I think most people would pick Samsung Evo 850 for a couple quid more but it is a good deal.
This is a good price for 500GB

The 850 EVO is not as great as it used to be, it's pretty old - the mx500 is far newer tech.

I have the MX300 is this worth the upgrade?

I suppose it depends on the price difference, the 850 will still be plenty good enough for most people I imagine and if it drops in price compared to this I'd probably go for an 850. I also don't mind that it's now had 2 years of real world usage so that should eliminate bugs found etc. However this deal is pretty sweet so heat from me
Hot, and performs great. Any SSD will be lightning fast when compared to a mechanical drive, but this one has some new tech, and that's a great price of late.
Mmmmh should I get this to upgrade my 8 years old Acer 5820tg or get a new laptop all together? Decision decisions

Thing is I'm not so sure it's worth to invest 100£ on such an old laptop. On the other hand I can't see any laptop that would be a consistent improvement without spending over 600£.

Just get smaller storage then, I recently got the MX300 275gb for £57 new on eBay, fine for system and apps, all important data will be backed up on a ext HDD anyway, it helped my older HP Probook it has an i5 and 8gb ram also so it's quite a quick machine now

Thanks for the idea, just got your same SSD for £55 brand new from Ebay 👌 My laptop has an i5 and 8gb ram like yours so hopefully this ssd will prolong it's career a bit more. I may convert the DVD drive with a caddy are reuse its 1TB hdd as a secondary drive.

Should last a good few more years. Recently fit an SSD in a bottom range MacBook Pro from 2010 and it’s still speedy enough to work from with no complaints.

Slightly faster, longer warranty, more life writes ... the MX500 is a great bit of kit. I chose one over the 850 myself in the end as a secondary drive (960 EVO for my primary).rockpapershotgun.com/2018/02/02/crucial-mx500-ssd-review/https://www.anandtech.com/show/12165/the-crucial-mx500-1tb-ssd-review/8

Agreed, I ended putting the same combo of drives in my recent build.
For anyone wondering if they should upgrade their old machine, I added this to 2011 desktop, and it's actually like a new machine.

Have Crucial increased their 5 year warranty then? I thought the Evo and MX500 were both 5 years.
As for being slightly faster ( or slightly slower depending on where you are reading) a normal human won’t be able to tell the difference ( Spider-Man would though).
And read/writes are a non-starter as a comparison-an Evo 850 will last long enough by far for normal users/gamers. Looking at the state of the world at the minute maybe even longer than it has left.

But yes the MX500 is tasty but still not as cheap as the Evo 850i got from Amazon last week
Was going to get this but went for Samsung 960 rvo 250gb, hope it's as good as peoppes say
does anyone knows how can I determine if my ssd is running out of life cycles, Anyone had any experiences ??

CrystalDiskInfo gives you an idea but don't worry about it. A bit of the old rightclick- property - Tools and optimise you disks if you wish to.
Also added a 850 evo SSD to a 2012 laptop last year. Unbelievable improvement. That said... just built desktop pc with a 960 evo... twice as fast than the 850... still...ANY SSD upgrade is worth it if you have an old HDD. Good deal OP.

I know you are kidding, but I have four windows machines in my house including a relatively new Surface Pro. I'm impatiently awaiting my fifth once my University gets their stock sorted (New XPS13).

Surface pros are such a pain. We have entire clients that buy those and many have been sent back due to weird unique issues that only they seem to have.

I have a Surface Pro 3 and 2017 Surface Pro. Regular use and plain sailing. Both drive dual 1080p monitors via the surface dock.

Was going to upgrade an imac 2009 with a SSHD that is a harddrive with 8GB nand. But this for double the price is a full 500GB of nand.

Can you put this in an imac? Do you need a 3.5" to 2.5" converter? How would you screw this into the machine? I know there are websites but they only show putting in a new 3.5" drive. Can you getbthis as a 3.5" drive or are all SSD's 2.5"?

there are 2.5" to 3.5" caddies which will do what you require. search on amazon or ebay.
Price dropped to £103
Big price drop to £91.99
Can this be reposted?
Never mind, I've just seen it's already been posted.
£76.97 now.
Or, if people prefer, it's 80.39, with free postage from crucial's website, also 3.15% topcashback too, that's about 2.70
So in effect it's 2 quid dearer on Amazon,
and for 2 quid more I chose from crucial,
thanks for putting me on to it l33d5
