Found 26th Mar 2015
Google have released a beta version of their data saving software for their desktop browsers. Could be benefit for those that browse on limited connections or tethering to a PC/Mac/Chromebook on limited mobile plans whilst browsing with Chrome.

SSL sites are not compressed (which is as it should be), nether are incognito sessions as pushing all your incognito sessions through Google's servers kind of takes the point out of the privacy aspect.

Reduces data usage by using Google servers to optimize pages you visit.

When this extension is enabled, Chrome will use Google servers to compress pages that you visit before downloading them. SSL and incognito pages will not be included.

Please note that this extension is still in *beta* mode. We appreciate you trying it and sending us any feedback you have by clicking on the Chrome Menu in the top-right corner, then Help > Report an Issue.

You can also enable Data Saver on Mobile Chrome on Android and iOS from the Settings menu.
