Yes, it is a direct replacement but much faster and more reliable.

PowerExtreme

Yes. If the existing one is a SATA interface(not an mSATA or otherwise). This one uses the same connection interface. Hence compatible.

f4had

Is this compatible as a direct replacement for 2.5inch 240GB SATA 5400rpm?

spannerzone

I got this BX500 240GB recently from Crucial for £37 and it works well, it's a cacheless design I believe but in day to day use there's no obvious difference to a cached SSD. If you regularly shift large files then maybe look at the MX500 or a Samsung.... but this is an excellent price for a good brand SSD. There's 3.15% cashback via TCB too. I see Amazon have price matched this too.

200tb tbw not good enough compared to others mentioned. Better faster and more enduring drives are available for around the same price.

stevedarkly

That's progress for you. QLC is all about cost cutting, not bringing a better product to market. Having said that QLC-based storage will still provide years of reliable storage for casual users who never come close to filling their drives. "Cheap" QLC drives like this are ideal for storage of static data such as Steam libraries where faster reads are desired but will be subjected to very few complete write cycles, in which case there is little to no benefit in spending more and it will last effectively forever. Those who hammer their storage with 4K video workflows will definitely want to look elsewhere though, that 200TB write endurance limit will come around very quickly for professionals.

Bigspin

Absolutely... For "Joe Average" SATA will do just fine. Problem is most laptop makers now moved to M.2 NVMe standard and no longer support sata. I'm actually expecting these 1TB P1 QLC ssd's to come down in price and settle around £120-135 range.

Gkains

But surely even considering NVMe implies having more than average workload in mind. For those just moving to SSD storage, a normal SATA drive will do

Bigspin

How much you write per day? Even if you write 50gb per day this will last more than 5years. This is more than enough for avarage consumer who want to move to ssd storage option.

Thanks, was unaware of this, saved me some hassle!

noddynodnod

Neither did I until I installed one a while back and 2 of my hard drives no longer connected (embarrassed)

Fluxtroid

I know that M.2 uses either NVMe or SATA (I have 2 NVMe slots), but I didn't realise that the SATA M.2 slots actually remove the use of one or two standard SATA ports.

noddynodnod

It depends on the motherboard spec., but if the M.2. slot is a SATA interface, it effectively replaces 1 or 2 of the other SATA ports that you typically connect hard drives to. The more expensive NVMe connects through a PCI interface (not SATA), although it still sits in the M.2. slot, so it doesn't take up any SATA ports (normal hard drive ones). Hope this makes sense. Edit: Usually the motherboard manual will say something like "Using SATA in the M.2. slot will disable SATA 1 and 5" so I advise checking if you have a lot of hard drives.

Fluxtroid

Genuine question: how will this take 2 SATA ports when it's M.2 form factor?

spannerzone

Go via Topcashback for a couple £'s - delivery for me was about 3 working days.

whathesmeg

OK so I thought I could install this drive and keep the 2.5" drive in my Dell Latitude 5480. I can only fit a 2.5" SSD OR this one. With a M.2 drive it is also limited to single sided M.2 drives which means 500gb and some 1TB M.2 drives. You would have thought that these smaller drives would fit no problem. However this deal will help someone and thanks to all the HUKD members who have posted deals that have saved me money!

tony_dudz

The handiness of not having a cable is the main reason i reckon. :)

Just.Wondering

To be honest, I've got nvme and regular m.2 in two different systems, boot times and load times are pretty much the same, given the choice I would go with GB over speed...

Ive not said it does, I dont think you understand what i've written, Its a generalised statement not one thats aimed at anyone particular. You mean working in IT all this time has been a failing?

fiqqer

Yep! So even though it was cheap I have to spend an extra £150 for it to work as it should. That is £150 more than a good reconditioned business one. I usually buy refurbished business laptops which have always been great - both processing power and battery life. I thought Id' go with newish home user laptop this time. I'll be going back to my refurbished business laptops. They are much better value - much better made and much easier to upgrade.

Thanks OP. Can anyone please recommend a caddy to go with these 7mm HDD?

jon67

Fitted one to my Toshiba laptop earlier this week. Was about to bin it as it was extremely slow even after a full factory reset. Since fitting the SSD drive it has been totally transformed. It boots up fully in about 10 seconds compared to about 2 mins previously. A full virus scan for example takes about 15 mins compared to over an hour with the previous standard hard drive. A bonus was that the 1 tb hard drive I took out is now been used as a spare external hard drive once fitted to a external hard drive enclosure.

Bought this and returning my standard crucial 240gb SSD I got from Amazon. Not used it yet but this just seems a better solution, more memory and goes directly into my X370 Mobo. Voted hot, thanks OP.

For this money you can buy a Samsung SM961 256GB NVME M.2 ssd which although smaller in capacity is MUCH faster..... I've bought two now. They work out of the box with Windows 10 drivers.

Agharta

You would need a PCIe adapter and I very much doubt it would be a bootable drive in that system. So better off buying the 2.5 inch SATA version which is cheaper, doesn't require an adapter and is bootable.

malachi

Nope, you would have to get an PCI expansion slot if you want to use m.2.

Thanks. In this case it's already free. (popcorn)

If a deal posted on here makes you or anyone else on here angry I suggest therapy is the only resolution for you. See that particular deal I posted a few comments further up ;) Personally I see no reason to crucify a guy who has posted to give someone a heads up on a voucher email that so many of us appreciate the heads up on when it's Argos or Ebay. Parallelly. Nice word :D

Onlydongles

None of the commodities (gold, silver, sugar, wheat, rice Spinning hard drives) have doubled in price since last November when someone blagged it for £82 in Black Friday for a 750GB (mind). The pound was 1.22 $ in June of last year, and has since been strengthening. (today about 1.35$) . New demand apart, can you tell how much of the production has also been ramped up parallelly? Also the new entrants from China should have helped meet some of this demand? SO that logic also doesnt hold much water. It is pure profiteering and cartelisation. Micro Sd cards, Sd, and USb drives have all fallen in price (thay are also flash memories ie commodities, and also facing brexit winds) . So something stinks & needs investigation by the authorities. Definitely price fixing at work here.
