Wow SSDs are back to a good price again, roughly 20p per GB! Don't need one myself but that's certainly a hot deal.

this model is being phased out as the MX500 is much better tech

Just for internal storage.
Gotta say, for the money this is brilliant.

Thanks for sharing that.

I'm still weighing up my options on what the best SSD is for me (I already have a 250GB 960 Evo for booting).

If money is a priority, the older version is the obvious choice, but is personally prefer to pay a little more and get the newer version.
Bought for the same price during black Friday sales. Is a very solid hard drive. Huge step up from my previous sshd. OS and games load much quicker.
Thanks. Just seen while commenting on 525GB internal SSD which is being sold at £166 . This seems better

Good link thanks.... Would it show any noticeable difference for a user who is looking for general everyday use, some videos, family photos, beat the usual tardiness which creeps in a windows PC after a few years...I am assuming not. Thanks

Been tracking the launch of the MX500, but the difference in performance looks negligible. Views ?
Would any one recommend this for upgrading my 2012 iMac?

I'm not an expert on SSDs and rely on reviews etc.

This review is pretty good anandtech.com/sho…iew

Speeds seem similar, but the mx500 offers a five year warranty instead of three and the lifespan is 360TB instead of 220TB.

They also note the mx500 is more well rounded and note the mx300 takes a hit when subjected to heavy writing.

Again, I'm not too clued up on SSDs, but there does seem to be a few reasons to opt for the new version.

Same price showing for me. So very, very tempting.

Price drop might convince some to buy. Solid reviews and feedback.

Yes, will make a huge difference if you’re ok opening up the iMac...
Still happy with my Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD purchase from eBay Oct 2015, £250 (after 20% discount code) plus earned 1794 Nectar points!

Performance comparison with this drive:

Anybody who hasn't experienced an SSD, it's a must. There's such notable difference to the speed of everything.

I put an SSD in a 5 year old laptop and startup time went from around 1 minute to 6-7 seconds.

Buying an SSD always meant that you had to settle for less storage but these prices now are giving you the best of both.

Yeah but...my SSD is on the way out after what must be a handful of years at the most (I'm expecting it to be around 3 years old). Great for booting from, not equally good as ye olde HDD for lots of writing. In fact I'm looking for a good mechanical drive.

Is your iMac the one with or without a DVD drive? If it's without then really good luck to you with that one as the screen is glued and if you mess it up that's one expensive disaster on your hands. Hopefully for you, you have the fatter older model and it's fairly easy to take the screen out, just make sure you don't electrocute yourself on the PSU as the capacitors stay charged for some time after it's been switched off and the mains cable removed.

Is it really as dangerous as you sound? I bought all the kit to install ssd to 2x imacs next week on iMac 21.5" Late 2013 - 2017 models. The video installation looks time consuming but not difficult or dangerous so that's why I'm doing it myself but they never mentioned any of the later electrocute problem that you mentioned. Here it is the installation video for anyone else that are considering to do the same.

btw, I ended up getting 500gb and 1gb samsung ssds since I figure I might as well go for the best since I won't be upgrading these again in the future.

I was considering Crucial and then read research that Samsung EVO850 is very reliable and has 5 years warranty so decided to splash the extra cash on Samsung instead which is £280. EVO 850 is faster but not noticeably for normal user so I'm just paying extra just to avoid any potential problems in the future.

I love these videos, I mean you don't even need to know what you're doing and they make it look easy. If you break that screen then that's an expensive mistake. And God yes do NOT touch the power supply unit inside, you might well be crying long before then though. The very best of luck to you, I hope you don't mess it up and be careful not to damage any cables inside when removing the screen.

Watch some more videos like the one below and she mentions the risk of electric shock at 4:48 the shock is bad enough to burn your skin and you won't be holding that screen when you scream in pain and reel back from the iMac if you do touch it, so if that happens there's a high risk of you dropping the screen breaking it and/or damaging something inside. I've seen this electric shock happen 3 times and each time the person working on the iMac was burnt, they were stupid though and should have discharged the PSU first, ah well you live and learn and sometimes you die from your mistakes, you won't die though you'll likely just get a painful burn. I would carefully heat the edges of the screen with a decent hot air workstation, anyway you won't have one of those so you need the metal cutter tool as in the first video.
