In 1990 Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about video games and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.

The battle was vicious, relentless and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.

Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader. It's the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.

Heated, absolutely superb book, a gripping read from start to finish for anyone with a interest in gaming. Great to see a videogames related book discounted on Kindle too, as it's a rare occurrence.

Hey what the heck. Bought.

Since I got the £39 Kindle Paperwhite recently, might as well pick up some cheap summer reading material
Cheers for this, OP!
Cheers for this, I had a £1 credit at Amazon, this will do nicely.

Thanks OP, I too had a £1 credit thingy kicking around so cost me nowt.

> IMPLYING THE CONSOLE WARS EVER ENDED

I reckon they did for Nintendo. Other consoles are still in battle v each other, just not Nintendo.

The halcyon-days console war certainly has ended. Not sure what I'd call it these days....

I think that its always been a case of the consoles being in COMPETITION with each other, it was and still is, the users who fuel the war!

Fanboy rages?!?!?

Since when was Sega in competition with Nintendo? Never any contest there.

I had the SNES and the Megadrive, both were really good consoles and Ninty showed that raw power is meaningless without good software to play on it.

Of course it was. Oh wait is that 1992 the year you were born?
That'll be history for you then

Fanboy rages?!?!?

Useful fodder for tv comedy shows?

You're talking about Spectrum vs C64 vs BBC?
Loved it though kind of want a sequel that continues the history but not sure from what viewpoint, this is clever as it used people's stories to move the big story on.

Meh all the poor kids had console the greatest kids had an Amiga with 16.8 million colours, upgradeable RAM, a mouse for more accurate control and a cool floppy diskette drive. Games weren't 50 quid each.
Amiga vs Atari ST was the ultimate conflict
Bought cheers, nice to have a gaming book amongst the numerous titles on my kindle which I never use lol
Finished reading this a few days ago actually, great book. Terrific insight into Sega and Nintendo
Thanks OP
Wow thanks op gonna pick this up for sure. I remember those times pretty well. Still hard to believe Nintendo are still around with the same set of games being resold over the decades and a few gimmicky controllers being enough to keep them afloat. Ah, gone are the good old days for sure.
Sega does what Ninten-don't

I thought the audio book was awful. That guy doing borderline racist impressions of Japanese people made me stop listening to it.

The youth of today! They just think sega is the company that puts sonic in games on a Nintendo! Gone are the days where is was blasphemy to even consider that ever happening!

Purchased. Enjoyed watching The King of Kong and Atari Game Over, so hopefully this be as intresting.
