Re posted as I couldn't edit the original post oO

This deal was found here and is also at PC World for this price which I have just bought from but PC World, Currys and Dixons are all the same company.

This looks pretty good, given that it's around £400 for an HP i3. Some reviews don't sound terribly encouraging however. Voting hot anyway, at least with Currys you shouldn't have a problem with returns.

Just bear in mind the is the DUAL core i7 not the QUAD core version.

hot from me

pretty powerful processor for a good price. shame about couple other things like battery and graphics. but will do most things perfectly i think

great price! Reviews are a little hit and miss... i would be wary buying advent

But today is the first day of Advent so you may get lucky if you order today.

Advent and e-machines are the worst I have ever known. Bad quality components and bad build quality.

Dual Core i7 O_o

Never heard of those before.

Anyone know how they compare to their quad core counterparts?

Have had a couple of advents. never had any problem with them

I doubt you'll see a quad core i7 in many laptops.

The dual core i7 has hyperthreading, so the performance CPU usage history in Windows Task Manager shows 4 seperate processor threads.

Maybe this is causing the confusion....

I'll give this some heat

I had an Advent desktop for 6 years and it was a dream until I decided to buy a new PC which was a Compaq Deskpro with Vista and hate it and wish for my old Advent back!

My daughter has had an Advent laptop with Vista for 3 years and its great

If you aint travelling alot with it, its great for the price sod battery power and if you want decent graphics get a decent high end lappy!

mines got one in

is this better than the standard macbook (2.4ghz one)?

i think these days most people will struggle to notice the difference between a bottom end and top end processor, they are all more than enough for surfing the web and watching videos

And mine.

Dixons automatically gives you 5% (£25) off laptops at checkout at the moment, so it's £474.99 (£10 more expensive there).
You can get it for £464.99 at Currys (using the 35POUND voucher) or PC World (where the code is PC35).
Quidco is 3% for Dixons and Currys, but 3.5% for PC World. So the cheapest way to go would be to get it from PC World through Quidco.

It's faster...

The processor in this is the i7-620M - the i7-6n0M processors are the fastest dual-cores produced and notebookcheck rank it just above the quad core i7-740QM in overall power (on tasks that can't use 5-8 threads it will be significantly faster and faster than even the i7-820QM).

It also consumes less power than the quad cores.

If the name on the front wasn't Advent this would be a scorching deal;

Was the Dell one quad core then? (£496 i7 deal)

How does this compare to the Dell laptop (also had i7) which was recently sold for about £500and now costs about £700?

seems quite good

Were they the xps15/17 deals? If so they are better - as they have fast dedicated graphics.

It’s not much faster than an i5-540M; the top end Intel CPUs are usually over priced.

Err I wouldn't bank on that TBH!

Seems a good price however so Hot.:)

this as a very good i7-620m processor, i have this processor in a dell 1647 studio xps and it's super fast, this is very cheap for the spec, have some heat, if i was looking for a laptop i would buy this

You're right there; it depends on the tests run I guess but it's probably only 5-10% faster than the i5-540M - but the 540 is a relatively high-end i5 that you wouldn't usually find in a £465 laptop.

And yes the top-end processors are over-priced - but we're all drawn to the fastest and not necessarily best...

Intel seem to like confusing the public, releasing dual and quadcore cpus under the i5 and I7 name is a bad idea. I did not even know they had dual core I7s until I read this, could have been an expensive mistake!

Anyone know when this deal expires? or when the voucher code expires?
Can this voucher be used for anything?

u could have the best processor but shared graphics is just one major bottleneck on this system. And advents feel like they are made out of plastacine last I saw one! Ok for normal everyday functions but not suitable for graphics or gaming at all! Anyway u get what you pay for!

That's where sites like 'notebookcheck' come in helpful; as processors come suffixed with M, LM, UM, ULM all having different performance. Intel aren't alone, AMD processors names are confusing with similarly named processors having vastly different performance. Then of course there's graphics card naming...

But regarding this dual core i7 it is actually FASTER than some of the quad core i7s so a cheap fortunate mistake may have been made.

Agree with that; but apart from gaming, as usual, the bottleneck will almost certainly be disk...

Very good list of CPU Benchmarks … Very good list of CPU Benchmarks here:http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

CPU mark is useful, but I find it quite limited, I like guides like notebookcheck as you can dig deeper into their test results.
For instance on the cpu mark chart it's impossible to see how a single threaded process will run on a multi-core machine; in this CPU Mark doesn't reflect the 'real world', simply showing all mobile i7s as significantly faster than all mobile i5s.

Where in notebookcheck does it review cpu's? Can't find anything. Cheers

Advent are a particularly poor brand of laptop, I wouldn't pay anywhere near this i7 or not

probably means this - … probably means this - http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.htmlthey have an equivalent gpu one too-http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
