SATA =! mSATA. This is useful for ultrabooks or even bigger laptops like Thinkpad X220+ / T420+ which have mSATA slots, allowing you to install this plus keep the old hdd too.

That's because Crucial only list that; meaning that the M500 is available in 2.5" and mSATA. Here are the two product pages from Crucial:
crucial.com/uk/…SD3
crucial.com/uk/…SD1
But they are definitely not the same drive:

EDIT: and that's not to scale:

Never though of looking for those. Handy as in buy mSATA + case and be able to take the drive with you to any future ultrabook, but I clicked on few on Amazon and ebay and nobody seemed to list their height. If 7mm is possible then it would make the most sense. The only one I found which at least stated it's height was this one by Amazon themselves for £17 and it was 9.5mm

Now its £85.88!!!!

Quick, someone start a new thread!!!

and another when it goes down another 33p!!!

anyone using these mSata rather than SATA SSD's? is there any benefit other than using a slot that otherwise won't get used?

No benefit, same usage. just less weight and space

I think should also result in slight battery saving(but not sure) along with the above 2 benefits mentioned.

I have an X220, is there a spare slot for this or will I lose my WWAN/GPS? I can't remember what slots are inside.

Judging by this video and the page 75 of PDF, you will loose either wwan or the wifi slot.

Yep, msaini is right as far as I can tell from the thinkwikis:

thinkwiki.de/x220
I did look this up for a T420 and it's the same flaw. No mSATA + 3G
Space-wise, maybe if they had used half size for the wifi it would fit.
Of course, there is still one reason to buy this over the 2.5" SATA and that is for future proofing but does depend on getting a SATA case which is only 7mm thick (might be tricky) and is an added expense.

I have a 9mm Crucial M4 in mine, it slides in without the Lenovo bracket/Rubber which is not needed on an SSD anyway

is it worth paying the extra and getting the M550 with faster read/write times and an extra 16gb ?

WIthout doing a thorough research, I personally wouldn't bother as I wouldn't really notice the marginal difference. I think both drives are durable enough. Would rather get a Samsung EVO if I was to spend slightly more. Extra 16gig should be compensated by a external flash drive which I believe you already have.

I am tempted by the EVO @ £118 for 250GB
