You can run it as long as it’s ddr4. More ram is better than faster ram.

Look up your laptop specs on the manufacturers website. You won’t find many laptop that wont take at least 16gb sticks.
a small program called 'cpu z' from cpu-id will tell you how many slots you have, and what ram is currently in which slot....very useful program.

The program cpu z will tell you all the voltages, latencies etc of you current ram, and as long as the new ram has similar characteristics, you should be fine.
Also some of the companies selling ram inc crucial will let you download a utility, which scans your ram, and tells you which products they sell, that are 100% compatible :
