Seems a great deal considering 100 blades are included, in comparison to how grosely overpriced the big brand blades are.
Also included is shaving soap, shaving brush and styptic matches.

This is a shavette, a proper 'cut-throat' or 'straight' razor doesn't use disposable blades.

Price isn't really that good. Arko is about 4 quid, Derby's are about 3 quid, that boar bristle brush that is no doubt crap is on amazon for 3 quid, styptic matches are about a pound and a generic shavette from as low as £2. So pretty standard.

I cannot emphasise this enough, this is not a cut-throat or straight razor, it is a 'shavette' which whilst a similar shape takes disposable razor blades.

Anyway, it's a good price, a styptic pencil alone is about £2-3. However, I prefer a double edge razor as a safer and equally cheap to use alternative to expensive cartridge razors.

These things usually can take De blades but those supplied are single edge.

Also, doesn't come with a styptic pencil. As I've said, the price of this lot is pretty standard.

I also think it'd be a poor introduction into 'proper' shaving as shavette's are not the easiest things to use. A DE razor or proper straight would be far better and you'd be less likely to give up and chuck it in the bin.

was looking at this one...any thoughts … was looking at this one...any thoughts ?http://www.amazon.co.uk/Parker-Interceptor-Safety-Gunmetal-Finish/dp/B004XUV7QY/ref=sr_1_7?s=drugstore&ie=UTF8&qid=1363194215&sr=1-7

Parker razors are made in India and get mixed reviews. There are some question marks over build quality. Best to stick to Edwin Jagger, Muhle or Merkur for quality (Edwin Jagger made in the UK and Merkur and Muhle are made in Germany), though Edwin Jagger don't do a long handled razor, the Muhle R89 has the same head as the EJ De89 which is ideal for 'newbs'.

If you want be be über retro, get a Gillette fatboy or slim adjustable off eBay! They are bulletproof and will last you a lifetime.
Blue diamond blades, a badger hair or badger/boar mix brush and some Arko shave stick.
Watch geofatboy on YouTube for shaving tips.
    You'll never look back!!

I really wouldn't recommend a shavette if you've never used anything like this before. You could cut yourself very badly, especially if you haven't got any experience of creating good lather using a brush or prepping properly for a shave.

Come and join us on the HUKD DE shaving thread. We don't bite and there are people there who are only too willing to offer advice or answer questions. (edited)

This is by far the most interesting thread on HUKD for some time. I am … This is by far the most interesting thread on HUKD for some time. I am really torn if I should go for a DE or straight razor. I like the 'romanticism' of having a straight razor, but they do seem quite a bit of work. Hmm think I will need to do some more research.

Note that this thread refers to a shavette rather than a straight razor. I don't have any experience of using a DE so can't tell you the pro's or con's.

A shavette is pretty tough to use, and mistakes are severely punished. I wouldn't go back to using one.

A straight razor is a very enjoyable way to shave. It takes much longer to shave than using a disposable. It also takes skill (personally still got a lot of learning to), and you have to maintain your shaving equipment a lot more. That said it's a really enjoyable and calming way of shaving, I've heard it described as zen-like!

Shaving properly turns shaving from a daily chore into something a lot more enjoyable, something you take pride in knowing how to do.

Cost-wise shavettes and DEs are relatively cheap. A starter kit for a straight razor (razor, strop, soaps etc.) will cost around £140. Hope this helps.

Maybe consider DE shaving instead of Cut Throat. It's changed my shaving experience.
Ref the pack - looks good and cheap although Derby blades are not favoured by many.

DE is Double Edge, I was converted last summer. I'm not going to go back, not sure I could do cut throat though.

    Another DE convert here.

The straight edge does intrigue me though, but i don't think i could use one without thinking of Sweeney Todd and getting a bit nervous.

The Edwin Jagger De89 is the razor most often recommended for those starting out with DE shaving. I have one and It's not too aggressive and really well made. Costs a bit more initially than buying a Gillette Mach 3 or what have you but you save a fortune on the blades in the long run.

You can get cheaper DE razors but they last a lifetime so spending an extra fiver or so for a good quality one is worth it.

See the items described in this OP for a good quality starting kit. Initial outlay circa £50, but a decent brush and razor will last a lifetime. Astra SP are highly recommended - I use them myself - and can be picked up for about £8 per 100 on the bay. Avoid Derby blades were possible as they seem to be highly inconsistent in quality. Alternatively get a sample pack from Connaught Shaving to find a blade that suits you. Trust me you won't look back. Your fusions etc are a rip off.

Disagree with the two negative comments towards the Derby Extra blades. I know a lot of people dislike these blades but blade choice is a very personal thing. Derby's are a very forgiving blade for newcomers to DE shaving and a good blade for men with sensitive skin, they may not be the sharpest but that's not necessarily what you want when you're starting out.

Agree that it's a personal choice but I found that the quality varied blade to blade and not necessarily pack to pack. However, try and judge for yourself

As others have said the Edwin Jagger DE89 is a good choice and you can get them for under £20 although tbh I would order from a dedicated shaving site like Shaving Shack or Nkdman (they are more knowledgeable, respond to emails and prices the same or less if you take into account their perks and 10% off codes)

The DE89 come with a different choice of handles (barly chrome is the nicest IMO and under £23 if you use the 10% code). Other ones to look at are the Muhle R89 razors - these use the same heads as the DE89 but you can get them (Grande versions) with a longer handle.

If you get a brand name razor (eg Jagger, Merkur or a Muhle) and you find DE shaving isn't for you, you can always sell the razors on Ebay. If you don't want to spash out on a decent brush initially try shaving with Natural Grooming Co Sensitive gel - its oil based so doesn't lather (so brush is not necessary).

I shave using a Dovo straight razor from the Invisible Edge website (http://www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk/). I had a nasty accident changing blades using a shavette, (own stupidity), so I'm sworn off them now.

Even if you don't fancy shaving using a straight edge razor or a shavette, investing in a badger hair brush and some shaving soap will save you a lot of money in the long run, and will give you a closer shave than using canned foams, even if you use a disposable razor.

I switched to DE shaving about a year ago and wouldn't switch back if Gillette gave me a lifetime supply of Fusion blades for free. Be warned though, what started out as a cost saving exercise turned into an obsession, buying expensive shave creams and a badger hair brush. I probably spend more now on shaving than I ever did, but it's a much more enjoyable and rewarding experience and as close as a man should ever get to pampering themselves.

The results once you get the hang of it are nothing any Gillette shave will ever achieve. Generations of men are being brainwashed by PR that multibladed garbage offers a better shave. It only took be a few shaves to get used to it and i never need a styptic pencil now as i never get even the smallest bloodspot.

I have quite thick hair though and Derby blades were rubbish for me, I found Tesco own brand Israeli made blades to be way better. Think they're under £2 for ten and I get about 5 shaves from one blade.

Do yourselves a favour and stop throwing money at Gillette.

    Another double edge shaving convert.

Old 1960's Gillette fatboys and Gillette slims can be had on ebay for 30/40 quid. I recommend Astra Platinum blades. They cost about 8 quid for 200 on Amazon (when i got them) and last much better than the Derbys.

I use Feather blades in an EJ89b DE razor, you can usually get 50 blades on ebay for around a tenner now and again, 3 or 4 shaves per blade if you dont leave it a month inbetween like I do, so 150/200 shaves for a tenner plus the initial cost of teh razor and creams/brush. Save a fortune, get a closer shave and an enjoyble learning curve/experience/time out to yourself each shave.

I'll never go back to cartridge now, just too expensive
