THIS is a 3.5" drive but really in a Small Package no knowledge about power outlet will try and find more info

it says 3.5" but looks more like 2.5" ... worth the risk?

Quick Google of 'CnM Core 750GB' finds lots of 3.5" for sale with similar spec descriptions.

Maybe not spec is also here : whsmithentertainment.co.uk/com…tml

Although it is identical wording

My Core 2.5" drive is 12cm x 8cm x 1.5cm (only 80gb though)
Edited by: "ZeBadger" 2nd Apr 2011

It's over half a kg, has to be 3.5!

Power plug needed or USB powered anyone know? Thanks

3cm is quite chunky .. so I think it is 3.5", so not cheap compared to other drives

Since when have ebay stock pictures accurately represented the item you are sent?

Yep the 2nd picture looks like 2.5"- you'd be hard pressed to hold a 400g drive so elegantly between thumb and forefinger.

The WHSmith's link is the same, 600g, 3.5" drive.

On the plus side 3.5" are less of a squeeze and less likely to break. Downside, CnM 12 month only warranty.

Any one know if CnM use a reputable hdd manufacturer?

Thanks rottenrobbie

this will almost certainly need a power supply

all being well.

I beleive it harks back to when you needed to install drivers, plug it in, then reboot.

I think it's open to artistic license because no one should have to reboot for new hardware with a modern OS. Will you need drivers? Depends which is newer, the drive or your computer's Windows updates.

I will eBay the question thanks all

newer, the drive or your

I meant to say the drive's interface, subtle difference.

It says it 3.5", it says it's dimensions are 19 x 3 x 12 cm and it says weighs over 600g.
My 500Gb 2.5" external drive is 14 x 1.5 x 8 cm and it weighs less than 200g so if anyone orders this thinking they are getting a 2.5" USB powered drive I think they will be very disappointed.

I got a bit excited when I got the mailshot this morning as it looked like a 2.5" drive but description on the site brought me back down to earth.

I've ordered one, if its not USB powered, then it gets returned, simple as !!

So what , i ordered one, they are going to send 3.5 usb disks without PS unit ??

That would be the first time , if there was none it should have been mentioned ...

If 2.5" - great price. Otherwise nothing to write home about. Pictures on ebay are misleading though, make it look very small, but the description clearly looks like a 3.5" drive - and so does the price if we are realistic. Also, I don't think I have ever seen a 750gb 2.5" HDD? I know of 640 and 1TB but something inbetween?

Found the 640GB version at Maplins. The picture they are using is more than likely the version Zavvi are selling,

http://images.maplin.co.uk/full/A22KL.jpg

although their blurb does state "Available in both portable and external versions – with USB2 or high-speed USB3" so it looks like Zavvi have used a picture of the 2.5" version as seen here at ebuyer

FFS. If it's a 3.5" HDD then it's going to require more power than can be supplied via USB, therefore it will mean a power brick is needed. If it's 2.5" then 5v USB power will suffice. The picture shows the 2.5" portable version, the text and dimensions refer to the 3.5" desktop version.

Guess which version they are selling.... Yes the one they refer to in print.

I was (rightly) holding the images they use (nothing other than mini-USB type slot at back) as a description.

Ebay-messaged them requesting more info and info on how to cancel order if their description was not accurate.

Check this out, maybe try reading what it says an then posting your comments.

For those that can't read I will take out some of the text that is shows in that Maplin 750gb core external desktop usb 2.0 hard drive same as the one on eBay.

and that in English means you get a

USB cable

to transfer data, and you get a

adapter included

(referring to as a power adapter) for which will be the power source.

Hope this has helped those that can't read basic English an make understanding from it.

Maplin != eBay

Anyone know if this can be reformatted pls? I bought one, it is small (just larger than an old audio cassette), but I can't use it like I do a USB stick between Mac and PC. I can add files using a PC, but then cannot write anything when plugged into my Mac.

Its possible you might need to format it but keep in mind that you could loose the abilities of this

unless of course this is already provided with the setup disc, in which case it should be fine.

I'm thinking about a USB HDD but need some advice.
It looks like I need a USB powered one to work with a DVD player with a USB slot, so 2.5" would seem to be a requirement.
Is it possible to partition one with both NTFS & FAT32 partitions?

I think the DVD player needs FAT32, but NTFS might be needed for other things.

Juust wondered if I can have both, and how it might work.

Yes you can get both NTFS an FAT32 running on 1 HDD as 2 partitions and i know this for a fact as I myself have this done.

running windows (i say windows as i am running this an don't know much about Mac)
Start off by formatting the drive into two FAT32 partitions an once complete, then go into "My Computer" an then "Right Click" one of the drives an select "Format", once the window appears select "File system", you will see some options select the option "NTFS" (for the drive you want formatted as an NTSF) an then click the "Start" button, once completed you will have 1 NTFS partition an 1 FAT32 partition.

There maybe an easier way but the way i have shown above is what i found easier for me

It's a 3.5" drive, not a 2.5" drive.

It needs 2 cables, 1 to connect to the USB port and one to supply power to the unit. Some of the comments earlier in this thread just beggar belief ..........

Thanks for clearing

It needing a power cable is based on the assumption that the one being sold on Zavvi's eBay outlet is the same as the Maplin version.

And there is no evidence to suggest that.

3.5" USB powered drives do exist.
