Totally agree with bonzobanana, I've had Carrera, and a Voodoo in my collection, for the price, they are a solid bit of kit. You may want to change your tyres at worst but these bikes last! Voted hot.
Since when we're carreras bad? I've had a couple and for price they're great. They aren't top of the range but at the price you will struggle to do better.
Ok what is your evidence for this because they seem to review well both professionally and by their owners and despite Halfords huge sales numbers in the UK don't seem to suffer recalls like other brands. When I've viewed the bikes in Halfords stores they seem very well made with no obvious problems and offer better components for their price point than almost all other brands. I suppose Carrera is Halfords middle quality brand with Apollo below and Voodoo above. A Carrera bike is never going to compete with much higher price branded models. Voodoo bikes are the best Halfords offer which probably can compete with bikes twice their price but not bikes above that level.
A bit more like this one for example? https://www.specialized.com/gb/gb/men/bikes/mountain/trail/2017hardrock650b/115480 Absolute piece of junk BSO with a low end tourney derailleur and a freewheel FFS. Massively inferior to the Carrera Vengeance which at least can be taken off road. The same freewheel you will find on sub £100 bikes. Bikes should be judged on their specification not the brand slapped on. If people took your advice they could end up with a massively inferior bike to the Carrera that only resembled a mountain bike and was only fit for road use and gravel and not much else. Also that Specialized page clearly shamelessly lies to its customers. It has the heading 'Cassette' and then lists a freewheel. A freewheel is not and never has been a cassette. An attempt to make their junk bike read better than it is I imagine. The fact is entry level bikes from top brands are often complete trash. You probably have to pay twice as much just to get a similar spec to the Carrera. Also look at that specialized spec. It has a 7 speed front derailleur plus an 8 speed chain! It seems to be going out of its way to b***sh*t its customers. Who cares if the chain is 8 speed compatible when its fitted on a 7 speed freewheel bike and they don't even say 8 speed compatible its just 8 speed listed. They seem utterly desperate to sell what is an appalling bike for £360 suggested retail price. Also what is 'A1 premium aluminium' because no such aluminium exists. I'm in a cynical mood as you can read so on face value it looks like they don't want to be tied down to stating the aluminium as it may vary by the far east factory used and could be either 6 or 7 series aluminium. Whoever is cheaper at the time no doubt. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cogset
