Harrowing thriller about a hotwired ex-soldier (co-scripter Paddy Considine from Cinderella Man) who returns to his sleepy Midlands hometown to dole out merciless revenge upon the booze and drug-sodden hoodlums who abused his mentally handicapped younger brother (the astonishing Toby Kebbel). Director Shane Meadows (Once Upon a Time in the Midlands) doesn't shy away from delivering scenes of gripping suspense and violence, but the end result hews closer to an ambiguous meditation on the nature and effect of vengeance a la Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs than a Death Wish-style grindhouse effort. Taut and thought-provoking, Dead Man's Shoes is a must-see for indie film aficionados with a taste for the grittiest of fare. The DVD includes some rollicking commentary by Meadows, Considine, and producer Mark Herbert; an intriguing and heartfelt featurette on Meadows and his own violent past as a teenage skinhead in 1980s England, from which he drew inspiration for this film; and an alternate (and somewhat less satisfying) final scene.

This is a fantastic film, but the superb Paddy Considine is even better in another Meadows number, A Room For Romeo Brass, and it was his first role - a more shocking and arresting debut I've not seen ever... Both are must watch films that, like most Shane Meadows films, resonate more after than during. Hot at £50.

Great film. Excellent. Ulitimate revenge.

"Do you want to give him a kiss?"

Reminds me of home.

Hot.

Spooky. Just found and posted A Room For Romeo Brass £3.99 hotukdeals.com/ite…e-/

Good family film and a perfect Sunday afternoons entertainment.

excellent film

To good to miss at that price:thumbsup:

Stunning movie - hard hitting and brilliantly directed and acted. got to get.

Good movie, seen it on channel four a few times.

It's not as great as everybody seems to be suggesting (IMNSHO) - a very watcheable movie indeed - as suggested it does very much have a "made-for-TV" feel to it.

I watched this movie based on the feedback that it was "something else"

It could have been a lot better - especially if the scenes of violence were more drawn out and graphic.

I felt a bit "short changed" by the film overall.

I'm only familiar with his other movie, "This is England", which also falls very far short of the critical acclaim given to it.

I thought they recreated the feel and look of the time period quite well but the way the skinheads actually interacted with each other was very 21st Century.
Since when did skinheads (in the late 70's early 80's) hug each other and "chill" etc.? (And we are not talking about gay blokes into the "skinhead look" either) :whistling:

Combo was the only realistic skinhead character in the movie for me.

Try "Taken" for a good recent revenge movie - complete escapism but lots of revenge inspired violence :w00t:

Perhaps you were watching the wrong film then as the other famous Shane Meadows film is "This is England"... Which I also thought was great... I prefered Dead Mans Shoes though! Great film, heat + rep.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion but to put a movie down because it has a "a "made-for-TV" feel" is a little unfair. movie's should be judged on content, not film quality.

This seems to be an ever present injustice on brilliantly made movies due to the over edited, bullsh*t ridden mush that hollywood churns out, making viewers think that big budget movies with multi million dollar sets and cast is they only way to make a decent movie.

I personally feel that about 90% of these big time, "blockbuster", style movies DO look good but the story line falls way short of what a lot of the independent, small time movies are achieving.

Your comment about the violence is fair - I'm all up for a bit of ultra violence but i don't think it would have fitted in this movie, its all about suspense. Besides, no part of that movie will shock as much as the shot of Anthony in the stable.

With regards to This Is England, again your entitled to an opinion and it's nice to read what others think. It's great to watch a film that shows Skinheads aren't all national front supporters!

I'd disagree with your comment about time period though - obviously I wasn't around then but I know a lot of skinheads and have been around a lot of skinheads who were around in the eighties - from what I've seen is that everyone, including the originals and old blokes, just want to have a drink and enjoy being around their mates, they are, after all, just normal folk.

I'd agree about Combo but that's because Stephen Graham is a great actor, playing a great part.

I think anyone who says Taken is a better film than Dead Mans Shoes is a couple of sandwichs short of a full picnic.

I think Dead Man's Shoes is one of the best films I've seen in a long, long time. It stays with you. Relocating what is essentially a revenge western into the Peak District of all places and portraying the gang behind the monstrous act as mundane, pathetic individuals injects more realism than a hundred Hollywood blockbusters with star names could ever manage. The violence is more shocking by being brief and matter of fact.

Coupled with a brilliant Americana soundtrack as well.

I didn't put it down due to the made-for-tv comment - it simply has that feel and look to it - it's a Channel 4 production after all anyway.

I completely agree on the big budget movies as well - they can suck equally as well as low budget movies. I'm very much into independant films as they do often provide a much better standard of movie at the end of the day.

The comment on the skinheads was about the language used and their interaction with each other - they use the phrase "chill" in the movie - it wasn't in use back then.
Blokes hugging each other for reassurance was also not the norm - you'd have been thought of as "soft" (as a minimum) at that point in time - it's not accurate at all (I was 17 in '82 - chasing mods & skinz on their scooters for kicks with my gang of fellow biker punks!) - and I do like to see accurate details in "period" movies.

I wanted to see the ba$tards truly suffer for what they did - that's why I felt short changed - I wanted to see prolonged fear on their faces as the justice was meted out with a blunt instrument or two :w00t:

The scene in Taken with the 6 inch nails and the mains supply just gives me the horn if the truth be told - not to be done to me of course but to some deserving bar steward :whistling:

In one of the Rob Zombie movies there is a scene with a person tied to a chair and a ball peen hammer involved - fantastic stuff :w00t:

That's what was missing (for me) - otherwise it would have been much more highly rated

Obviously I wouldn't know about language from back then so I'll tkae your word for it. With regards to the macho attitudes, again, I can't argue but having regularly found myself in environments surrounded by 5, 6, 7 hundred plus skinheads at a time I don't feel that yoru comments are entirely true. Fair enough being around at the time but interaction within a group can differ from that of interaction with other groups.

You wouldn't feel like this watching the movie as you don't actually find otu what they did until after the killing's finished?

Anyway, minds are made up, shame you didn't enjoy it.
