Just noticed them today when I was in Sainsburys Edgware store.

These are the standard 330ml Cans, which had been produced for the Jewish festival of Passover and can be found in the Ethnic section

Taken from Wikipedia:

Kosher Coca Cola, produced for Passover, is the closest formula to the original that can be purchased. It is sold in 2-liter bottles with a yellow cap marked with an OU-P, indicating that the Orthodox Jewish Union certifies the soda as Kosher for Passover, or with a white cap with a CRC-P indicating that the certification is provided by the Chicago Rabbinical Council. While the usual Coca-Cola formula is kosher, during Passover Ashkenazic Jews do not consume Kitniyot, which prevents them from consuming high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Even sugar-based formulas would still require certification of both the formula and the specific bottling plant, as the strictures of Kashrut on Passover are far higher and more complicated than usual kosher observance. This variety is also consumed by some who view sugar-based cola as tasting better and more natural than HFCS-based soda

Yes

en.wikipedia.org/wik…ver

Just out of interest, from the web:

1. Passover starts on April 9 this year, and usually a couple weeks leading up to the Jewish holiday, we start seeing Passover Coke.

2. All year long, corn syrup is kosher per se, except during Passover when Jews avoid most grains (e.g corn). That means sodas are naturally kosher the rest of the year, but during the holiday, kosher needs to involve real sugar, not corn syrup.

3. Major soda brands that usually roll out special "Kosher for Passover" lines include Coke.

I guess they are selling off the "real sugar" stock. Not surprising to see this listed as available in the Edgeware store as there is a large Jewish population in that area.

L'chaim!

tbh, the regular coke tastes exactly like the real thing, however the Diet coke is not as good

1) Passover actually started on the 30th March and lasts 8 days. Easter always coincides with it, as a Christians say that Jesus's last supper was actually the night of Passover.

Not being Jewish myself I just take the web info as gospel (bad word to use!?!) but obviously I didn't double check this time.

Oh yes, it's here and its pretty much everywhere now, except its cunningly called Fructose-Glucose Syrup (or glucose-fructose syrup) instead of high fructose corn syrup like in the US.

Jews do like a good deal; especially at passover

oh right that makes sense, Ive seen g-f syrup in loads of things.

BTW Coke and the Nazis were very comfortable bedfellows during the Third Reich era- are you people sure this is acceptable for Passover?

Hahahaha

Vodka is Kosher for passover as its not from a wheat based source.

Look out for the Rakuzen's Matza. Last year they started clearing them out for 20p a box!

Really? So that's why I don't like the taste any more, I thought I had just grown out of it.

Actually, I think you will find that most Vodka IS made from grains and therefore not acceptable during passover.

From Wiki:
Vodka, one of the world's most popular liquors, is composed solely of water and ethanol with possible traces of impurities and flavorings. Vodka is made from any one of these fermented substances: grain, rye, wheat, potatoes, grapes, or sugar beet molasses.

Therefore only potato derived vodka would be Kosher for passover....

But anyway I think this Vodka discussion has gone on a slight tangent from Coke!

gotta say that most of the passover coke is pretty flavour-less in comparison to regular stuff

I suppose it depends what you are used to. If you are a bit older and are used to the original coke made with real sugar, then this stuff is more 'authentic'. If you are used to how it is now with corn syrup, then it would seem like the reverse.

I always see Coke with Sugar on the can so what is exactly the issue otherwise since its not Corn Syrup for sweetening?

Just wondering

I think you'll find that before April 8th these would have been as dear or dearer than regular non-Passover coke - it actually costs a lot to be Jewish!!!

BenjiMoodie;8354433

None in Finchley Road (but lots of Matzo Meal).

Your more than likely to be seeing these in stores in the following area's in London ...... Golders Green/Colindale/Edgware/Stanmore/Hendon/Finchley/Stamford Hill

indeed, irony at its best, though kosher tango would be pushing it; maybe they're not that crass.

G-F seemingly (BBC radio 5 Live) fools the brain etc. into thinking you are hungry - that moreish feeling. Poison - yes.

Long live diversity - especially in Palestine and Israel.

Yeah but it isnt in normal Coke in the UK - the ingredients say "sugar". If it's glucose-fructose syrup it has to say so.

Coke in the USA tastes horrible because of the corn syrup.

In the European Union (EU), HFCS, known as isoglucose or glucose-fructose syrup:, is subject to a production quota. In 2005, this quota was set at 303,000 tons; in comparison, the EU produced an average of 18.6 million tons of sugar annually between 1999 and 2001.[36] Therefore, wide scale replacement of sugar has not occurred in the EU.

So what this passover Coke is I really don't know. Maybe it's an american thing?

Are you sure you're not confusing it with MSG?

When the US gets "Kosher" Coke I believe they use cane sugar, while the European coke uses a different type of sugar. So maybe this is cane sugar coke?

I remember reading about this a while ago but can't really remember the facts.

If cost does become an issue then I'd recommend becoming a Muslim, you would save money on the food bills during Ramadan and you would also save on the cost of multiple gifts over the Hanukkah period...may be worth some thought if you're serious about saving money.

49p a can in Kempston Sainsburys so bought a box of 10 for £3 instead.
