Very good deal - many thanks!

Is there any point in getting this if you already have a smart TV?

Is there any point in getting this if you already have a smart TV?

No, owned a couple after reading all the hype about them. Now use an android box and it is far more useful than this

This is the old model. Getting rid of old stock
The new model has voice search Roku 3 4230

Do you need Internet/broadband for this to work?

Do you need Internet/broadband for this to work?

Yes. Absolutely essential.

You need internet if you want to stream media from the Internet for things like now TV and Netflix.

You don't need the Internet if you want to stream media from a computer on your home network or plug in a USB drive. But if you are streaming locally then there is probably a better or cheaper device for that.

Not a deal breaker though really, for £60?

The new Sky Now TV box will be out in August and I think its based on this Roko 3 model, albeit slightly restricted on what you can install. I believe it will be selling for about £15 so personally I might wait until then as with the same Entertainment Pass it may be as cheap as £25.

New Now TV Box

I bought it for this price last November in the Black Friday deals, albeit without the 3 months pass. Good price for what this is: it's very fast to operate, unlike some of the integrated smart TV stuff. Note the comment about the new Now TV box, so depending on what you're planning to use it for, it might be better to wait for that.

will it run kodi?

heat added....excelent price...

i bought my roku 2 (2015) last week for 69.99£... :(:(:(:(

What advantage is there with this compared to the original Now TV box for content? When I see "450 channels" I just think it means 450 channels of crap.

Access to all apps (inc Netflix) Nowtv boxes are locked down with Sky's firmware.

Nope

I've had Roku, NowTV, and Chromecast. If you have a tablet, or even a smartphone, you likely don't need a Roku. A lot of the content, such as NowTV, Netflix, iPlayer, Plex etc are all available as apps for Android and iOS, meaning you can save 50% on the already discounted price and grab a Chromecast.

If you don't have either of those, or want a dedicated solution for your TV, GET A ROKU 3 and an ethernet-over-powerline solution. Roju channel support far exceeds a NowTV box (a rebranded and gimped Roku itself), and you will kick yourself when your home wireless gets choppy because everyone within 100 yards of you is streaming the new GoT series at the same time.

A great bit of kit for those who don't have / want Chromecast.

Nope

To expand on this, Kodi is a standalone. you attach media directly to the device and Kodi transcodes, if necessary, and plays to an attached TV.

Roku is a client box which plays streams from a remote location. You don't store anything on the Roku. You'd have to install Plex to play local media, but again it would be as a client-server solution over your network. Plex is very simple to set up, on Windows or Linux (Not used Mac).

crank_girl

will it run kodi?

No, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives that will though. I personally have a Raspberry Pi 2 running Kodi and playing media from my Synology NAS. £30 for the Pi and £5 for a USB IR receiver & remote and it plays 1080p 3D media without a hitch.

But what's "all apps"? Not bothered about Netflix. Is there a list somewhere of all the amazing 450 channel content? I suspect at least 449 of them are not worth the effort of an upgrade from a first gen Now box.

I have a Roku 1 (similar but less powerful) and some NowTV boxes - you're about right with your assumption mate.

Still no Amazon Prime Instant Video, I believe, so not quite "all apps". Someone told me Amazon available on US boxes, but because Sky have an interest then they block it here.

Amazon also not natively supported on Chromecast, either, so still looking for something simple that does Amazon, Netflix and Now TV. Suppose might have to be an Android box?

The channel list you can see at roku's website. There are free channels and paid channels. There are also "private channels" that people develop and don't get into the roku's official channel list and you can add to your roku by inserting a code provided by the developer.

I have a Roku 2 (2015 model which is the same as the Roku 3 in terms of specs, but doesn't have the wi-fi direct remote control with headphone jack and doesn't have game support).

Yes, there are a bunch of crappie channels, but I installed the following channels and i find them useful for me:

* Crunchyroll ( it's netflix similar for anime/manga )
* Netflix
* Twitch
* Plex
* Shoutcast Radio
* Roku media player (watch movies, listen to music, see pictures on USB stick)
* A private channel to watch my country's TV (including premium Sports channels)
* A private channel that you can see your apple itunes subscribed podcasts based on your Apple ID

---

NowTV boxes are locked to their software. You can hack it to install ONE APP via sideload ( people get NowTV boxes for plex as it's a 9.99£ cheap media streamer ).

Will a chromecast be okay to stream football from my pc or mobile phone. Or do you recommend something more expensive. Can't decide on this or droidbox. But I don't need Netflix because I have a ps4

I've got a chromecast as well as a Roku 3, and this is better if you are using surround sound. The Chromecast won't use Dolby Digital unless it's running the Netflix app. The Chromecast hardly ever gets used for watching movies for this reason.

Ive got this, a wdtv box and the amazon fire stick. The Roku is the fastest, most reliable, has the most channels (apart from amazon prime) and is extremely user friendly, plus I do find the headphone jack in the remote handy when the mrs goes to sleep! Bargain at this price.

I love the wireless earphone aspect of this, you plug earphones / headphones into the audio jack on the remote and it mutes your TV, sending the sound through the remote instead. Excellent audio quality and brilliant to use in bed!

Android box all the way for me.

So much more versatile.

Get yourself one of these instead for 50% off, making it around £34.

Kodi 15 RC2 is excellent and you can add all the TVMC addons with ease.

TVMC still uses Kodi 14.2, whereas the 15 Isengard release candidate 2 is one step away from being official.

It will have greater support for a wider range of devices for hardware based decoding and more.

Try both and see which one works best for you.

TVMC addons are essentially just that, addons and whilst there may be a small possibility that some won't work in 15, I've found very few of them.

I'm waiting for the Nvidia shield box.

Scorching deal.

Although this looks exactly the same as the £10 NowTV box, and also comes with three months subscription, you'll notice that this is in fact a different colour.

Well worth six times the cost I'd say.
