Waiting for this deal to be panned and go sub-zero now, as I just ordered one and £323.10 is a lot of money for me :-( lol. Note it currently says an order takes up to 2 weeks.

Down points on this are N270 (rather than slightly faster n280), battery life has been tested to be 5 hours 30 mins by a review which is not quite so good as the 9 hours or so of the higher spec Asus 1005ha. Only Windows XP but I have my Tesco win 7 pre-order disc sat doing nothing and I suspect when they are released with 7 the price will go up. No "N" wifi, but do you really need faster than "G"! Silly combined headphone/microphone jack.

Benefits are internal 3g, 11.6" 1366x768 screen (higher res than most netbooks), bluetooth, 1gb soldered and free dimm slot means 3gb max (HP misreport as 1gb max but widely discussed on the net that you can add a 2gb stick) and Ion LE graphics which are able to output 1080p with the HDMI port. Ion LE graphics apparently are just the Ion crippled by the drivers to appease Microsoft's XP license regulations (link to follow).

Price is £359, discounted to £323.10 when you enter the code HPQUIDCO at checkout.

Also don't forget to go through quidco or topcashback (thanks to pet2000) for 8% cashback. £297.25 AFTER cashback!

If it had Windows 7 installed I would have considered ordering one as I really want my next netbook to have a hdmi out & 3g.
Seems like a good deal, voted hot, but not what I'm looking for.

Many netbooks will come with Windows 7 starter which has a silly limitation that you cannot change the desktop wallpaper and you don't get the fancy Windows 7 Aero interface (but an upgrade to home premium is offered at a price - not sure what that is yet). I have read some netbooks (including this model) will be released with home premium and 2 or 3gb (this is because the licensing conditions for starter limit the machine to 1gb.)

Has no internal 3g! (That's the 311c-1010SA and this is the 311c-1030SA). An extra £8.10 to not have to have a dongle sticking out the USB port  Also don't forget 8% quidco is £25.85 (remember to allow for their yearly fee if you don't use quidco which I think is £5). My Quidco hasn't tracked yet, will give it some more time, not sure what to do if it doesn't.

Note that the first link in the second post shows the same one as @ overclockers cheaper

Price is £359. Topcashback also pays 8% and has no fee (Quidco is £5) (Quidco should not be included in quoted price).

All correct, it'll also come with an option to upgrade the hard drive to 250gb or 320gb and the windows 7 version will have full ion graphics so well worth waiting a while

See link myhpmini.com/for…571 This *has* full Ion graphics All you have to do is add a few characters to an INF file ;-) Nvidia just crippled the drivers to please Microsoft for the XP license it would seem prior to Windows 7.

As the hard drive is easily accessible I figured I could take the 320gb hard disc out of my Tesco Iomega 320gb hard disc and slot that in.

difference between this and the samsung n510?

Surreal - I went from voting cold to placing an order! I have a couple of mobile broadband dongles already (and hardly use them) so I've gone for the model without the 3G slot. Original price is £329 but 10% code brings it down to £296.10. Assuming Quidco pays out at 8%, then that's a further £23.69 off. So the final price should come in at £272.41

That's a fab deal - perhaps you should put that into the opening thread anewman (for those that don't need the mobile internet.)

And I voted it cold... plonker

Don't like the idea of waiting two weeks for delivery, but I guess if something else comes up, it'll be easy enough to cancel the order. Can't go wrong really.

The n510 was £380 @ CPW with XP but has mysteriously vanished (preparing for windows 7 model?!). Didn't think the extra £80 was worth it though as the only differences I could tell were nearly an extra hour battery life (based on review at pcpro.co.uk) and the n280 processor which is 60mhz faster (1.6ghz versus 1.66 ghz) and an extra 134mhz system bus speed (533mhz versus 667mhz). I guess the Samsung brand is perceived as being better than Compaq though so resale value later will be better. HP sells the netbooks under the Compaq brand in Europe. I guess the strategy is to keep the "crap" brand for the netbooks so HP sell more of the better laptops?! Compaq is 1.46kg (28.9x20.4x (thickness 1.98 front 3.06 rear) cm), Samsung 1.41kg (28.9 x 20.0 x 3.1cm).

In favour of the HP the samsung can only take 2gb DDR2 max I think, this can take 3gb DDR3 max and no need to get rid of the 1gb stick in there - which should hopefully give more memory to the graphics and a bit more boost.

Thats really interesting thanks. I've ordered one now:whistling:

Any idea what 2gb memory I will need to upgrade the ram?

BTW it's £319.99 at Amazon and should be in on 3rd Nov.

Just been looking at this thread myhpmini.com/for…349 which says 2GB, PC3-8500S, DDR3-1066MHz, 204-pins, SODIMM memory module for the N270 model, (n280 only available in US as of now).

I suspect it should. Well I would be complaining to HP/Compaq if it didn't ;-) May need some configuration of some sort, hopefully google will help if it does.

If you're looking for a netbook with the larger than normal screen (12.1"), check out the Samsung NC20 deal
with Amazon (£299.99). Great reviews, and very easily upgradable to 2Gb ram.

The company I work for use HP laptops and they're fine. Much better than the Dell ones where I used to work.

Incidentally when does a netbook become a laptop? My laptop has a 12" screen this 'netbook' 11".

the model without the 3g was previously listed here at the same price. only change is quidco has gone up to 8%. i ordered mine when the quidco went up but decided not to list as it was the same deal and would just attract the quidco flamers.

hotukdeals.com/ite…boo

anyway, things to know about it:

1. Ion / Ion LE makes no difference other than DX10 support. As the GPU is not powerful enough to run DX10 features in games this is a moot point.
2. Hard disk is easy to replace, personally though I reckon this is plenty for a portable machine.
3. N270 vs N280, I bet you can't press the stopwatch fast enough to measure the difference ;-)
4. Extra memory is available pretty cheap from Crucial with quidco, it runs Windows 7 very well without it though.
5. Fan is fairly loud according to reports on OCUK forums and comes on quite often like most full sized laptops. Only mention this because my Dell Mini 9 is silent with SSD and no fans.

Those of you waiting for Windows 7 be careful not to buy one with Windows 7 Starter edition, better of with XP than that. Only model that may be worth waiting for is the ASUS Ion model with the dual core Atom and Windows 7 due later this year, that will probably break the £400 mark though.

Lack of optical drive, price and currently Atom processors are really the defining features. In reality they had to come up with a different name as compact laptops are a premium product with high margins, manufacturers needed to keep that market seperate. These Ion models are really closing the gap.

Because it's the only ION netbook released on US market. They are still waiting for Samsung N510.
I would not get this one because of a stupid choice of High Glossy screen for a netbook.

Hot!

ion graphics are the way forward, the integrated intel graphics couldn't even run a youtube video full screen half the time!

As I previously posted the Ion LE is simply the ion full fat driver crippled. See myhpmini.com/for…571 also on that forum are "pre-cracked drivers". There are some screen shots evidencing an increase in frame rate for DX10 games, but IMHO near 10 fps is unplayable.

Agreed glossy screens are carp, unfortunately lots of netbooks have them and they seem to be on the increase. I wouldn't be surprised if the n510 with windows 7 came with a glossy screen the way things are going :-D Even Asus with the 1005ha, base model had matte, the "improved" longer battery life model had a glossy screen.

Lots of people also say Dell and Acer are crap. I have used a HP laptop before and found it to be reasonably ok. If I had the wonga I wouldn't be looking at netbooks though and would get something remarkably silly like one of the Sony Sub-notebooks costing a few £k.

ion graphics will make zero difference to Flash video like youtube at present because flash is not hardware accelerated. You could have the biggest monster gaming card and it would make no difference because flash and the graphics card don't talk to each other.

Adobe are releasing a version of Flash that does talk to graphics cards in the very near future, but until that comes out Ion is useless on youtube.

HP are not stylish or lightweight.

But I have done enough mobo swap outs and printer rebuilds to know how well made they are.
They are very well documented and never ever cut corners - e.g. touchpads not just screwed into plastic stanchions , external ports fully supported , Power jacks rarely shear internally ( unless user kicks whole thing across room)

I cannot speak about the consumer support lines

All i can say is - If HP were a car it would be Audi/Saab/Volvo , up market stuff.

COCO
