Saw this on offer when I did a shop in Aldi last night.

"Coconut oil is believed to have lots of exciting health benefits, ideal for both culinary and cosmetic use."

Bargain when compared to other brands! These seem to be around £5 elsewhere!

i used this product earlier, its really an awesome product with good price and quality also.

Anyone used this for deep frying? Does it have any taste?

yes, coconut

Aside from any health benefits, this stuff is great for frying with, doesn't smoke like veg or olive oil

I use this product all the time for cooking chicken.

I despise the taste, smell and texture of coconut, but this doesn't give any flavour to food at all, and has a much higher smoking point than usual oils, therefore it doesn't break down in your system as much so is "healthier".

And you only need a half a teaspoon for a few chicken breasts, for example, so it will last a while.

I believe it's 300ml but I will check when I get in. It's a fairly big jar!

And the women in my house use it for cleansing...taking make-up off too.

I stick it in coffee for little shot of good-fats and when doing this, on the train, a woman said she put it in the Dogs food to keep their coat shiny for shows etc. Heaps of uses.
Its good stuff for sure.

You're joking right? As an avid fan of HUKD I can tell you now that no one will go to that level of research for a product. As I pictured above, this product is merely the next snake oil in a long list of snake oils. For those not up to speed on what that means it's basically a product that pertains to add something (in this case health benefits) when in reality it is no better than the norm (i.e veg oil etc).

There is no justification for adding it to the diet on top of the usual consumption of other fats. There is no credible evidence to support any of the many health benefits claimed for using it as a supplement.

Searching for any journal article on it in any medical journal gives 0 results for coconut oil + Alzheimer research etc.

Add to that "it's 300ml so good value" - yeah, so is 1 litre of veg oil for £1.20! There is absolutely no scientific evidence to promote this product, only fabricated user tests by suppliers of said product. But still, with all that said, the masses will flock to buy this, as they will the next snake oil out, and the next, and the next.

Not as good as Cold Pressed Latinum.

There was a program on channel 4 that attempted to find out some answers. Not perfect evidence, but at least some effort is put in the research and test.
Food Unwrapped - Series 8 Episode 5

The stand out surprise information comes around the 17 minute mark, proclaiming that the pressed unrefined coconut oil is more suited to cooking with (especially at high temperatures).
That goes against all that health bloggers say (and what I've been doing sometimes). Claiming a low smoke-point for the 100% raw pressed. oO

Friend of my friend told me once this one (cold pressed, raw) makes safe and effective lubricant.

It has to be flat. Otherwise I am sure we would fall over a lot. To the OP this deal is slick.

This is completely meaningless. Believed by whom?

Anyone any proof of any other oils that are better for you to cook with? didnt think so

Rapeseed oil - less saturated fat and doesn't smoke at high temperatures. It can also be drizzled over salads etc. Great substitute for olive oil and coconut oil in my opinion.

Rapeseed and coconut oil ok for frying at high temp ( as well as butter , ghee, goosefat) as they release far fewer toxins compared to sunflower/ veg/ soya oils . Use lard it's cheaper

Light olive oil has a higher smoking point. One of the reasons that they say not to cook with virgin olive oil at high temperatures is that it destroys the polyphenols, which is kind of the point of buying it. Light virgin doesn't have them.

Google 'smoking point oils' and you'll find tables of oil smoking points so you can see there are plenty of higher temperature ones.

As with all things this is going to be fine to use in moderation but don't for one second believe any of the health claims. It's over 90% saturated long-chain fats, the bad fats. The stuff that's healthy in it is so tiny that it's like saying my doner kebab and chips is healthy because I had a slice of tomato on it. Lard has a third of the saturated fat of coconut oil.

Professor Clare Collins talks about coconut oil here - go to 36:40, but for more info on fats start at 32:50. The whole podcast is great.

Somebody speaking sense for once!

I bought it from Aldi a month or so ago but noticed afterwards it was even cheaper in B&M ! Think it was 1.99.

Woaaah, saturated fat content (the bad kind = heart disease)

sunflower oil 10%
olive oil 13%
butter 51%
coconut oil 86%

Even lard is better than this stuff oO

please do your own research into saturated fat and then make your own judgement don't just follow the crowd

But saturated fat is no longer bad for you either....
