Cotes Du Rhone for £3.79 at Lidl

Found 1st Mar 2014
A mate at work (French) suggested this wine.
Searched online and at other major retailers but over £6.
Spotted at Lidl for £3.79!
And two bottles for me.
Thought of sharing with wine lovers at HUKD.
Cold votes welcome with explanation.
Thank you in advance for the heat from the value lovers, not brand crazies!

This website allows cold votes without the need for an explanation. Good deal though so heat from me

Is this a price reduction or the normal price? Thanks.

This is normal price, we've been drinking it for a long time now since it was £3.59 can't fault it it's nicer than a lot of the more expensive stuff out there.
Now you've told everyone it'll probably sell out or they'll up the price :-)
If you like red wine give it a go!

£3.33 a bottle if you buy 11 bottles and combine with the £5 off £40 spend in some newspapers.

Sorry, if I caused any inconvenience!:(

We've been buying wine from the same region as this for some time now and as a rule they have all been nice wines however I've always paid over £5 so heat added from me!! Thanks :-)

Don't think your being rude but nobody needs to do anything other than vote cold, they don't need to add a comment or point to a better deal. No problem for the heat, its a good deal

Just bought very similar looking Cotes du Rhone in Aldi for the same price

Good price!
What dishes would it compliment?

Good deal. I find it a bit harsh, perfect for cooking though.

The link does not take it to the wine in the picture, did your mate recommend Cotes Du Rhone in general or a particular one?

great wine for the price. i take advantage of eurotunnel offers and buy this same wine in Lidl, Calais for 1 euro 69. or a 3 litre box of it for 6 euro 79.

oh...now that is a good price.

LIDL have a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon for £3.99. Nothing much there, you might think .....

Except this was given 5 stars in a wine review in PORTUGAL. Like most wine producing countries, the Portuguese consider their wines to be the best - so for a foreign wine to get a review like this it has to be something special ....... and it's £3.99, so cheaper than most of the tat sold in the big supermarkets.

I buy it as an everyday wine - try it and you may be pleasantly surprised.

I was just going to ask the same question.

On a personal level, I'd have it with red meats. It'd go well with steak or lamb. Make sure it's a room temperature too ;-)

EDIT: The wine, not the meat!

Yeah if you are lucky enough to live near Dover, nip across on a cheap day trip and fill the boot.
This is a great wine. Easy to drink, not too heavy or too dry. There are also some other villages (different color label), a few cents more expensive. I like the light blue one but don't know why its different. Around 2 euros - WTF

red meat is also best at room temperature prior to cooking

It might be of interest to other red wine drinkers that the Berberana Rioja Crianza 2009 is £4 a bottle in Asda at the moment. It's certainly a nice bottle for that money. And the Gallo White Zinfandel is also still £4.

Cotes du Rhone is the name of a wine from a particular region of France. It’s a big region and there are good wines and bad wines and high-priced and low-priced wines. Good wines are not necessarily the expensive ones and cheap wines are not necessarily bad.

That said, at £3.79, VAT and duty swallow up £2.64, leaving £1.15 to cover packaging, distribution, the retailer profit… and the actual wine. When there is so little available to cover the wine itself, corners are cut and effort goes into maximising volume rather than quality.

This is not being wine-snobby. There is a reason why good wines are more expensive than bad wines. At the top end of wine-making, grapes are hand-picked by skilled pickers who know the difference between good (=ripe) and bad (over-or under-ripe) berries. They make sure there there is not too much stalk or leaf gets in. Winemakers focussed on volume love to pick just after a shower because the fruit is plumped up by the rain, so more juice = more wine. Good wine-makers don’t want this it dilutes the flavour.

I’ve not tried the Lidl Cotes Du Rhone. If you like it, then clearly it is a good buy. But in my view, it’s unlikely to be any good.

I've been buying it for weeks at Chandlers Ford near Southampton. I assumed it was nationwide, but I don't know to be sure. Maybe just in store?
I

This is a great bottle for the price, my wife is from Tain Lé Hermitage so knows all about the Cotes Du Rhone wine and this is one of the best.
