P&O's currently doing a great deal for wine-loving daytrippers. For just £19, you get a return Dover-Calais ticket for a car and up to 9 people (worth c.£35), and a free case of Ernest & Julio Gallo Winemaker's Seal Red or White wine. The wine is redeemable on the outward leg of your journey only; you'll get a voucher for it along with your tickets.

As part of the deal you'll also get a voucher entitling you to a buy one get one free onboard meal; the farmhouse breakfast on early sailings, or food from the 'Great British Classics' menu later after 11am.

The offer's valid for travel between now and 25th March 2010 (though excludes travel on 12, 13, 20 and 21 February), and can be booked until Wednesday 10th February. To book, go via our special link to P&O UK's website*. Going via this link will automatically put the code freewineDT in the promo code box. If for some reason it isn't there, enter it manually to get the deal.

This is an online offer only, so you won't get the same deal if you book over the phone. P&O's usual terms and conditions of travel apply (read them here). As this is subject to availability, grab your tickets sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment (or standard prices!).

Thanks. Heat & Rep

The case is only 6 bottles, not 12.

Still a cracking deal, though.

Shame its only a day trip - As its a long way to go if you are not near dover - not voted either way.

Good deal. You can also get 5% cashback via quidco.

You could always try booking 2 seperate returns a day apart :-D

Surely still at good deal at £38

Edit:...scratch that..:-(

Please note: Day return tickets are only valid when used as part of an outward and return journey. Failure to complete both legs of the booking will invoke a surcharge in accordance with our terms of business

Used to be a good tactic but the ferry companies cottoned onto this and now I believe they make checks to prevent you from doing this!!! Was a great way to save a fortune especially at high season.

Rascals that they are...:x

Great been waiting for this offer to come out. Think I saw an advert for £25 each way for longer trips in the weekend papers, not sure if it had a book by date.

Great deal, where is the best place to stock up on wine in Calais ??

Aw thats a shame. Could do with it to do Disneyland on the cheap!

Doesn't the poor Euro still make this worth it?

I would have a wander down to somewhere like Bolougne or Le Touquet and have a nice lunch. If you go to Bolougne with kids try the Nausicaa centre which is a great half day out (but not cheap)
Wander round the hypermarket and pick up some stuff you can't always get at home but unlikely to be worth while buying loads as Euro rate means its no cheaper in general

With the wine thrown in on the ferry (average wine but OK if its "free" I guess) its a nice day out

Thanks!

A fantastic offer. Would be perfect to stock up for the many tournys i'm in over the coming months. A friend has suggested we go for it for friday afternoon., should be fun

Do you mean 'Does the poor Euro still make this worth it?'

In my opinion it does, wine is so much cheaper in France, regardless of the exchange rate.

Buy one from this end and one from the French end:-)
Then you can travel on both outward journeys ;-) Doubt the french would come to Dover for the day though!

Not strictly true - imagine if you only got a tenth of a euro for a quid - it wouldn't be worth it then would it?

If you plan a day trip to calais and want to make the most of it I'd suggest you drive to Brugge first (really pleasant place, just check out the film 'In Bruges') - treat yourself to great belgium beer or two and stroll around the town (Venice of the North I think its called) .Then head back to Calais (bit of a dump) and make for Citi de Europe where you can pick up some decent booze at Carrefour. Don't go on sunday though as unlike us, the French still respect their Sundays and the shops including supermarkets will be closed!

I do this trip every couple of months and it is worth it if you are stocking up on a fair bit of wine. I would say stay away from carrefour for your wine as it's no so cheap but it is good just to see the range of fresh food you can get.

I tend to go to Sainsbury's or Majestic as they tend to have a lot of deals on wine that makes it less than half the price you would pay here. For an example on my last visit at Majestic i got a Rioja that is near £12 a bottle here but it was on offer in Majestic for £4.95 a bottle.

And at Majestic if you pay in sterling they give you a fixed rate of £1.14 to the euro so very worth it in my opinion.

I think thats why they have this! We did this for £9 Feb '08 ago in 1/2 term (with £1.90 Quidco c/b!). Sold the wine for a few quid on flea (as I don't drink) and saw all the sights of historic Calais in a day!

BTW, the meal is about £8 (worth £2) and not that good. Still cheap (and free) wine if that is your thing.

Seems a better deal, up to 9 people, a free case of wine and bogoff on the meals for £19 return

I do find Majestic's pricing confusing.
They quote in prices in £'s, which is OK if you want to pay in cash or cheque. However if you pay by credit/debit card, you get charged in €'s.
The store exchange rate refers to the rate that they used to calculate the price in €'s. In effect the £ rate stays the same and € price changes depending on the rate that they set.
If their rate is higher than than the current rate, then pay in €'s, if its lower then pay in £'s.

Last time I was over, filling my trolley, a British couple started up a conversation for 5 ot 10 mins. Afterwards it stuck me that I had pretty much told them exactly what I was doing, and it occured to me that they might have been customs and excise employees, just sussing out what people were doing (not that I was doing anything wrong). Maybe I'm just a bit paranoid.

Loss of confidence in the pound! sarcy! You obviously don't understand financial markets:-)

It happens - the Deutschmark was once 80 to the quid - just before the euro appeared it was only 2 and a bit to the quid - it happens!

Anyone tried this recently? I've been trying all afternoon and the webpage when load when I select the book link.

Strange - not sure why but it started working again and I was able to book. A friend tried a few minutes later and it wouldn't work again, so they phoned P&O and they gave them the same offer on the phone.

Ar*e & Elbow I'm afraid. A case of wine is 9 litres. I wouldn't have called Chateau Lafitte 'cheap crap' but I think you'll find they still pack that in 12's! As do a lot of other 'quality' producers. This is a terrific deal, unfortunately I had already booked the Daily Mail offer for £22.

Just come back from my daytrip to France. Was very busy at Dover checking in - the staff member we spoke to mentioned P&O hadn't realised it was halfterm week, and hadn't taken on enough staff, so it was little busy for them!

We had our free breakfast on the ferry, and grabbed the free 6 bottles of wine, which are valued at £18, so excellent deal.
