One question, can you easily overlock the Dell machine like this?

Ignore the savings - they are fictitious!

Far too expensive for those specs.
Atleast £250 overpriced imo.

You could build yourself a Sandy Bridge beast with £800.

Build your own if possible or get someone to do it for you. For £800 you will get a far better base unit.

but for those who dont want a build one or get someone to build one or upgrade themselves ie 95% of the computer users who just want to buy a computer off the shelf!:p

but there will be alot better available for a similar price

The cpu in this is about to be replaced so don't buy it. Spend your money on a Dell Sandybridge or wait a few weeks for the new AMD Bulldozer

And you can't overclock the CPU's in Dell's...not even in software (cos you won't know the motherboard id)

Shockingly poor value IMO, why'd you post it, op?

Hmm, wonder if this will reach minus 100 degrees oO

has any one of you knockers actually linked to any better deals for either same money or less? None of you think of the "normal" user who just wants to buy something by clicking a few buttons, rather than building up a super specked system themselves and and having something of a monstrosity hybrid sat on your desk. If thats what you want ...fine go ahead, but don't drag the majority into your closed world

There is no wonder why people dont want to post things on here in fear of being ridiculed.

Nope. Dell's XPS range have the bios locked and the hardware is pretty inflexible. The only Dell machine's with any real upgradeability are the alienware range which are hideously overpriced to start with.

With a bit of saavy you could build an equivelent machine to this from Scan / Ebuyer / **** for just over £400. Cold i'm afraid.

realblender

Surely much cheaper to get any of these … Surely much cheaper to get any of these http://www.dell.com/uk/p/studio-xps-7100/fshttp://www.dell.com/uk/p/xps-8300/fsand do the graphics, memory and hard disc upgrades yourself from ebuyer

Another thing worth mentioning. Dell put nasty little powersupplies in their XPS machines. Most have 350w some have 420w. So if your looking to upgrade later down the line budget another £75 for a decent PSU. Better off to just build a machine from scracth IMO.

(I have even seen recent XPS machines with BTX format motherboards inside - upgrade that if you dare!!!)

Sorry, tyke-eng, it was honestly not my intention to ridicule you, I was genuinely perplexed why you would think the Dell deal was good.

You asked for other better deals, here's a couple:

meshcomputers.com/Def…ox3

ebuyer.com/pro…503

The Mesh is the same price, but better in almost every respect, with a processor that is considerably faster to start with, that you can get factory overclocked to 4.8Ghz, which would simply wipe the floor with a Phenom II X6 1090T.

The Zoostorm has a comparable spec. for over £100 less.

Thanks guys
Now I must confess, I dont understand :-)
is the i5 quadcore faster overall than the AMD 6 core? see benchmark
cpubenchmark.net/cpu…GHz
Are the the 1GB graphics cards better than the Dell one?
neither of these machines seem to have Bluray
neither seem to have the hard drive size.
I am not trying to raise an argument, I am genuinely confused as to the layman (ME) the dell specification seems higher. Which I guess might be a marketing ploy

Edited by: "tyke-eng" 27th May 2011

I'd want to know how quiet this machine is too before parting 700!!

i think you need to look at some real world benchmarks and read up about computers. there is no marketing poly you are just clueless.

by the time you spec the mesh system up ie add the bluray and Raid0 and 2TB of drives, it ends up at £950

Anyway I am bored now,

You generally wouldn’t need to spend that much money to get a decent PSU fit for this system.

There’s a 10% voucher that works - PCKV133TM$9QB2
Plus Quidco is currently 10% for XPS systems (exc VAT and delivery) so that brings the price down to ~£663 which is a lot more reasonable.

In reference to the people saying use this an an upgrade base...the PSU in dell are rock solid, but still at 460w its too small for any half decent gaming machine / GPU. Personally having built a few machines i would opt for a 650W Corsair or even a 750W, these tend to float around the £75 mark.

Dell were using the (dead) BTX format as recently as the XPS 420/430...well after the rest of the world had turned it back on it. A shame considering it was a form factor with alot of potiential...and not suprising given the size of Dell the parts bins have tens of thousands of units in them.

i'm not a dell hater at all, i just dont want anyone to be under the impression that this machine will be upgrade friendly in the future.

you compared 2 cards just by looking at the gpu memory!! oO
i am assuming that you thought the phenom was a better cpu than the 2400 purely because of the number of cores and clock rate?? i didnt have to back it up - you shot yourself in the foot through previous comments.
i bet you don't even know what raid 0 is nor the benefits or drawback of such a setup. why would you put two 7200rpm 1tb drives in raid 0 anyway?? go for a ssd and a 2tb 5400 spin hdd.....

not sure if this deal is good or not (guessing not from overall comments) but the OP is right in many respects.
build/upgrade yourself is irrelevant to most.
linked systems dont have blurays have different size HDD gpu manufacturers etc.
If you are going to compare then at least make sure you are doing like for like on everything then improving.
systems with faster cpu/gpu may suit you but if they dont have the hdd, bluray etc included in this then you are just back to the irrelevant build your own systems.

Wow somebody taking some sense at long last.
I know its my post, but nobody has shown me anything better. Ok the processors may be "similar" to the i5, but if you wanted this spec of PC form a reputable source like Dell, is there really much better for the money. The AMD processsor I am running at work, out guns the "so called equivalent" intel, and worked out cheaper. Of course the Mesh system suggested is a good make, and would be an ideal candidate to price matching, but made up to same spec it was more money.
People put so called deals on this forum, sometimes to offer suggestions to people others just use the forum to knock folk down but vary rarely actually post anything themselves. Some people just need to realize that there are other opinions other than their own, some are right and some are wrong. There also seems to be a price limit as to what is acceptable on these forums even if the deal is good, its gets knocked because its expensive. So maybe I will post deals on baked beans and poundland rubbish in the vain hope it will get a high rating in future
