Is it any good at playing videos?

is it still picky about format?

This is a fantastic player for the money. You can also stick SDHC cards in to expand it past 16GB. Such a good price!

For anyone that owns one, does it have a sleep timer function? I like to listen to music when I go to sleep.

I wouldnt think so

I've got one of these and for the most part it's excellent.

The battery life is sufficient for my daily commute of 2 x 45 minute tube journeys and it charges to full via normal mini-USB within an hour.

The screen is crisp and clear with hardly any shadowing at all, even with high action videos.

All videos must be encoded before being loaded onto the player or they'll refuse to play, however the encoding process is very easy and if you download a decent xvid codec pack, you'll have no issues. Two full seasons of Southpark took 3 hours to convert and copy across. I normally do this this at night whilst I'm charging the player.

The only issue I've ever had with the player is that occassionally, if i rip and convert a xVid file, there may be an error that causes the player to blue screen and it freeze up. I can't even turn it off, so I have to leave it to run out of battery, then once it's restarted it's all fine.

I'd give the player a decent 8/10

I'm not really in to MP3 players, although this looks like a good deal.

But can someone tell me why it is better to have a dedicated MP3 player in your pocket, rather than just put a microSD card in a mobile phone and use that as an mp3 player for example? Isn't having an MP3 player just another thing to have in your pockets, along with a phone, keys, wallet, bits of paper, etc...

Only thing im not sure about is i have 253 itunes songs - is the only way to use those songs on this device by copying to cd and then burning them back in

If your asking that question, then you probably don't need a dedicated mp3 player.

Most of the older creative mp3 players do have a sleep timer function, so I was erring on the side of presuming this would too. Can't find it mentioned in any reviews though.

I seem to remember that if you use a SD / SDHC card its contents are not added to the library - not really an issue if you use it for vids - but not good if you want to keep your mp3 collection on the card and swap it between devices.

I agree it's a fantastic price and am sorely tempted (but i've treated myself to too many goodies lately!).

For anyone that buys this, Creative are offering a free concert download for anyone who purchases a zen until the end of July. Have a look here:

]http//ww…om/

Concerts to choose from include Coldplay, Gorillaz, Kylie, Lennie Kravitz, Massive Attack, Placebo, red hot chilli peppers.

What's the best way of using this in the car? I'd want to encode in WAV to get the best sound quality, so need a decent system to get it through my in car CD player.

Anyone owned both this and an ipod touch - how do they compare - this comment is not supposed to start a fanboy thread please :whistling:

Alternatively is it worth holding out for one of the new Iphones - does anyone know if these will be unlocked easily?

support.creative.com/Pro…2GB

Lots of trouble with these, main gripe being the sd card. Doesnt integrate well with the player, no library support, and no bookmark, so if you watch a film, its beginning to end,.
Screen and size is fantastic though.

As mentioned I bought one of these and they are excellent, great easy to use player and the CD card slot is a great feature

Hmm shame about the library problem with SDHC cards. If that is fixed in the next few months with a firmware (or similar) update, then I'd get one in a hearbeat. Until then, I think not. No point expanding by 16GB etc, unless you can utilise the library feature!

@Skor
The tiny hole on the bottom edge is a reset button. Stick a paper-clip or pin in there and it just resets, so no more necessity to wait for the battery...
(There are two good reasons why I keep a paper clip in my car - and the other is called TomTom One ;-) )

I like my Zen, but cannot use the supplied software as it locks my XPSP2 laptop as soon as I install it. It does NOT show up in Windows Explorer as a Mass Storage Device so there is no drag'n'drop. You have to use some kind of software to load it - WinAmp works perfectly for me. I use mine in-car all the time, to listen to podcasts into the car stereo via an AUX connection.
A big plus for me was a mini-USB connection for data and charging - in car I just use my Motorola bluetooth speaker charger for my Zen, phone and speaker.

some times the reset button is part of the freeze, hence having to wait for the battery to drain. Check out the link earlier for this and many other problems.
Dont get me wrong, superb screen, great player, just the SD card is just about useless. So buy the biggest one you want and forget the expansion bit.

OK - I sit corrected. Reset has always fixed it for me (though you might ask why you need to reset it at all...).

There are a few of you who own one commenting on the thread now, so could any of you answer the question I asked a few pages back:

Does it have a sleep timer function? In other words can you set it to turn off after 15 mins, 30 mins or 60 mins for example, thus enabling you to fall asleep listening to it in bed.

Just got an e-mail back from Amazon, they have refunded me £10 which is great news - thanks for the advice

Had mine about a week and I can easily say it's the best bit of equipment I've bought in a long while. Even the missus was watching videos on it on holiday. I found CloneDVD mobile good for converting DVDs fairly quickly.

There are some firmware and updates that could solve some issues ie drag and drop at:

support.creative.com/Pro…2GB

was looking at this on play.com last night but was pricey at £159.99 so this post has made the probablility of me buying this over an ipod an almost certainty

All gone at this price. Now £134.95 from a Market Place seller
