test and they kept saying they couldn't because they didn't know when the agency tester was back. They never called me back after 4 attempts. Then on the 5th they said it was after 2 weeks i had to have it fully re-tested. As only £18 I agreed. When I took it back they failed it again on new, more serious issues, which they showed me. I wasted £50 and about 10 hours of my time over 4 weeks in the end. I would avoid ATS if you can
Thanks for this OP. Prompted me to check our cars and realise that the wife's (car) MOT is due in a little over a month. There's an ATS right by my work and in that particular branch they are great.

For anyone who doesn't rate ATS, it is worth noting that there are numerous other offers for reduced price MOTs on Groupon at other garages. When I checked near me the offers started at £14, although I would agree with the warnings from others that any discount MOT is likely to be offset by over zealous fault finding resulting in costly remedial works. Still, worth checking if a garage you do trust has an offer on through Groupon.
Not Every ATS are honest , I had this offer before, they will definitely find a fault with your car and recoup the money .
I think with both National and ATS, and I use them both, it's about getting to know the staff... both my local branches are excellent at the moment; friendly, not pushy and seemingly honest. All it takes is a change of management, with their "fresh focus" and "target-driven philosophy" and all that changes. They can get pushy, start failing vehicles on a coin toss decision - I've had this from the managers themselves! If you're lucky though, these MOT offers, service checks etc., are excellent. If I needed an MOT right not, I'd be all over this

Heated OP!
There is zero profit in a garage charging under 20 for a mot. They pay a fee to dvsa .Expensive mot equipment needs to be bought and mot testers need training courses to keep license + normal overheads .Pure false economy and all those saying its great value and honest probably have a affiliation with the company.Funnily enough the failures all relate to the parts these companies have on the shelf!
I've had aircon gas refilled at ATS in Chesterfield twice, On different vehicles. The second time I had it done they stated battery was ready for replacing. I didn't ask for a battery check etc... Tbh it was the original battery and it was over 5 years old so replaced it myself as a precaution.

Personally it may be hit and miss, Yes some will pass, some will fail. Some will be honest and some will try and sell you something else etc.. I'd strongly advise you to have your MOT's done at either a Council MOT test center or somewhere like We only MOT. They offer no pass, no pay on cars less than 10 years old. Or £25 for cars over 10 years old. You then pay the difference when it passes. Yes it's usually a little more. Was £45 in total the last time I used them and I've had passes and fails. Now though my mate is an MOT tester so he does mine

Shame they have no branches in London
Just gone for it with 12% cashback through Quidco, so hopefully £15.83 all in.

my experience, I always bought halford auto free MOT voucher or half price £17 in the past. free MOT £0! My golf and vw passat both are 10 years old with good service. very smoothly pass without any problem. I understand this business model will try best to find out any possible issue during MOT test, but your car is good, they can not say it is bad. Because any MOT test is a legal file, you can appeal if they make mistake. I enjoy this business model, because they will test my car with the highest standard. That is safe for me and other road user, save MOT test money for me as well.

For those who have good experiences with these cheap offers, great. Personally I'm never tempted, always use an independent MOT only place that charge £50.
They will normally fail the car on 1 or 2 items then rack up a load of advisories which NEED TO / SHOULD BE / UNSAFE
Always challenge them for what is a MOT failure usually a bulb out or hand brake adjustment then hundreds of £ for unnecessary work at that time
Took my Gf’s car to an ATS with a voucher recently passed no problem with a couple of advisories. Booking my own car in soon. I think it’s fine unless you’re trying to get an MOT on your banger with marginal safety!
Took the wife's car in today (low mileage, 63 plate Fiesta) - passed with no issues at all.
