Dell Inspiron 11Z Vista notebook, perfect for students and home users

The ultra low voltage (ULV) Dell Inspiron 11 is a brand new type of laptop, powered by energy efficient Intel Celeron processor. So slim and light you can carry it anywhere, the Inspiron 11 weighs just 1.3kg and runs for up to 6 hours without being recharged. Dell''s very first ULV laptop is much more powerful than a netbook, yet lighter and more affordable than a standard laptop. The Inspiron 11z is packed with impressive features, including a whopping 250GB hard disk drive for storing around 200 HD movies or 64,000 songs.

The Inspiron 11Z crisp, 11.6" HD screen displays images in stunning, razor-sharp detail and makes watching movies a real treat. When you want to share movies or video stored on your laptop with friends you can hook it up to your TV using the HDMI port. Speedy Wi-Fi internet, three USB ports, Ethernet and a memory card reader all come in handy, and the integrated webcam makes messaging more fun. The Inspiron 11 comes with Vista Home Edition, which helps you make the most of your laptop by keeping it protected and running smoothly.

shame about the CPU

Good price given that it was £399 in Nov. However please note that PC Adviser says that it lies between a netbook and notebook and that Vista runs rather slow on this:

Shame about the OS. An upgrade to 7 would be hugely beneficial

Personally I would use Ubuntu 10.04, just hate vista and you are right it'll be a pain to work on this laptop with Vista

...which would be perfectly acceptable if Ubuntu would 'just work'

I've tried 10.04 over the last few days and while it is a vast improvement, unfortunately it's still a no go for me. Crappy wireless connection problems and the constant font issues with Firefox don't help.

Apologies, I've wasted a week of my life trying to sort out all the myriad of issues, and the frustration's kinda of seeping out!

Bit surprising, I've installed 64 bit and I've a really old wireless dongle which works absolutely fine. And this dongle doesn't have drivers are available on 64 bit windows (on any versions). I've got it on two systems one deskop and one laptop both work well. takes only 2 sec to wake up from sleep. I do agree that it is not out of the box and you may need to google sometime.

Try gnome-do it is pretty impressive.
