Open Bing Maps in your browser. If you're on a mobile device make sure … Open Bing Maps in your browser. If you're on a mobile device make sure that you use the "More" option in the top right and choose "Request PC Version" (the mobile version doesn't give you the OS option). Search for the place you want (say, Keswick). Now select the type of map you want to view (there's a drop-down list either from a menu item or from a small square map icon - difficult to be precise as it varies). This will give you options of Road, Aerial, Birdseye, Streetside, Ordnance Survey. Choose OS. As you zoom in it will change from Landranger (1:50,000) to Explorer (1:25,000).

I'm struggling to find this option on my iPhone. Doesn't give me an option to open or request in PC version.

thanks ordered, the code has expired but it was still cheaper than amazon - cheers

I don't think you will be able to navigate using this app unless you pay for it. I would like loads of things but basic principle is that I have to pay or I can't have it. Really is a simple concept if you put your mind to it.

I don't listen to Radio 4 but it is part of TV licence, hence I have to pay. There are many things the government does that I disagree with but they use my taxes for it and hence I have to pay. There is a trend here ......

I'd suggest that if you are unable to locate the correct maps of NI sat in front of your computer, then perhaps attempting to purchase said map, with a view to venturing out into the wide open countryside, might not be the best course of action open to you at this juncture.

There are no laminated OS maps of Northern Ireland - I see the mods have removed the other posts...

Half right. power, of course. signal for gps is from satellites so no … Half right. power, of course. signal for gps is from satellites so no problems there. they generally have sky in the same places they have walks. If you need a mobile signal then you're doing it wrong and need to precache the map area. Official OS maps were made available for free. maps like maverick on android allow you to access and cache the area you're planning to walk in. This saves a lot of power and signal while you're out. would recommend backup portable charger if you're gonna rely on it in any meaningfully way. Personally, the smartphone with gps is a good backup to a paper map and compass and has helped a novice like me resolve a dispute between the 3 seasoned winter mountain walkers we were with.

Tried Maverick (free) last night and even though there's an option for OS maps they wouldn't show for some reason. Maybe the Pro version is needed. The Sustrans app used to show OS maps a year or so ago, but they replaced it with OSM maps due to licensing costs I believe.

PS The idiots thinking "Paper maps" are old fashioned. One of the (many) advantages of paper maps is you can, you know, open them out to get a good context of where you are in your surroundings. You don't get that on a 10" tablet.
Edited by: "Roger_Irrelevant" 15th Jan 2014

Gonna look into the Maverick app cheers, there is one called "Locus Free" (also a pro version) that lets you download huge areas of 1:25k from Bing Maps if anyone's interested (10000 tiles per day from memory, but you can resume). But always on the lookout for new ones.

With the (taxpayer funded) OS crappy licenses consigned to history you can now get the electronic maps free rather than the ridiculous prices they used to charge.

Apple users still have to pay through the nose though, but they're used to doing that.

Suppose if your entire route fits on two panels, and you don't want to look at any other bits/take map out. I never really mark the route but you can use dry marker pens on laminated maps which just wipe off.

I don't know if they blow up but I like the idea of being able to buy some normal Duracell from a shop if I am not at home and don't have access to my specialist charger. The fenix runs on 8aa batteries (obviously best to get rechargeables) which is why I like it. That and the fact it outputs 860 lumens on high and last for 10 days on low.
