Great unit, only problem is that the index does not work alphabetically.
With big hard drives finding a film can be a problem.

need to stick the file onto a USB pen and do the upgrade via the menu, but its all in the above text

BTW OP very good, tempted to buy one for the MKV play back, but CC too high so guess I'll leave it for a wee while,, heat added anyway

Got one before Christmas. Very good player

Thanks flinstone. Didn't spot that. I bought two of these for parents and inlaws and think they great value.

No funky menus like wd but a solsolid box, plays wide range. And prices above are good

amazon.co.uk/Sum…8-1

This looks like the 1TB model although it doesn't mention it in the specs people have said it includes a 1TB drive in the comments. Very good if true

It's just the basic unit -without any drive. I have so many 500Gb drives spare after all the 2Tb bargains on here that I already ordered this.

no Optical Out. so will pass. no vote.

You can get a convertor (from coaxial to optical) for around £8.

Lol, good luck if you order that and think your getting a 1TB drive aswell ;-). Thats just for the main unit..

is this the same one?

amazon.co.uk/Sum…8-1

as its £40.00 and the reviews inticate it includes the 1tb drive oO

Is there a variant of this device which has Ethernet?

Think its the same one but it DOESNT include - hard drive.
Spec says it has facility to support it and there is a customer review from someone who has it with a 2tb hard drive but think he has posted without clarifying it was something he bought as an extra.

buy a newer amp

since it does hdmi no problem!
Edited by: "daveleebond" 30th May 2011

Its a brilliant piece of kit. I bought two in last two weeks w/o the hard drives as I had 2 X 500Gb. It playes everything you throw at it. HDMI gives the audio output as well.

I'm tempted! Got a 1TB External network drive at the moment so does the same sort of thing but this is tempting!
Edited by: "Yomanda" 30th May 2011

If it matters to anyone this unit downmixes DTS to stereo if you are just using it connected to your TV as opposed to a AV amp. Plays MKVs well . Basic but clear menu system, easy to navigate ,responsive remote. Best deal on the 1TB unit at £70 as the base unit is normally £40 anyway,so £30 extra for the HDD is good value and you WILL fill it.For those with AV amps you will need to update the firmware to get the DTS and Dolby 5.1 soundtracks to play on your amp over the coax or HDMI output.

Got one of these for the wife for christmas, brilliant piece of kit so glad i bought it.

Very interested in this.
Can I upload films to the HD from a flash drive/memory stick or can you only play them?
What about Xvid movies with subtitles .srt files. How does this work? Do they have to be uploaded in a folder with the .Xvid and .srt together?

Just ordered the 40 quid one, so the kids can have all their films etc on it in the front room, so my egreat (popcorn hour) can be left in the back room for adults

I have loads of hard drives so will stick one of those in to keep the price down

only 3 left of the 40 quid ones

Fantastic price i use the wd live player that does the same but seperate drive that i had to buy extra.

Ordered. Hot!

Can someone answer this.

Do you need to take the unit to the PC to copy files over or can it be connected permanently.

I realise that I can use a caddy drive to transfer files but would prefer to just send the files directly.

I assume that there is no facility in the menu to 'Find' the PC directly?

Bare Drive - I ordered last week

can anyone tell me if it is possible to connect this up to a home netowk at all? Obviously it doesn't have a LAN input but would there be another way of accessing it from the network?
thanks.

no LAN support - this is a deal breaker - I'll stick with my sumvision cyclone v2.

What does this unit offer over a standard external hard drive and media capability on a TV?

Just ordered from 1 TB version from amazon, many thanks

the fact it can play nearly every video format on the planet

so who has one of these then ?

is the general idea that you plug straight into your computer then drag & drop to load it up, yeah ?

does it support pulling files direct off a USB stick onto the HDD on the unit, or can you only transfer onto the HDD on the unit via a computer ?
