Cheap as chips but steel conductor so would recommend the PF100 for problematic installs/weak signal areas.

I need to make a new aerial socket, and want to take it from an existing socket upstairs. How should I split the cable? Can I just attach a new cable to the back of the existing socket or should I use something else?

Just link through in parallel if there's room?, push the two central conductors in the socket and the two wire around s on the clamp. There will be a small signal drop but if a good signal should be ok especially with digital more forgiving than analogue.

Search Aerial Splitters for alternative options, I got one yesterday and Screwfix were the cheapest and best I could find.

Probably the neatest solution but it really does depend on your scenario. Is your existing aerial loft or externally mounted as you could split at source and then run your Coaxial to the new point from there.

Don't forget your plugs either:
