Cold weather payment (£25 for every 7 consecutive days of extreme cold) - only applicable to eligible homes

I wasn't aware of this - with temperatures set to plunge, hopefully this helps others that might not know. Apparently this should be paid automatically, not sure how reliable that claim is

You’ll get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March.

You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below for 7 consecutive days.

After each period of very cold weather in your area, you should get a payment within 14 working days. It’s paid into the same bank or building society account as your benefit payments.

You may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit

I think that this should apply to everyone NOT just people receiving certain benefits

Yes this is helpful but it's also pointless in a way as you only get payed after the cold weather and by then it's warmed up and if people don't have the extra money to buy energy when it's cold then this is not helpful at the time. Check your postcode on the gov website to see if your areas affected.
Have to be on benefits to get more benefits! What a joke!!

It’s paid into the same bank or building society account as normal benefit payments, so I guess you'll just need to keep an eye out for the credit to come through.

Surely you use the heating or fire when it’s cold and within 14 days you get the payment, and so you get the payment before your gas bill is due?

If you are on a prepayment meter then you pay before you get the gas.
i agree you get it way too late (up to a month later) its too much for a week and should be paid directly to electric/gas (the warm home discount is) or prepaid card so people can use it for what its meant for.

I am sure the millionaires or fairly wealthy will need the extra £25 payment.

It is hard to get a perfect system because those that really need the extra payment may be right on the borderline for getting certain benefits, but can't get the payment because they don't actually receive any benefits.
No system is going to be fair to everyone and is always going to be abused by someone everything always is.its a good idea in theory and even if it only helps out a few in need then in my eyes it’s my tax money well spent.
It does work. The MET office report it back to DWP and that is how the decision is made. I was surprised when I checked my account one day to find balance slightly higher than expected. Was a real help. Living in an all electric apartment which isnt the easiest to heat knocked that little bit more off the bill. Thankfully moving shortly to a much smaller place with gas central heating again!
since they changed the different stations that record for different areas a few years ago, safe to say the gov hardly pay any out as its always warmer where they record than where you live.

I'm not wealthy but could definitely do with the extra payment but I am not entitle to it, the same as many on here I would think
I would qualify for this benefit but just to let you know that the last time I received the £25 Cold Weather Payment was in February 2013!
Same old story....only if you receive benefits
Just like you can get a free boiler if you receive benefits
Just had to fork out £3000 to replace my broken down oil boiler
Makes you wonder sometimes....

how do people on benefits get a free boiler?
Pointless post, as this is automatic there is no need or way to claim it.

People who work also get WORKING Tax credits... isnt that benefit ? Child Tax Credits ( applies to both ) ...
My wife and I are fortunate enough to work and not receive benefits. Oh hang we get child allowance for our 2. That’s a benefit. But I do not begrudge not receiving cold weather allowance whilst other do. I like to think how lucky I am that we both have work and are able to pay. If we are even in the position that we rely on some state help then I would like to think that others would not have a problem with us then needing extra when needed. There really are some shallow and selfish people that feel the need to post on these kind of posts

Thank you, this is exactly what I was thinking when I posted this. I'm not eligible, but for those that are I hope they get the help they need and are entitled to.

What?
How big a house do benefit claimers have, if it costs an extra £3.57 a day to heat?
thomasleep24 m ago

If it ever existed........

It did. For several years. Many companies thrived from it. The "offer" now comes and goes.
Country is becoming bankrupt....used to be about 20 million working supporting a million on benefits...now the gap is closing....NHS cannot remain free, its a massive service compared to what we had 30 years ago. Unemployed now have luxury TVs and latest phones...worlds gone mad...game over.
Very informative! Thanks for sharing!

Do you have any evidence of this other than your say so?

So not exclusively for those on benefits to gain from as landlords end up with a new boiler, which was the point somebody else was trying to make.

"Unemployed now have luxury TVs and latest phones...worlds gone mad...game over". Thats a sweeping generalisation. I can assure you those at food banks and sitting with blankets and multiple layers of clothes to keep warm not able to keep the heat on arent sitting with luxury TVs and latest phones..

Mostly a scam. My Father was quoted over £4000 for a replacement boiler under this scheme, and that was allowing for a large "grant/discount". The actual cost of the same boiler installed by a local company was £740 with no grant.

Very, very few people ever got or will get a free boiler under this scheme.

not all unemployed have luxury TV's and phones. Programmes like benefit street are wrong on so many levels, yes there is people who abuse the system you will always get that but the majority do not. Iv known disabled people lose money due to being `fit for work` when they cannot move out of bed for constant pain. Help is not there as it is for the disabled never mind cutting what they do have.

" I would like to think that others would not have a problem with us then needing extra when needed."

I'm not sure they would. If say you were made redundant and needed help getting back on your feet, people would be fine.

It's people who have no intention of getting off benefits and could if they could be bothered. As an example they get forced to go for a job interview and they turn up late wearing a tracksuit with a non caring attitude.

The magic word in all this is "needed". If you needed it nobody will have an issue.

Sweeping generalisations there . This country cannot go bankrupt we have the Bank of England that can print money if needed. The NHS can be free if they scrapped trident and hs2 and reviewed the contracts on the new nuclear power stations which will not be consumer friendly.
In case you hadn’t noticed you need a smart phone to register for linking with employment sites, dwp its a necessity. I suggest you find out the way people are treated in claiming unemployment benefits its soul destroying and dehumanising.
