Disappointed with image quality of Yi-Full HD Cam bought from Amazon posted here.
Reverting back to this beauty which I have already on Mrs's car and is proving well worth the money.

Gearbest also have the updated model with a new chipset (GPCV2156) - Model G1WHT for a cpl of quid more.

Cool...just ordered one...although gearbest is cheaper for the basic one...fleabay is only £23.11 (or make offer) for the newer chipset GPCV2156 one
Searched the web for info on the GPCV2156 and came across a cpl of forums where users were experiencing picture losses and frame jumps with the newer chipset.

The reason for the new cheapset is apparently because the original Novatek 96650 is no longer available.

Seems to have very good reviews

Got the yi myself. What's wrong with image quality?

Against my current G1W-CB the Yi is better in the dark but lacks the sharpness to read number plates both day and night. Not sure if it's just a fault with my Yi. During the day the picture is definitely not HD quality. When pasing stationary traffic the number plates are not legible.....not even on freeze frame.

I have one of these. Decent picture quality, but if you don't use it for a few days the capacitor completely discharges and the date/time resets to default. So in my case (a weekend driver) the date and time are permanently wrong. The unit also doesn't start up automatically if it's been discharged - you need to manually power it on.

If you can't read reg plates then it's obviously not suitable as a dash cam. Will have to check my recordings on laptop. Thanks
The video quality on these is good however the build quality is average. I had to get 2 replacement suction mounts and both stopped sticking to my dash after a few months of use. With that said, at £22 I would buy another

I was following the YI threads when the cam was on offer and I didn't see any mention of not being able to see number plates. I've still to open mines, would be nice if you could let me know what you find. Thanks

Update - Just checked out some youtube reviews and the camera seems fine for viewing number plates. I'll play around with mine soon.

The Novatek 96650 is still available, but one of the manufacturers of "G1WH" dashcams switched to the cheaper generalplus chipset, so the 96650 is just not available in a dashcam made by them.

The reviews I've read suggest the GPC based dashcams are inferior to the original Novatek + aptina based model, so stick with the G1W-CB and avoid the G1WHT.

Glad I held off the Yi.. that was tempting.
In an effort to get gearbest to sort issues some info for everyone.
I have bought lots of stuff from them and generally good, but when it goes wrong its a mountain to climb.

However recent android box went wrong. First remote then box. Gearbest customer service woes started.
Offered a couple of quid refund and no joy, or even understanding of English through gearbest ticket system, next to useless.
Escalated to paypal, eventually full offer of refund.
Eventually through paypal offered a UK return address for info (gearbest ticket system contradicted what they were saying through paypal)

Weiwen Luo
Address:

Phone: 07780841791

They then repeatedly refused delivery from courier. One could interpret this as a device to 'pretend' to offer refund then refuse to accept the returned goods. No goods return=no refund to pay.
Only when I refused final paltry offer from through paypal, (after they had previously offered full refund) did the return that mysteriously had been repeatedly rejected, was now accepted, on the day Paypal ruled in my favour for full return of money.
coincidence?
doubtful.

So if everyone uses paypal for payment and escalation, keeps full records, they will compel gearbest to fully refund. If everyone does this then maybe gearbest will sort it properly.
Hope this helps.
