Cooking bacon - 1kg pack @ £1.62 @ Lidl

This deal has been on this website before, but recently, the packs have contained thick bacon chops - some green (unsmoked), some smoked. I prefer smoked bacon. These are mostly the end cuts which doesn't bother me, or if not the end cut, there is some other deemed appearance defect. Fantastic value compared with buying perfect bacon chops which are usually about £3 or more for 500gms.

Worth a regular look at your local store.

Damn, was after some non-cooking bacon

Thinly sliced is the best for the classic brekky or butty, this would be great for a bacon casserole though....layered bacon, sliced potato and onion in an oven dish and baked.

I am a vegetarian so I guess don't know about these things, but I had assumed that people cooked all bacon?

Awwww damn it I bought some cooked Bacon yesterday too for the same price.

Maybe these are for putting in soup, quiches, omelettes, that sort of thing?

Can see none of you lot are going to be wining Master Chef next year lol

Cooking Bacon = Off cuts etc which go in as ingredients rather than the slices which go on the plate whole with your full English.

Who made that one up - McDonalds?

Cooking bacon - the bacon that we used to get in massive bags when I worked at Wendy's. It doesn't look good until it's burned to a crisp , but it tastes just fine!!

Matt

pretty much always this price
its very variable as different 'types' can be in it
sometimes heavy on the streaky, sometimes just heavy on the fatty
occasionally though its pretty much all 'lean' bacon which is pretty good for either chopping up and cooking in pieces or even for cooking whole in slow cooker etc

The first occasion I had a pack it was superb. Lean and tasty. An absolute bargain.

Another occasion, expecting the same, I got something that was utter rot. It wasn't off or anything. It was just vile. Hard to explain. Except it was just four thick pieces. I couldn't even finish the pack it was that awful. I never waste food either.

If it's such a lottery it then stops being a bargain if you get a 'bad' pack. Has put me off somewhat from buying again.

My advice is to select your pack carefully. Avoid the thick stuff and stick with the thin, scraggy rashers

The last time I looked at bacon in Tesco's I could not believe the prices even value packs seemed a bit steep. So any deals are welcome. I like smoky stuff or normal so don't care if its mixed.

Thanks for posting.

I always get this from Sainsburys and you can get packs almost as good as normal bacon if you know what you're up to and willing to squat next to the boxes and route through them like a zombie picking at some guts (that's me!). If you can't see to the middle of a pack to see if there are the massive thick bits in there then give the packet a squeeze like you're trying to make an o.k. sign and if it gives way easily there aren't any whale steaks in there.
