What a load of rubbish..
Much prefer 8 to 7. It's safer, faster and easy if you can be bothered to learn.
Windows 8.1 Update 1 - makes it easier for non touch screen users. Next test will be on my dad who hates 8 with a passion!!!!
I own both windows 7 and windows 8.1. Windows 8 boots faster and has a lot of housekeeping software that is sorely missing from windows 7. Windows 8 has also better networking and file copying functions. Metro is just a real big start menu, there are apps out there to make your own shortcuts. You really need a windows 8 keyboard to use it quickly with some good keyboard skills.
Actually Windows 8.1 Update 1 makes ONLY little improvements with no significant improvements at all really... mostly the fixes are to do with the tiles and metro style apps, skydrive and syncing, in fact I regret updating to Windows 8.1 Update 1 from Windows 8.1 Original... Why? Well first of all Microsoft have embedded more fixes so they can track your surfing and activity, even explorer.exe constantly demands outbound internet access now to Microsoft Servers and if you disable it the tiles stop working all-together, also they have embedded more SkyDrive coding which I and I am sure many other advanced users DO NOT WANT.... and if you install Windows 8.1 Update 1 from Scratch or use the Store Upgrade Feature, you are FORCED to use a Microsoft Account to Sign In... but developers have found a way around that, but many people have discovered this the hard-way which is if you leave your Ethernet cable in or Internet Connection on when upgrading or installing Update 1, you are FORCED to sign into a Microsoft Account, the only way to solve this is to start again and unplug any internet connection so you can use a LOCAL ACCOUNT on your PC. All Windows 8.1 Update 1 does in all honesty is force people to use a Microsoft Account, Use Skydrive and Sync there PCs to Microsoft Servers and fix the start menu (which even which even with Update 1) is still as much use as a chocolate fireguard in comparison to the original start menu we all knew and loved. You WILL NOT NOTICE any speed improvements if that is what you seek, in-fact you will found it will become even slower, especially if you are using a older-style PC. However Windows 8.1 Original is pretty fantastic to be fair, I myself noticed a decent speed increase, in comparison with Windows 8... I think much of this is to do with the new and improved WARP ENGINE Microsoft have embedded into Windows, much better power management to.. however I think you will ONLY notice the benefits of this engine with a decent 3rd-4th gen Intel Processor, I do not think the WARP ENGINE works effectively with AMD chips but I may be wrong on this... but whatever you have you do need a decent PC that is less than 3 years old ideally or you wont notice any difference, in-fact it will likely be slower...
