I went on MSC dubai-muscat-abu dhabi-dubai round trip cruise in winter a few years back. Very enjoyable and good place to see especially via the comfort of a cruise ship. As with the above point though if drinks or tips/service charges aren't included budget for that extra hit.

Highly reccomend dolphin boat trip in khasab / muscat and also fountains at main mall in dubai.

But thats the same with any cruise or holiday come to that. Car parking at airport, cattery / insurance / spening money / day trips. This is just the base cost for the cruise. It's like slamming the price of a hotel offer.

To be honest you do have to budget a bit more for cruises.... we recently took a one week cruise in the Caribbean and the automatic service charge added to the account was about £150 for one week.... and that's without buying one thing on board. Then you also add on your usual holiday costs as you described.
I went on this cruise, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are enjoyable destinations (especially the large Mosque in Abu), other stops are not so great if you don't pay for the tours. I think in Khasab bus left us near a supermarket with absolutely nothing to do or to go to.
Costa? May as well get a ferry. Terrible cruise company. Went with them once last year and never will again.
As much as the cruise companies will have you believe otherwise, service charges are still optional and if you insist you can get them removed.

The staff dont get these as they make up their basic salary so i always tip personally
Yep the above comment is very true. Refuse to pay it as it IS optional. Give the stateroom attendant or bar staff a few dollars in cash if you think they deserved it.
Their is another £119 pound on top of the £149 then flights on top from UK to Dubai and back the £119 is the €8.50 per day charge and the £149 is based on two people one room as the charge is per adult you need to double the €8.50 to €17 a day x 7 is roughly £119

You've managed to convert euros to pounds at a 1:1 exchange rate somewhere along the way there. just saying

Cheese me off things like this - as this is (presumably) compulsory charge why not add it to the front end price ? Same with restaurants etc that say - if you are good enough to bring a crowd into our establishment and presumably as it is a gathering "may" be tempted to drink and eat more you will be charged an additional 12.5% for tables more than 6 ? Why ? Does the cost of soup/steak jump up ? Ditton service charges in restaurants - 12.5% added to bill ? Why ? If it is to go as tips - that is not my problem that they pay staff low - pay them higher, and raise your prices front end and see what custom you get !
Ahh - feel better now for getting that off my chest and its not 8am yet ;-)
Tipping.......

I was made up with the service I received in primark the other day. The cashier looked at me stupidly when I said "take a pound for yourself mate"

You can request that the service charge be removed on most cruise companies. Most places you port in you can wander round yourself, or use local transport, it is just the big star attractions you want to pay for via the ship as it bypasses queuing.

Quite right.. ive done quite a few cruises with different Lines but do remember that the service charge is NOT mandatory despite what they tell you. I always tip, but at the rate I think is reasonable.... Also remember that certain countries require you to have a visa, even if just being there for a few hours.

eh?
I was on this exact cruise at Christmas. It's a few quid chaper on VivaVoyage.
Don't expect the full blown luxury cruise experience. It's cheap and it is what it is.
I did a review on CruiseCritic:
cruisecritic.co.uk/mem…084

In terms of excursions:
Muscat: Walk beyond the taxis at the port to the Souk (Market) -takes about 5 minutes. Find a good english speaking taxi driver. 10 Euros per hour. They take you to all the sights in 4-5 hours. Even to the hot springs in the mountains, the big new ShangriLa resort, the diplomatic area, the Opera House, the beaches as well as the usual stuff that you get on the Costa tour like the Royal Palace, Old fort, etc... On the second day in Muscat we went to the beach near the opera house which has great sand, clear waters and is largely diserted but for a few expats. It's has a Starbucks, Subway etc right beside it. There's even a supermarket that sells IrnBru of all things... Bikinis OK.
Khasab: Forget about the town - Right beside the dock, you can get a Dhow that'll take you to the Fjords, go dolphin watching and even a bit of snorkling. Takes about 5 hours and they serve fruit, saffron tea, arab coffee, bottled water and soft drinks in the basic price. Haggle down to 10-15 Euros - We paid 50 for 4 of us- all-in. It was surprisingly good. Exactly the same tour sold by Costa is EUR79 each.
AbuDhabi: Jump in a taxi and do your own thing. The grand mosque is the must see attraction. Don't believe the Costa hype about dressing appropriate. The mosque will lend you the right clothing. Other things are Ferrari World, the various malls, YazWaterWorld, the MotorCircuit, the Marina etc. Taxis are cheap at £12 to the Mosque from the port.
Dubai: Again, Jump in a taxi and do your own thing. If you plan to go to the Burj-Khalifa, book online before you leave. They fleece tourists who just turn up. Sunset and Dawn are the best times. Same book online advice applies to Atlantis WaterWorld. Taxis charge 20AED to pick up at the Port plus the usual metered fare. It's 90AED to the Airport and about the same to Atlantis Palm Waterworld. Dubai Mall is 40AED (10AED is £1.80)

One last tip: You sometimes get a better flight deal by flying into AbuDhabi and out of Dubai, especially if you book with AF/KLM. In most cases, the flight will be on Etihad which give a free 1 hour bus trip to Dubai. We only paid £296 over Christmas
Great tips wavecrest, well done on bargaining so hard.

Went on this cruise a few days before your post and missed the tips on Muscat, ended up paying more for a taxi.

Overall we enjoyed the cruise, stayed a few extra days in Dubai and used the metro to get around everywhere.
