Current list of Coffee shops who give discount for reusable cup use

Refreshed 23rd Mar (Posted 19th Mar)
Hi Everyone
It's common knowledge that some coffee shops/cafes give a discount for bringing along your reusable cup instead of using a paper one. I'm not an eco-warrior of any description, but I do like saving money on my coffee fix. I wanted to start a list of cafes with current discounts and hopefully, with your help, can add to it - I've got the big names and a few smaller ones down and links to their recycling/sustainability pages if anyone is interested in that too.. Feel fee to suggest others, or any local ones that may help other HUKDers to save a few beans..

biggest problem with this idea is the thing driving people to coffee shops is convenience, them carrying around a coffee cup and cleaning it is not convenient,

so okay you bring in another reason save 50p, but on the other hand people who go to costa and spend £9 a day on a scanky 1 small bap and 1 slice of bacon with a coffee and cake really could not care about saving 50p!

be intresting to see the % of customers that take advantage of these offers

Paper cups tend to be plastic coated, they come stacked in plastic bags and the non-spill lids are plastic so it is all helping.
Nothing wrong with being an eco-warrior btw! Part of being an eco-warrior is saving money and resources

M&S 25p!!

Can't see anything online about m&s.. can you find anything?
Just wondering about Greggs - usually I buy a latte and a savoury slice (or cake) and you get a discount for that - do you still get the 20 p extra knocked off if you have already been given the discount as above then? Thank you.

I'm curious I have a reusable cup but can the discount be applied if you sit in the store with it? Or is it only for takeway drinks?

Nope

On food it's different because they have to pay a tax for people eating in, drinks there is no tax,

Same happens with plastic no doubt Costa or Starbucks are getting tax exemptions for doing this

Takeaway only unless you are really cheeky
A lot of local coffee chains offer these too, it's worth checking!
M&s instore cafes offer 25p discount when using your own reusable cup. I work there as a master barista and we get loads of customers using their own cups

Yup - greggs only give the discount if it's not part of a deal.
Wholefoods gives 50p off as well

Cheers mate!

I’ve been a part of the HDUK community for a while and have seen the support they give to great products and causes.

We are really grateful to everyone who has placed an order so far.
Bringing my own cup for 2£ cup of tea driving me mad! What l paying for then? Wonder how much will charge me if I bring bag of tea as well!
This is not really a discount considering your doing the work. May as well just bring coffee from home in a reusable cup and save £3.50.
Just want to add that you can also save 25p buying any hot drink from Picturehouse cinema if you bring your own cup, although it's not considered an actual coffee shop it does serve up all the classic espresso based drinks in addition to a range of tea's etc.

I think it’s more about the environmental factor. Reducing the amount of cups we are using globally per year. Over 2.5 billion.

They have tried to pass a latte tax, similar to the plastic bag tax, to motivate consumers to adopt a reusable, but it hasn’t passed in parliament.

Like plastic bags it’s a process of changing someone’s long term habit. It takes time.

Not really; I'd rather sit down and drink from a ceramic (or glass) vessel personally.

It's perfectly ok to have your drink in. Pret even asked me and i said drink in. They were fine. Saves them a cup to wash!!

And that’s your choice, when sitting in.

We are talking about those who choose to takeaway
Buy a greggs reusable cup for £2 and get a free drink. Nice cup as well.

You're better off investing in a good quality leak proof small thermos imo.

Each to their own but when I go to a coffee shop I want to sit down and take the ambience of the place and unwind.

Don't know how people drink coffee whilst walking to work etc.

The paper cups you refer to all come with a plastic lid! the "paper cup" is also usually coated with a thin layer of plastic.

There’s a Boots 5mins from my office.
I do wonder how long it would take to get banned if I pop in once a day for a free coffee and never buy anything else. Or if not banned, at least bullied away by the staffs.
