About this deal

The Creative Sound Blaster X4 is a 24bit/192kHz External USB DAC and Amp Sound Card, Super X-Fi, Multi-Channel, 7.1 Discrete Surround, Optical-in, Optical-out, Line-in, Mic-in, Headset-in for PC, Mac and console.

I've been looking into getting a USB Dac for my Desktop setup as my brother gave me a Denon micro system for christmas, he recommended a DAC and I wanted to mix my chromecast or bluetooth audio (n.b. it's not that clear from the advertising, but bluetooth audio would need to be connected via line in as the bluetooth on this is just for controlling with the Creative app) and PC sound conveniently. This looks like it does that and a whole lot more including gaming, outputs for 7.1 speakers if I want to change things around in the future and headphones.

Also currently 4.25% TCB.

#TeamSpeakers or #TeamHeadphones?
Why not both? The Sound Blaster X4 supports up to 7.1 discrete and virtual audio channels, so you won't have to compromise on the way you enjoy your audio. It is also capable of incredible sound performance—acoustics depth and detail—giving a new lease of life to your headphones and speakers.

Also, it offers not just one, but three different surround sound delivery options. Feel free to discover the unique characteristics of each surround option, try them out on different types of media content, and maybe—relive that favorite piece of yours in a whole new light.

Super X-Fi Headphone Holography
More than just surround technology, Super X-Fi is our award-winning audio technology that captures the listening experience of a high-end multi-speaker system in a professional studio to recreates the same expansive experience in headphones.

Without missing out on audio cues and immersive ambient effects, you'll be able to hear the details effortlessly from your headphones—especially spoken dialogs in shows—with natural and lifelike soundstage that's deeply immersive and highly realistic, akin to the movie theaters.

Sound Blaster Surround Virtualization
We've been in this space for a long time—more than 30 years to boot. With our renowned Surround Virtualization technology, expect top-tier surround processing made possible through our highly optimized algorithms.

To put it simply, these algorithms intelligently identify and enhance the spatial information of the incoming audio, and optimize it for the chosen output format, drawing you to where the action is for a complete and immersive auditory experience.

Dolby Digital Live
For Windows users, the Sound Blaster X4 also features Dolby Digital Live for convenient encoding of any audio sources to multi-channel surround sound in real-time, all while transmitting data using only a single optical cable solution for decoding in a home theater system.

Hear Where They Are
Raise your KDR even further in FPS games with an unfair advantage over your opponents! The Sound Blaster X4 is equipped with both SXFI BATTLE Mode and Scout Mode, so you can choose* the best weapon for your victory

I have one of these with my Hive system.
It controls the boiler well but the lack of a earphone socket is a bit of a let down.

Was it brand new - i.e. not a Amazon Warehouse or other secondhand product - & did you try just the one, as it could have been defective?

Is this competition against the WiiM mini in playing the likes of Tidal Hi-Fi through an amp as not to compromise on sound quality?

I've had this thing in my cart for the past few days (they even sent me a 10% discount code of ARYLIC10). It looks pretty cool and I'm guessing the DAC will be superior. Plus it has a 50w amp built in. I think it's a much better choice to connect to a computer.

I had a bit of a deep dive and it looks a bit fiddly to control, possibly not that good quality. But it's a great box of tricks. I probably would have gone for it back in December when I was thinking about upgrading my speakers. I'd love to be able to stream to a box that's plugged into my computer but I don't want something that's fiddly to control. But I'll definitely keep an eye out for more Arylic kit!
