2 for £2.50 in morrisons

nice milk

The main reason Cravendale tastes better than "ordinary" milk is the higher sugar content/lower fat content than ordinary milk.

Yep, got two in Morrisons yesterday, works out the same price, you a get a nice long date on it too.

I did wonder! Is this the Sunny D(elight) of the milk world?

Wrong. It is micro-filtered to remove more of the contaminants you might have in ordinary milk (although ordinary milk is fine). Cravendale whole, semi and skimmed milk has as much fat as ordinary milk. There are legal minimums for each of these standards of milk, although the goverment recently relaxed this, which is why you can now have milk marketed as 1% milk and you will also soon get milk marketed as 2% and 3% milk.

wow a 40p saving

Like what exactly?

Hmm - 'nuff said. Looks like a solution looking for a problem to me!

Cold. There's been a better deal in Sainsbury's for months on 1% fat milk. 4 pints for £1.

Tsk - this is special milk which as been through a "purfiltre" (sic) to remove ghosts, ghoulies, weapons of mass destruction* and reds under the bed. You simply can't compare the two.

'Special milk' - pants. Don't beleive the marketing hype.
This is only one step up from UHT; real fresh milk will always be better....

So...if you remove various "things" from milk, how can the % constitution of what's left remain unchanged?

Sorry - I evidently forgot the "" in my posting.

nice.

This tastes no different to "ordinary" milk, unlike the UHT ****, but lasts forever. I used to buy cheaper milk but threw more away than I drank due to it going off after a couple of days.

Before putting this down because of it's normally more expensive price compare the use by date to the other milk alongside it.

"Things" like bacteria, micro-particles of fat, or other cells. Raw milk contains around 4% fat and dairies process the milk to remove the fat until it is down to a standard level. For whole milk this is approx 3.5% fat, for semi it is around 1.5% and skim is as close to zero as possible. The surplus fat is valuable and as a by-product it is used for butter or cream. It is therefore in the dairies interest to remove as much fat as possible, whilst staying above the minimum standard. Nothing is added to milk during the process apart from skimmed milk or cream to balance the fat content (no water, no sugar, nothing) - the only exception to this is milk which has extra additives, like omega 3. Cravendale is pasturised like ordinary milk and is not UHT. Paturised milk is heat treated before packing, whereas UHT is heat treated very quickly in its container which helps it last that little bit longer. Sterilised milk (remember that?) is also heat treated in the bottle (basically baked), which caramelises the sugars and gives it a funny taste.

As you have probably guessed, I work for a dairy (and I used to work for the dairy that produced Cravendale), and whilst our milk is not micro-filtered, it is filtered and clarified to remove as many impurities as possible. There is not that much difference between the filtration process, but that little bit extra that is done helps to make Cravendale last about a week longer than ordinary milk.

Not much information. So we've established that it lasts longer than normal milk. That seems to be the only advantage.
