Wow in 12 months what a price drop!
Just gone down to 179.95!

Damn, took the plunge for £93 on a 240Gb M500 SSD for upgrading a friends laptop. He'd have probably gone for the 480Gb at this price.
Never mind.
Thanks, heat added.
Should I spend extra money on a Samsung 840 EVO, or should I go for this? And why? Anyone please?

The 840 EVO has performed better in benchmarks and has better specs. The 500GB version costs around £40 more than the M500 though. I'm not sure it's worth the extra wonga.
You may want to consider a hybrid drive! Just bought this one for my PS4 doubled the memory, it's quieter and much faster than the standard HDD it had. It's actually on par with not much slower than an SSD and for only a fraction of the cost! The drive starts to learn what programs or apps you open and use the most and boots it faster. It becomes faster after learning your usage.

The Samsung EVO is a bit faster but uses the cheaper TLC NAND which means it may not be as durable as the Crucial M500. I'd go for whichever is cheapest at the time.
I have one of these in my laptop - paid almost twice that price IIRC.

At this price it could be worth getting another for my DVD tray, rather than getting a 960GB.

+SMELTING PRICE PER GB :-)

Brilliant price and worth getting if you have not already updated to SSD,mainly as the 480/960gb Crucial drives, do not slow down like the 120/240 ones, as you fill the space up with junk!

Retained read / write speeds are as advertised, even with a 7/8 full 480gb drive we have in a client laptop :-)
hot just not as great as the ebuyer seagate 600-480 deal @ 160 quid

I really do regret getting a 13.3 inch laptop now. Would love the option of having 2 drives.
I had no end of problems with two crucial m4 's. My samsung 830s have been solid, but i read theyd cheap'd out on the newer ones so it might depend on how much cash you have
Got this drive a couple of weeks ago for a Mac mini. Superb drive, best bang for buck out there imho. Not as quick as a Samsung Evo but you are unlikely to notice the difference in real world use unless doing high sustained read transfers. The Crucial M500 is actually a little more feature rich than the Evo though and won't suffer from poor write speeds if you do a large transfer - an issue that can affect the Evo due to it using an SLC cache during writing.

you'd be one of few i'd expect possibly outdated firmware which fixed many problems
damn tempting

I've never encountered any IT tech that didn't get cheaper.

True, but my wife's not a techie and I have a trustworthy face.
The Samsung EVO 500GB is now at its lowest price ever on Amazon too at just £209.99... they're coming down nicely now it seems!

rip off, youd have to be pretty sad to buy this

No mSATA port?

(Even then .... using ONLY SSD's is a bad idea. Once TRIM is enabled data recovery is nigh on impossible. At least one traditional HDD should still be in play for backup purposes ...)

Good price on this ....

You haven't noticed the higher price of RAM, hard drives and GPUs. Traditional desktop hardware is getting more expensive as people shift to mobile tech.

Cost per transistor isn't reducing as we transition to smaller manufacturing nodes. Nvidia is getting more expensive so I am forced to look more mid range. It used to be £300-400 for the top single GPU card and now it's £500-600 with Titan pushing £700+

Good price drops on the SSD front. Everything else - not.

hybrid are good but are very juicy compared to SSDs, In fact they use more power than regular HDDs. good for speed and storage but I would still advise to go SSD in a laptop

That's the strangest tech advice I've seen in a long while.
You should never rely on data restoration as a backup solution. If you want a backup, buy an external hdd, and copy everything over.
Fantastic. Just ordered!

Cheer up and have a nice day every day. Try not to post negative comments all over the threads on hotukdeals like this one :"dont need them now, winters over" as you depress yourself with all the negativity.

That chart is a load of rubbish! I paid £179 for this from amazon in early December! Obviously still a good deal and I recommend it highly but don't rely on those price tracking websites. Was amazon themselves that sold it to me for that price so should have registered on that tracker.
Cold for me I'm afraid this was 159.99 on ebuyer last week in the daily deal section!

Was that a seller at Amazon? Because I think the chart only tracks direct Amazon sales.

No mSATA sadly. I keep the majority of my media on an external drive (Seagate Central) and relevant cloud solutions (Google Music, Flickr). But I still need at least a 480gb drive for my iTunes (ugh) and Steam.

I didn't mean rely solely on recovery. Just pointing out that a properly set up SSD is nigh on impossible to recover from in many circumstances.

I simply mean don't use SSD as your only storage solution, whether in single or multiple drive form. (Although you'd have to be pretty well off to do so with any volume of data!) As you say, a mechanical HDD should be your backup solution. (It is for me.)
