Maybe because the storage can be ten times cheaper?
Yeah, the price difference.

It's got to happen one day as more plants go online.
I can imagine multi-core cpus with built in gfx, i/o and non-volatile memory storage in 1 single chip. No flash or eepom. Just power it up and it will be instantly on.

They are talking 20TB hard drives by 2020.

Samsung can already put over 35TB in a 2.5" size. That will be 100TB one day in 2.5" size.

Gotta love technology and scifi, that's my God.

Cool story bro. I paid 1p for some penny sweets back in 1995. There 10p now.

Feeling hot hot hot. Although the ssd will be running cool cool cool.
Typical. Ordered 120 GB yesterday, and now 250GB is dropping.
Great SSD, bought 500GB version and i'm really happy with it...

"here's currently two available as from Amazon Warehouse for a few quid less too."
Possibly no warranty on the marketplace ones so not really worth the minimal saving.

You can get 4tb ones but they will cost you around 1k haha.

SSD's should be the norm in all machines though, for at least OS booting (exception of large NAS's). Apart from the disk in my FreeSat box, I don't have any mech disks in my house.
Been looking for one recently. Thanks for the heads up....just ordered one for tomorrow.

Rise of the machines
Can these be put in an usb-c caddy easily to use as an external for video editing?
Can these be used for storing games on the Xbox One?

Can these be used for storing games on the Xbox One?

Of course. SSD in xbox one greatly improves load times but the drive must be 250gb or more to be recognised by the Xbox. You just need an external caddy to go with it.

Something like this - ORICO 2.5 " Hard Drive Enclosure USB 3.0 for SATA III HDD / SSD - Clear Case amazon.co.uk/dp/…QEB

Don't have a ps4 however I believe you can either:

a) Replace the internal hard drive for an SSD
b) Use an external hard drive through usb plug in
c) Use an external SSD through usb plug in

So yes is the answer heh.

I bought the 240gb for £43 a year ago. Waiting for that offer again

It’s not 1TB in a single chip. It’s 1Tb in a single chip and 1TB in a single drive.
This is good, but the 500GB is a better deal.
Nice find! Hopefully we'll see prices drop to pre shortage levels soon.
275GB for about 10p more on ebay

Samsung are mass producing 1TB chips.
It's 512 Gbits made from 64 layers. They then stack 16 of these into a single package.

512 / 8 * 16 = 1TB
30 chips making 30TB.

With
40GB DDR4 in a single package, 4GB stacked 10 times.

Wow! That is impressive! Now I understand why you were saying(embarrassed)
Good to see the price is gradually coming down on SSD's. Soon I will be able to replace my ageing mechanical drives (yes I still do use two mechanical drives in my PC, in 2018, crazy I know) - no more noise!

This tech is the future for large scale storage. Nand is just too expensive.
Samsung are ahead of the game.

That is the reason why Samsung sold their hdd division, they knew silicon was the future of storage.

I actually have this ssd and it works fine with my xbox one s.
It says in the settings it has to be 256 or more, but its not the case, this one works fine.

They got out because the HD204ui recall would bankrupted them. I bought a load because they were cheap but after a couple of years they started bombing out my PCs due to slow access rates. Only fit for an external drive as they were terrible. They should of been whipped naked through streets of rabid animals
Same price from Crucial direct for anyone not on Amazon

That is also why Seagate Bought Sandisk.

There is no future in mechanical hard drives. Even if there is a role for HDDs at present, it wont be long before they are obsolete.

They cannot compete in terms of reliability, versatility or storage capacity.

Soon they wont be able to compete on price.

Wack one of these in an aging laptop and thank me later.
Developments like the one below are speeding up the reduction of SSD based prices all around.
