Is there anywhere I can buy a cheap Windows 8 key?

Same spec, but with quad core i7 is £625. Anyone bought from here before? If so what's the build quality like?

PCSpecialist had quite a good reputation in the past and do receive awards from the various PC/Laptop magazines and Clevo are an American brand that I wasn't aware was even regularly available in the UK outside of the grey market. They are generally performance oriented operating like Acer, stacking them high and selling cheap.

However, after checking it's PCSpecialist rebranding them as they've always done.

I bought a PC from these guys in December 2012. I've had no issues since.

I ordered a beefier version of this laptop two days ago. Almost had a heart attack when I saw this, considering I paid £800
Edited by: "hasman1" 10th Apr 2014

I've had a PC specialist laptop for about 2 years now and i've been really impressed with it. I bought it for around the same price and i believe is has a 660m GTX - which is still doing well (i just finished the new tomb raider on high settings).

Its not going to win any fashion awards - its a very functional laptop with plenty of space for upgrades. I was surprised about the battery life too - i can get around 5 hours of movies/browsing. For a gaming laptop that was quite nice!

I'll definitely be buying my next laptop from them. You seem to get a lot for your money.

Thats not a bad price at all. I don't need a laptop of this spec but you do get a lot of laptop for £560 there. Just need to add Windows 7/8 and maybe 4gb ram

I agree, certainly at 1080p gaming as well. Better off spending the saved money on memory

UPDATE: sorry, only just noticed the i5 was a dual core rather than quad. I would say in that case, get the i7 (depending on what games you plan to play).

That's a feature pack - to go from win 8 plain to pro, not from a previous version. The student upgrades the best bet from a previous version, otherwise a plain OEM version for £75 ish, e.g.

ebuyer.com/581…AzQ

Very good spec for the money, especially as it's 1080p and actually has good enough graphics to handle any modern game at that resolution (albeit with detail turned down on some).

Not a great configuration...

Change the dual core to a Quad core I7, upgrade the memory to 16GB change the wireless card to 802.11AC and the 500GB drive to a 120GB SSD and the CD /DVD to an extra drive caddy. All that extra costs just £100... absolute no brainer if you are even considering buying the above spec laptop.

thats some spec though its the lower power ddr3 version of the gpu

The bottleneck is certainly the gpu, so no point going extra on the cpu expecting better gpu performance

Bought the 13inch ws230 from them last month... couldn't be happier after a long time searching for the successor to my m11x

Is this on offer or their standard price?

The 13inch version appears to cost a lot more for less specs...

Have a read of the review of the Schenker M504...

notebookcheck.net/Rev…tml

This uses the DDR3 version of the Nvidia 850m and it's looks really good; almost the same as the previous generation Nvidia 765m DDR5 card. Deffo capable of doing 1080p gaming for many games.

In fact the laptop in this review is not a million miles away from what's on offer at PCSpecialist. Just add the IPS panel, an SSD and a slightly faster CPU and it's almost there...

so is it more expensive because of the smaller factor...?

Just re-read the Notebookcheck review I just posted and it's the same basic Clevo barebones laptop. The PCSpecialist one is the Clevo W650SH while the one in the review is the W650SJ. not sure what the difference is but I'd guess it's the IPS display.

I have had a Clevo W350ET from PCSpecialist now for just over a year. I am not impressed. I had assumed a custom build would be better value for money, better bang for the buck, since you can included what you want and exclude what you dont. It certainly looks like a good price on the site. And big for a lot of people is probably getting a highish end, gaming capable graphics card without spending a fortune. Well, that was the idea for me, but it is not better value for money than buying a branded laptop of the shelf.

I really thought that custom building might get me that little bit extra for the same price. However, I was prepared for some areas to perhaps not be anything special. But all that has happened is that by paying less, I have received less. Sure, I got my 3rd gen i7 and 660M, which at the time was decent, but the reduction of value in other areas is beyond what I imagined.

The chassis is absolutely terrible and disgusting, like nothing I have ever seen or imagined could be used for a laptop. You can see it is not great in the pictures, so you know it is not going to be a looker which is fine by me. I dont need it to be flash. I dont pay money for that. I would never buy an iPhone or a Mac for example. But it is not about looks. Cheap, cheap plastic, that flexes like a ruler. I can literally bend the whole body very noticeably. I can easily pull away the boarder of the screen, to see the actual edges of the LCD. The outside of the screen is also frighteningly bendy and detachable.

There is an absolutely absurd (money saving?) design choice where it has all sharp edges. Your wrists rest on the sharp front edge of the chassis when typing. It hurts. I have never known anything like it! It is truly ridiculous.

After a few months the screen developed a white splotch near the centre about half the size of a 1p piece. A similar splotch has appeared more recently, on the left side.

The speakers are the worst sound I have ever heard from any computer ever. No exaggeration. An old generation smart phone sounds better. The only thing you could use the speakers for is very non-critical, casual voice, like if someone posts a youtube link of some random moron talking that you just want to click on quickly, then fine, the speakers will do. But any significant content that you actually want to spend more than 30 seconds consuming, forget it. I would rather not see a movie than have to use these speakers with it. You are probably thinking "thats OK, I use headphones" and thats fine. But unless you literally have your headphones permanently connected and intend to never ever use the speakers for anything, then you will notice it for sure.

I suspect the trackpad is crap, but I have not ever bothered to install the software and tweak it so I cant say for sure. The buttons are certainly crap.

Even though it is a custom build, when I bought you could not make it HDD free. So any of you who have picked up an 840 Evo deal, you are going to have to buy a 250GB 5400rpm HDD with you custom build.

The laptop will take two weeks to get to you. Credit to PCSpecialist, they are totally open and up front about that. The current lead times are on their site. And that would be fine if you are getting a special deal. But IMO you arent so there is no need to wait two weeks when amazon will get it to you in two days for free, and take it away again if you dont like it.

I have had one Clevo before. A few years ago I bought what was at the time a top end laptop via the Sager brand. Being top end, the build quality was better of course, but I was still underwhelmed by my experience. The same weak spots were present although not to the same extent of course. The screen wasnt the greatest, and the sound was very poor and there were some other minor niggles. It amazes me that this make has some sort of cult status on the internet. Like its a secret that only the enthusiasts know about. (At least thats how it was when I bought the Sager badged version.) Its moronic. I will not buy Clevo again ever.

And I wont use PCSpecialist again, firstly because it looks like all their builds are Clevo. But also, simply because I dont see any point in using them. The whole point is it should be better value for money. But it is not. And it takes two weeks to receive. They seem fine as a company but IMO the service they are offering is basically irrelevant because they have failed in what IMO would be their mission. Its not like they are filling a gap in the market or anything IMO.

Banned

Pc specialists/clevo laptops are immense easy to upgrade and best bang for buck spec wise by miles would rather have these over alienware anyday build quality is hard brushed textured plastic and is fine better than a lot of branded ones I've never had a bad experience with them speakers aren't brill but all lappy speakers are rubbish Imo the hd panels are the nicest I've ever seen in any laptop bar mac they have dead pixel replace guarantee not sure why some are hating on these just unlucky with their purchase maybe

Ive had one for 6 months or so, a W350ST with i7 and 765m.

Its been a great performer for the money, very good gaming for a cheap laptop (for this price point). Ive had zero issues at all, its been faultless.. however:

1. Materials can feel a bit cheap compared to some although nothing has broken it has a little flex
2. Speakers are awful

To be honest, that's about it that I don't really like about it. For the monies, its been very good. I sold an alienware to get it and it was a good move.

Speakers being awful is an understatement.
They are really really really awful, while there is a onkyo label on it....
Also the touchpad is a little dodgy.
Screen, keyboard with backlit are the big plusses, they both easily compensate the speakers and touchpad.

Was speaking about the w230st btw.

I'm primarily looking to upgrade from my Vaio as the option of a quad core i7 will be good for the amount of video editing I do, but I think I'll wait to see if the GPU options change.

Thanks for all the posts about PCS, both positive and negative. Very helpful.

PC specialist produce some impressive powerful laptops for the money the screens are top notch. I think people are being picky about the casings I have never had one break or crack or paint rub off like dells or HP never had a single fault with these PC's every time I'm mulling a new computer I always end up back on their site these blow the glossy silvery painted named brand rubbish out of the water with hardware, upgradabilty, performance and driver compatibility.

I was actually going to buy this the other day when they advertised the 850m as GDDR5, but then I found out it was DDR3 and decided against it.

Apparently OEM laptop manufacturers can choose the VRAM they use on their mobile GPUs and Clevo decided to use cheap VRAM instead.

A post on the PCS forums suggests a refresh 'late May' should see the 860m available as an option on this range of laptops (or the equivalent if they use a different chassis.)

*edit* I've since spoken to them via live chat and they say this isn't the case - there will be no 860m or better card available on this laptop.

Because the price is different and it's not the same spec as originally posted. So in essence it's a new deal awaiting to be posted. Nothing wrong with a post expiring but it either needs to be updated or a new one made entirely.
