I did
I have a Humax 8000T PVR.

I just opened it up and found that the hard drive is connected the same as in a PC.

Keep in mind though that some hard drives are not always compatible, so if the HD in the PVR is say a Seagate, then try and replace it with a seagate as that should work.

Thanks currychops and welcome to the forums JonDOnnis

That pic looks like a vestel box.. Same is sold as:
Dual
Digihome
Techwood
Evesham

Its available for £80 at Asda ( badged as Dual) - and obviously not a refurb ( so with full 12 month warranty).
As standard its a record one channel whilst watching another machine ( you can't record two channels at once). There is an unnofficial firmware you can load on it ( by linking to your pc via a cable) to enable recording 2 channels at once.
I have had no trouble or lock-ups with my 160GB Techwood version ( many of the cheaper PVRs have serious problems - especially the models from Aldi)

Thanks for the info simes..if I recall the picture is only for illustration purposes so is probably not accurate but you are probably correct that it is a vestal box...I'm looking for a PVR that records two progs at once but cannot afford the Humax at present...have you any link for the unofficial firmware?

Info and links to the firmware in this thread. Soemone has already posted that they tried it and it worked with the Dual model from Asda :

I wonder what brand the Dabs model is ( and if it is the same as the picture - a vestel made box)

Thanks for the info simes...maybe worth emailing Dabs customer services to find out what brand their box is.

hiya, this sounds like an amazing offer but my sole purpose is to find one at this PRICE but one that I can connect to the PC to edit files downloaded?

Apart from that Humax at £170, is there another way??

What is the actual Brand Name from the one in Asda? might check it out tonight.

and I have a laptop btw

The one is Asda is branded Dual...sorry but I cannot help you on the PC connection query.

I have the thomson pvr, its excellent and i wouldn't mind another one. I think they have stopped making the thomson one now which is a shame. Its a twin recorder so is there another which is as good as my thomson?

Is this locked down to record Freeview or can it be linked to a SKY box?

I note there are 2 scarts but sometimes the EPG on the freeview means that you can only 'see' channels within this software??

In general, PVRs only record from the onboard tuner

Some Asdas have them and some don't, my friend found out after going to his local then had to go to my local to purchase one for £80 since his did not have them in stock.... They also have the exact same machine under the Goodmans brand for £99.99

Hello
I just bought one of these and at 1st was delighted with it..................... If you exclude the way I received it not packed securely and did not appear to be refurbished! I have in the past bought refurbished goods and they have ALWAYS exceeded my expectations!! Well not this time:x Hey ho what the heck!!

I used it to record a program and it was fine and was no problem UNTIL I tried to watch another program whilst it was recording and thats when the fun started!!:-D
The program I was watching was unwatchable, it "jerked" and stopped and started like it was demented!!:w00t:
Its booked for a return next week to Dabs and a refund has been requested.............. Replaced with a Humax PVR 9200 lot more expensive but you get what you pay for???

The problem with jeking and stopping when watching a program whilst recording another sounds like a poor aerial signal.

If your signal strength is not good then this will happen, even on the Humax.
With Freeview you need a decent high-gain wideband aerial AND decent coax cable ( it must be double screened to stop impulse interferrence ). Impulse interferrence causes the picture break-up ( often caused by passing vehicles or central heating kicking in )

Thanks guys. just went into another ASDA and they had it on sale. had it setup and overwhelmingly impressed.

how do you connect it to your laptop/pc to make the firmware hack for 2-recordings and tv at the same time?

All I can suggest is you read through the thread left earlier in this post

digitalspy.co.uk/for…=25

These are now only £59.99 inc vat

You could buy one of the used units for £45.36 , as the posted ones are refurbs anyway. Just scroll down the page for the list.

Pick a warranty repaired model or one with stuttering or picture freeze as its 90% certain this was because the original owner had poor signal quality from their aerial. The used stock has a 90 day warranty .

All of them can be, you put a scart lead from your sky box to any recorder - and then record from that channel (usually something like L1, ext1 or AV1).
It's relatively dumb - ie, it records what you're watching on sky.
