I have literally no need for one of these. My house is flooded with tech both moderately useful and dreadful (I own an Ouya, for example) but I'm finding the idea of owning one of these intensely compelling. This site, this wretched site.
Not sure I see this is as much of a deal with a look around, most of the places I trawl tend to sell refurb laptops as I've little interest in desktops. Might suit someone who just needs everything in one hit and isn't vastly in need of a bargain. There's every chance these Optiplex machines have Merom Core2 chips in them going back as far as 2006 and while they still offer enough power for office/browsing tasks, they are certainly a lot less power efficient when you consider what else you can get. Below is a quick trawl through just one of my usual stores looking for bargains.

gigarefurb.co.uk/del…tml

Newer processor, more hard disk space, obviously it's a laptop rather than a desktop.

gigarefurb.co.uk/hp-…tml

£10 more for 3 generations newer in the processor department and more overall hard disk space.

gigarefurb.co.uk/len…tml

If it was me with a £100 budget for a computer this T420 is at least 3 generations of processor newer, more hard disk space, guarantee of a 900p screen which will be nicer to look at.

If you want a full desktop, I've seen a couple of places with 2nd gen intel core processors for ~£50 with 12month warranty, leaving £30 for a monitor and peripherals which I'd say is easy enough to manage.

Not voting, as if you're IT illiterate then this represents a cheap and easy way to get a full computer without effort. Just for anyone willing to take the time/patience to ask there are plenty of tame IT bods out there who will happily confirm stuff will work together and get you a better overall deal. Like I said, I just picked a single outlet for looking at alternatives, I'm sure I can do better with a bit more time.

Are you me?
Q: Does it work with the oculus Rift?

A: Absolutely not. The only way this would power any VR system is if you buy it, unbox it, give it a name, like ‘Steve’, then throw it away and buy a proper gaming rig for about a grand then call that ‘Steve’ in honour of the original ‘Steve’ then connect it to the VR.

I am giving this heat JUST for some of the stupid questions in the Amazon Q&A for this item.
("Are the keyboard and mouse built in?")

Actually had one of these - it is not clear if this is the SFF or USFF cased version though.

Both are non-standard cases, so difficult to get spares for, especially the PSU, and the USFF suffers from poor ventilation/carp fans.

Worse, in the USFF the fan speeds are BIOS locked to a very small range, so fitting better fans can cause the BIOS to shut the fans down and cook your CPU.

Having said that, they are pretty powerful, and good for general use and casual gaming, and a bargain at this price.

What the hell does that mean ? It is not sold by amazon but a 3rd party. The company is owned by Naveed SOHAIL and appears to have posted no profits via his company in the last few years. This looks very suspect to me it certainly have nothing to do with amazon other than being listed on the site

I’ve brought one of these and they are NOT good for any sort of GAMING let alone light gaming. They’re OK for browsing the internet but even then that’s a stretch, don’t buy this trust me. YouTube is terrible on this pc too. Invest a little more money and get something better.

Better than the usual "don't know I don't own this" that I see way too often.
Spec is easily 8 to 10 years old, not worth it
Let's pause and consider this for a moment ...

An ex-corporate refurb, which has been cleared down, tested and had a new image of windows installed -gaming is probably not it's strongest point (depends on what you're playing - doom and candy crush will be fine!) but for less that four score, what's there to argue about?

Install one of the open-source office suites, Firefox and Thunderbird, and you really won't need need an awful lot more for a basic desktop system - there's plenty of businesses being run on technology just as "modest" as this!

It might be rubbish, but at least it's CHEAP rubbish and I'd sooner settle for a used Dell - even of this vintage - than a new "second tier" entry system designed for the domestic market!

Hot from me

As a package it’s not bad but it’s still comparatively expensive for this age of spec, I’d rather buy one of the Gigarefurb machines or something from ITZoo (who are legit refurbishers). This ‘Amazon Qualified Supplier’ stuff sounds sketchy and is more likely ‘anyone who can sign up for an Amazon seller account’ and I am also doubting it’s legitimate Windows 10 as few companies are Microsoft Authorised Refurbishers and I am sure these guys aren’t. But for £80 it’s a complete machine, it’s just likely over 10 years old so as long as expectations are managed - Windows 10 doesn’t like hardware of this age though, it’s not even that keen on Sandy Bridge hardware which is 2-3 generations newer.
I haven’t seen anything come near to the bargain I grabbed from itzoo.
Simply not worth the money,

Looooooooool, welcome to the awesome World of buying waffle for the sake of it (without even having a clue what to do with any of it ... hehehehe).
It comes with a floppy drive, you could install Windows 95 and relive your youth .... time to dig out those 13 floppy disks!!!!!

What bargain was that?
Don’t do it to yourself. I bet your phone cost more! This will be terrible for practically everything apart from word processing.
Have sourced similar refurbs for work as an RDS client, more than half had dead PSU's within the first 3 months, so factor in a £20 replacement and your time to fit.

Win95 came on 50 floppy disks, I still have an unused set in the garage, waiting for it to become a collectors item.

You might be thinking of Windows for Workgroups 3.1

Same here. But I'm now trying to reuse lot of these as purposeful devices with help of linux

For instance, converted by old PC adding new SSD & creating firewall device using pfsense

Changed as old NUC, with 2nd hand RAM and SSd as Kodi. Gonna stop BBC forever ..

Btw power is free as I got solar. So self sustaining tech options

Wow, I remember installing those 30+ Windows 3.11 floppies at work, praying that one doesn't error.
If this is the SFF, rather than the USFF, there is the possibility that you can fit a £13 Xeon 5540 quad core, a 1/2 height gfx card, and a SSD; this bring it up to 3rd gen i3 performance levels. I have done this with other Core2 Duo systems.

Also, Dell monitors have a very good reputation, and the screen that came with mine is still in daily use.

Maybe not. Perhaps he means people who he considers are 'trash' don't even buy PCs as bad as this. That's simply how bad this is. Just a guess.

this is more than likely a socket 775, not a 1366, so wouldnt work (and if it is a 775 dual core, that the kind of just pc you can get on ebay for £15 with oem key witch long as its windows 7 can be upgraded to windows 10 still for free, just have to google a little to find the right links *tho i fail to see why anyone would 775's are like 15 years old now*, so at £80 with mouse kb monitor and wifi adaptor added, its really not a good deal)

people wouldnt sell off computers on the cheap (besides the odd one here and there that are just having a personal clear out, not bulk selling for profit), if they can be decently upgraded on the cheap, they would do that them sell, and sell them off for £75 - £100 more

and tho i lack all day to put it to in,

heres a much cheaper all in one pc, same specsish 250gb vs 160gb no wifi tho like £2 for the ones they will ship with it, in 5 mins of looking

Xeon 5450 IS a 775 chip, and it does work as I have a 775 board sat in the next room running one. The only real issue with these boards is the lack of 4GB DDR2 RAM modules for less than silly money, yes there are cheap ones out there, but they only run on AMD ironmongery, Intel compatibles are like rocking horse poop.

£80 is on the higher side, but through Amazon you have a better warranty than through Ebay, plus, these ARE business class units, so usually last longer than domestic grade, and should have a legitimate Win license included.

Finally, the screens are very good; no noticeable dimming on mine, despite the age.
Hmmm this seller has a fairly low customer feedback of 373........ how come HUKD mods haven't removed this deal? they used to removed ebayer's with less than 1000+ feedbacks usually and this guy has 373 and looks like he buys or offers to recycle for free ex corporate electronics and sells it out of a small lock up.
Edited by: "spannerzone" 7th Apr
If £80 is your budget and you have no flexibility on that at all then I guess this is OK. You should be able to get any number of business laptops for slightly more that would be much better.
